In news:
The Supreme Court asked the UP government to respond to a
petition alleging that the government is discriminating against
Hindus by providing religious minorities with welfare schemes
worth thousands of crores.
National Commission for Minorities
Statutory body set up under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
Unlike other bodies like NCSC and NCST, NCM has no constitutional backing or status.
Works under the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
It looks into complaints from members of five religious communities notified as a minority
community in 2014.( Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Parsis) Jain
community)
Who are minorities? Constitution speaks of minorities ‘based on religion or language’ and rights of minorities have
been spelt out in Constitution in detail.

Six religious communities, viz. Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians (Parsis) and
Jains have been notified in Gazette of India as minority communities by Union Government all
over India.

Challa Sreenivasulu Setty as the MD of the SBI
The government appointed Challa Sreenivasulu
Setty as the Managing Director (MD) of the State
Bank of India (SBI) on 20 January 2020. He is
appointed for a period of three years. The proposal of
the Department of the Financial Services for the
appointment of Setty was approved by the
Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). His
appointment will be with effect from the date of his
taking over the charge of the post or until further orders.
Challa Sreenivasulu Setty:
Challa Sreenivasulu Setty is currently serving as the deputy managing director (DMD)
of the SBI. He was responsible for resolving the stressed assets portfolio across India
in different sectors such as Power, Oil, Infra, Auto, and Telecom. In 1988, he joined as
Probationary Officer in SBI's Ahmedabad Circle

Priya Prakash won the Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership
Award for 2019. She is the founder and CEO of India-based
HealthSetGo. The award recognizes her school health
program that aimed to provided 360-degree healthcare
support to children.
Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award: The award honours individuals aged between 18 to 30 who are bringing about a
positive change in the world by solving some of its biggest global challenges. The award
includes a cash prize of $250,000 to the individual's organization to which the individual
contributes. The cash prize aims to further promote the mission of the organization to
accelerate global problem-solving.
India ranked 51st in the Democracy Index 2019.
It has dropped 10 places in the Democracy Index’s global
ranking. The survey described the erosion of civil liberties
in India as the primary cause of democratic regression.
Report Highlights:
♦ The index is based on the functioning of government, electoral process and pluralism,
civil liberties, political participation, and political culture.
♦ The report A year of democratic setbacks and popular protest was prepared by
The Economist Intelligence Unit.
♦ It provided a snapshot of the state of democracy worldwide in 165 independent states
and two territories.

Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti is celebrated on 23 January
The day marks the 124th birth anniversary of Bose.
Subhash Chandra Bose's birth anniversary
commemorates his contribution to India's struggle for
independence.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose:
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack,
Odisha on 23 January 1897. He ranked second in the
matriculation examination and fourth in the Indian Civil Services (ICS)
examination. He quit his ICS job and came back to India from England in 1921. He
joined India's freedom struggle movement. He was a member of the Indian National
Congress (INC). He introduced the famous slogan 'Jai Hind'. He revamped the Indian
National Army (INA).
India joins Reskilling Revolution scheme at the WEF annual meet India joined the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Reskilling Revolution on 22 January
which is being held in Davos, Switzerland. The 50th WEF Annual Meeting is being
held from 21-24 January 2020.
Aim:
The Reskilling Revolution scheme aims to train workers from technological change and
help economies by providing new skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
WEF's Reskilling Revolution:
♦ The scheme will act as a public-private platform to generate new employment
opportunities.
♦ The initiative plans to provide one billion people with better education, skills, and
jobs by 2030.
♦ WEF released a report titled Jobs of Tomorrow: Mapping Opportunity in the New
Economy.
♦ LinkedIn will act as a data partner for the Reskilling Revolution scheme.
