We are working enthusiastically on our upcoming Boyd Family Reunion to be held once again the weekend of September 28 and 29 this fall. This is a lovely time of year to visit Boydton and the Boyd Tavern. We are also uniquely blessed with having in the Boyd Tavern such a lovely historical place to gather. This year's reunion will once again start on Satm•day afternoon. VI e will be offering a walking tour that starts at 2 pm at the Tavern. This year's tour will be led by our cousin, Walter Beales and will focus on the History of Randolph-Macon College. Afrer gathering our group at the Tavern, we will take cars to the Randolph-Macon College site where we will disembark and look at various buildings. If you are not interested in the walking tour, please relax with lemonade and cookies at the Tavern. You can also peruse our genealogical files. Don't forget to bring your family photos to be scanned for our files. Saturday evening will kick off at 6:00 pm with cocktails followed by a pig roast at the Tavern. This evening is casual and fun. We will also have games and activities for the children. After dinner local author and historian, John Caknipe, Jr. will speak to us on The Boyds at Randolph-Macon College. If you haven't seen the restored County Courthouse illuminated at night this would be a great time for us all to take a short walk. This is a beautiful sight, not to be missed. Sunday morning we will have coffee and donuts at the Tavern before our 11:00 am church service atthe Boydton Presbyterian Church. The Rev. RECENT GIFTS DONATED TO THE BOYD FAMILY FOUNDATION

Well and tree, Ironstone Platter Given to the Boyd Family Memorial Foundation several years ago is the beautiful, well and tree, Ironstone Platter in memory of Jane Virginia Philbrick and Martha Andrews Wing who were Boyd descendants. They loved their Boyd Heritage and worked very hard at the Boyd Tavern during its restoration. The platter was

given to the Boyd Tavern Memorial Foundation by Martha's daughter, Sandra Wing Walker in memory of her mother, Martha Wing and Aunt Jane Philbrick. Originally the platter had been on exhibit in the NSDAR Memorial Continental Hall, Washington, D.C. in memory of the late Alexander Boyd Andrews of Raleigh, NC whose building of the railroad opened up Western North Carolina. His work is commemorated by the Fountain at Round Knob, endowed by the late George F. Baker ofNew York. This platter is elongated octagonal form. No decoration. The dimensions are top 20 W' x 15 %". The bottom has T.J. and J. Mayers, 19th Century. Great condition.

At the 2012 Boyd Family Reunion, Linden Tucker Bell presented a silver ladle to the Boyd Family Memorial Foundation. The ladle inscribed "Boyd, 1790" was originally owned by Alexander Boyd, the Elder, and descended to Linden through Alexander's son Robert. The ladle was made by silversmith and watchmaker, Ebenezer Thomas in Petersburg, Virginia.

Boyd Genealogy

This family is of very considerable antiquity. The first recorded ancestor, Simon, brother of Walter, High Steward of Scotland witnessed the foundations charter of the monastery of Paisley in 1160. He was the father of the first Robert, called Boyt or Boyd, from his complexion, Celtic word Boit signifying fair, and from him derived the various families of the name. The entire family records are not complete but this is a list of the ancestors of Alexander Boyd, the Elder as much can be found at this time. Sir Robert Boyd - 1205 Sir Robert Boyd, son, 1263 Sir Robert Boyd, son 1296

Sir Robert Boyd, Knight, d. 1333 given the lands of Kilmarnock.

Sir Thomas Boyd, Lord of Kilmarnock Brothers: Alan and James

Sir Thomas Boyd, son, m. Alice Gifford Sir Thomas Boyd, son, m. Jane Montgomery Sir Thomas Boyd, son, killed in 1439 Sir Robert Boyd, the Great, Lord at Kilmarnock

D. 1474 Hon. Alexander Boyd (2nd son) d. 1515. He was Chamberlain of Kilmarnock and brother of Sir Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran, who married Princess Mary, daughter of King James, IL

Records are incomplete from this period to the birth of Alexander, the Elder, son of Robert and Elizal;>eth Anderson Boyd, born in Scotland in 1743, who came to America and settled in Mecklenburg County, VA. He had three brothers, two of which came to America and one who went to New Zealand.

Alexander married Ann Dandridge Swepson daughter of Richard Swepson and Jean Dandridge. Ann Dandridge Swepson's mother, Jean Dandridge is reputedly to be known as sister to Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. Col. John Dandridge ofNew Kent County married Frances Jones. Their oldest child was Martha Dandridge who married Col. Daniel Parke Custis first and then Gen. George Washington.

There is no proof that Col. William Dandridge and/or his sister Jean Dandridge relocated to Mecklenburg County but since Jean Dandridge married Richard Swepson, it is believed to be the connection of the Boyd family to the Dandridge and Washington families. Jean Dandridge Swepson was mother to Ann Swepson who married Alexander, the Elder. William Dandridge, son of Bartholomew of England lived on York River in 1763, what became ofhim is not known. Gloucester has a long York River frontage but the County records were burned. Richard Swepson, married Jean Dandridge about 1745-46. It seems probable that she was a sister of William who had come from England with him. She seems to have been the same age as the children of William and John Dandridge; we are sure she was of this family

Ann Dandridge Swepson Boyd and Alexander Boyd, the Elder, and had eleven children. They were William, Robert, Richard, Alexander, James, David, John, Jane, Ann, Mary Frances, and Susannah. Two of their sons, A~exander, the Younger, and Richard married Burwell sisters.

Richard b. 1771 married Panthea Burwell. They had 11 children:

A Recent Connection

Martha Townes Boyd Ross (Marty) and her husband, Millard Irvin Ross came through Boydton just three weeks after the 2012 Boyd Family Reunion. Marty and Millard are from Conyers, GA, and they have two children, Robert Boyd Ross (Rob) and Chapman Millard Ross (Chap). Chap has two children, lshaan Taylor Ross and Mire Isabella Ross. Marty is a descendant of Alexander Boyd through his son, William. Boyd. Captain William Townes moved to Covington, TN in the late 1800's. Marty's granddaughter's middle name Isabella, was Capt. William Townes' great grandmother's name.

Interestingly, Millard is a descendant of the Rev. Howell Taylor family, also of Mecklenburg County. The Taylor family moved from Mecklenburg County to Brownsville, TN in the early 1800's. They established the first church there in 1826, calling it New Hope. In 1832 a second church was built on the site and was named Tabernacle after the original church in which Howell Taylor had worshipped in Mecklenburg County. Marty's grandson's middle name, Taylor reflects this additional Mecklenburg Connection. In May of 2013, Marty and Millard visited Dean Castle in Kilmarnock, Scotland, home of the Boyd family from 1205 to 17 48. The Rosses hope to attend the Boyd Family Reunion this September. Robert Boyd Ross will be marrying on September 21st in Chicago, so September will be a very busy month for the Rosses.
