To buy, or not to buy...

Everything we buy has an impact on the

environment, Buy Nothing Day highlights the environmental and ethical

consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world

population are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a

disproportionate level of environmental damage, and an unfair distribution of wealth.

As consumers we need to question the products we buy and challenge the companies

who produce them. What are the true risks to the environment and developing

countries? The argument is infinite - while it continues we should be looking for

simple solutions and Buy Nothing Day is a good place to start.

No purchase necessary!

Saturday November 27th 2010 will be the next Buy Nothing Day (UK). It's a day

where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping

and tune into life. The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from shopping

and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

People around the UK will make a pact with themselves to take a break from

consumption as a personal experiment or public statement and the best thing is - IT'S

People In the world buy without counting.

People consume because, at school, they learn

that they need to earn money.

They buy lots of stuff while they don’t need it. They

buy many cars and bigger cars; consequently they

don’t walk, so it provokes obesity and pollution.

What provokes obesity too, is the fact that people

eat a lot, consume too much fast food.

Consequently, there is too much wasting, obese

persons and pollution, in all the developed

countries in the world.

BETTER CONSUMPTION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.

We swim in an ocean of advertising, all are telling us the same thing: consume, more

and more. From our youngest age, we learn that we have to earn lots of money then spend

it foolishly. People save their money to consume always more.

Consumption is a vicious circle. That's why everybody should take part in Buy

Nothing Day.

We live in a world where food, money & shops are everywhere around us. You want

something to eat ? Just go out of your house and you've got a place where you can find

food. The food industry spends billions of dollars a year to convince us that we're famished.

And, the worst is that it works!

We always want more, this is one of the reasons why the auto industry spends billions of

dollars, just to tell us that we need new cars, more cars, bigger cars. The number of

vehicles in the world is HUGE. Just to give you an idea, there are more cars than drivers...

So ridiculous!

“Still not happy ? You haven't consumed enough!”

Imagine just a day without buying anything. You would save money for something much

more useful than a little gadget that you bought on a whim. Finally, all this consumption

doesn't make us happier. That's the reason why you should participate to this special day.

Alexandra, Ornella et Nicolas.

THE BLUE PLANET DOESN’T WANT TO BECOME GREY!

This poster represents the excessive consumption of the world, and this slogan means

that we must not pollute the earth if we want to continue to live in a good

environment. This picture is a caricature of the consumer society. This poster

denounces all the problems caused by over-consumption: pollution, deforestation,

traffic, or obesity. The environmental consequences are serious and if we don’t stop

over-consuming Man could destroy the planet. A world that could die because of the

way we live. I think we should begin to do simple things like: sorting the waste,

adopting an ecological behavior, taking the bus instead of the car, saving energy...

Ecology Economy Better Living

Overconsumption is a very bad thing.

Do not spend too much money because while some eat their fill and

waste food, other persons are dying of hunger. Rich countries

consume so much that poor countries have nothing for them.

Everyone should eat the same quantities.

We must stop consuming so much food because after people are too

fat and take the habit of eating more than normal.

When we buy a lot, we're wasting money, too much money. We are

wasting not only food but also money.

Overconsumption in the world : « Buy nothing day »

There is a lot of over-consumption in the world.

Many persons consume too much, for example the teenagers who want to be fashionable and

buy all the designer clothes which are very expensive, the rich persons who don’t know how to

save and buy things that they don’t need for example they buy many cars but they don’t use

them. Everything we buy has an impact on the environment, Buy Nothing Day highlights the

environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism.

To avoid over-consuming we have organized a day when nobody spends money; this day is

called "buy nothing day". It's a day when you challenge yourself, your family and friends to

switch off from shopping and tune into life. The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox

from shopping and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

BE A CONSUMER

KILL THE WOLRD!

Nature is less present on our planet,

wherever we go we discover more and more waste,

what can we do ?

People consume more than they need;

the population's consumption is unequal between the different countries, like America

& Asia . In America, 43% of the waste isn't destroyed .

The different people haven't got the same lifestyle, some people are more

environmentally friendly, others think about producing more and more, and others

consume as much as they can possibly. Plus, the single-use products are more present

in our consumer society.

We know that people consume too much and this causes waste and the destruction

of our planet. The consequences are:

-Pollution

-Deforestation

Entire forests are destroyed to produce more and more!.

Reducing your consumption can save people.

And do you want to live like these children? They don't have a choice ... You do!

Come on to Buy nothing day ! Sylvaine & Nicolas

Asia & Africa have become the dustbin of many countries

The end is YOU

Our planet is dying. People don’t care

but it’s real. Pollution, waste, obesity..

It’s the result of your consumerism.

If you don’t stop, you’ll

provoke the end!

! Do you want to live here?

Do you want to look like them?

Do you want your children to look like them?

No? So stop your consumerism!

To consume too much is bad !

Advertising is everywhere : in the street, at home, on television, on the radio,

in the magazines and the newspaper that we read and in our mail boxes. These

adverts tell us to consume.

Advertising makes things lovely and attractive to get the consumer to buy

rapidly. Sometimes it makes us feel that it is necessary to buy things because they are

fashionable, new, efficient, or sometimes just to imitate the others.

Unfortunately most of the consumers are not aware that advertising is highly

paid by the industries to put pressure on consumers. We are fed up with the power of

advertising because the consumers are hooked by this consumer society. Then they

go bankrupt.

What if we changed places ?

While some people die of famine and need money... Other people

waste food, water and create pollution and rubbish which destroy

our planet.

We are spendthrift consumers. We consume too much and produce a

lot of rubbish, and waste money.

You need to consume less, save more.

And think of the impoverished countries!

Consumption is connected with money. Stores encourage consumption, so it belongs to people to think before

buying, but there are many temptations, it requires to be educated in consumption. The distributors and the

consumers are taken in the same spiral. Problem of the rich countries. They urge people to consume!

Choose according to your means, your needs, and avoid the debts.

To be a citizen it is to be responsible...

The danger of the consumer society is to spend more than you should, which leads to debts for more and more

people. The trap for the persons who have no means is excessive debt. The culprits: the media and the

abundance of advertising.

We buy more that what we need. Then the problem of the accumulation arises. Overconsumption entails

problems of pollution, child obesity and problems of overproduction.

If we buy online, easy terms of payment are granted : it is an incentive to consume more and more. The

consequences are: a decrease in stocks for example oil, pollution, overproduction, overconsumption , the end of

the humanity!

" We consume too much, we eat too much, we waste … "
