Engineering, IIT Delhi

Message from Head of the DepartmentWe have just concluded the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute with a sense

of achievement and accomplishment. Since the Civil Engineering Department has all along contributed not only in providing the academic excellence but also in building the basic

infrastructure of this great Institute; therefore, there would not be a better time to engage in introspection and put together our achievements as well as our resolve to engage with

the challenges of future in view of rapidly changing needs and environment of our society. This brief information brochure is an attempt in this direction.

The Department has always been able to attract and nurture faculty that is equivalent to the best as per international standards. They have always been engaging with the

cutting edge research in their respective areas and contributed not only at the national but also international level. They have always been deeply involved in moulding our

young bright undergraduate and graduate students into technologists, technocrats and researchers who are capable of providing best of solutions to the societal problems.

I can vouch on behalf of my faculty colleagues and staff that we will continue to strive for greater heights in teaching and research that is relevant and shall help in nation

building. I am very happy to present a brief account of our engagements, achievements and aspirations in the following pages.

The Civil Engineering Department is one of the oldest departments of the Institute and was established along with the inception of the Institute in 1961.

Starting with a regular five year bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, the Department has grown leaps and bounds in offering seven different specialised Institute M.Tech. Programmes along with a host of industry sponsored M.Tech./PG Diploma Programmes. The Department also offers M.S. (Research) and Ph.D. Programmes in different frontier areas of research in Civil Engineering.

The Department which housed in a tiny shed in 1961, moved through the corridors of Block I, before finally settling in its present location at Block IV and V occupying nearly 4500 m2 of covered area on the campus.

The Department also excels in industry sponsored research and consultancy activities. This journey, however, has not been overnight; it’s been a result of hard work put in by the faculty, the laboratory staff, the students and has thoroughly been backed by the administration at all levels through the times.

In the formative stages: Prof. R. N. Dogra, the founding director, IIT Delhi detailing the model of the Institute’s building

Academic and Research ProgrammesAcademic and Research ProgrammesBachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering The Department offers B.Tech. degree to eligible candidates, which is a four year undergraduate programme. The students have a wide variety of core and elective courses to choose from. After completing the broad based core courses, each student chooses an elective course in his/her area of special interest from amongst the streams of Construction Engineering and Mangement, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Water Resources Engineering. The students undergo field trips, industry oriented practical training and colloquium and final year project as a part of the undergraduate programme. Each year more than 110 students join this prestigious programme.

Master of Technology in Civil EngineeringThe Department offers seven postgraduate programmes to eligible candidates, which are of two year duration each leading to M.Tech. degree in a specialised field (as given in the table alongside). In each programme, students acquire knowledge in broad-based core courses followed by electives which provide in-depth and specialised knowledge in areas of special interest to them. Like

the undergraduate students, they also undergo field trips and industry oriented practical training. A major project is also to be undertaken as a part of the curriculum in the final two semesters which involves research or design and development. Around 244 students enroll for these M.Tech. programmes every year. The Department also offers M.Tech. in Construction Technology and Management sponsored by Larsen & Toubro and one year PG Diploma in Metro Rail Transport: Technology and Management sponsored by DMRC which is open to industry sponsored candidates only. The Department also offers few M.Tech. programmes to universities abroad through the two-way video conferencing mode since 2009.

Research Programmes (Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science)The Department offers Ph.D. degree to postgraduate students who have attained M.Tech./M.E. degree and also to a few exceptionally bright B.Tech. students. At any instance, we have more than 150 students who are full-time, faculty who pursue their Ph.D. under the QIP (Quality Improvement Programme), part-time students who are basically from industry or nearby engineering colleges. The Department also offers Master of Science (Research) in all the areas of Civil Engineering to bright undergraduate students.

About three-fourths of the Department area is occupied by the state-of-the-art laboratories, namely:

l Advanced Dynamics Laboratory l Computational Geotechnics Laboratoryl Concrete Structures Laboratoryl Construction Simulation Laboratoryl Construction Technology Laboratory l Departmental Computational Laboratory l Engineering Geology Laboratory

l Environmental Engineering Laboratory l Foundation Engineering Laboratory l Geoenvironmental Engineering Laboratoryl Geographical Information System (GIS) Laboratoryl Heavy Structures Laboratory l Materials Research Laboratoryl Multi-Hazard Protective Structures Laboratory l Rock Mechanics Laboratory

The faculty are always enthusiastic in publishing books/book chapters, journal papers and conference papers both at the national and international levels on a variety of topics. In recent years (2007-2012) 361 journal papers, 527 conference papers and 42 book/book chapters have been published. The faculty also actively take part in editing and reviewing books,

journal papers, conference papers/proceedings, journal issues, technical articles, masters and doctorate theses. Because of the proficiency of the Department in Civil Engineering, various

government divisions, Public Sector Undertakings and industries in the private sector approach the learned faculty for undertaking various research and

consultancy projects.

Complex design, construction and maintenance problems of the infrastructure sector are resolved through the intervention of the expert faculty of the Civil Engineering Department. The consultancy projects are undertaken for arriving at practical solutions to problems of special nature. The sponsoring agencies include, among others, Ministry of HRD, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Environment and Forests, DST, BRNS, CSIR, ONGC, EIL, CWC. To name a few organisations which took consultancy on various projects from the Department include DDA, DJB, NDMC, MCD, Northern Railways, NTPC, BSES, Power Grid Corporation, Unitech, Konkan Railways, Grasim, L&T, IRCON, RITES and others.
