Fast Freddie:

Host: Today, boys and girls, it's time for our memory verse. If you have a Bible, hold it up in the air!The devil gets nervous when kids bring their Bibles to church. Open your Bibles to Proverbs 19:5.

Fast Freddie: Hey, Teacher. The kids don't have to open their Bibles to that verse. I'll be glad to tell them whatit says.

Host: Freddie, do you know what our memory verse is?

Fast Freddie: Sure, Proverbs 19:5. It's one of my favorite verses!

Host: What does it say?

Fast Freddie: It says, "A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape."

Host: That's right! Boys and girls, let's give Fast Freddie a big hand! I didn't think he really knew thatverse!

Fast Freddie: You didn't think I was lying, did you? Lying creates more trouble than it gets us out of. It'simportant that we always tell the truth!

Host: Freddie, that's a good word! Would you lead us in learning today's memory verse?

Fast Freddie: Sure. Kids, you need to repeat after me. You say what I say. Okay? (Okay!) (Teacher repeatswhat Freddie says with the kids.) Proverbs (Proverbs) 19:5 (19:5). "A false witness (A falsewitness) shall not be unpunished (shall not be unpunished), and he that speaketh lies (and he thatspeaketh lies) shall not escape (shall not escape)." (Repeat verse several times in this manner.)That was good! (That was good!) You can stop now! (You can stop now!) Help me, Teacher!(Help me, Teacher!)

Okay, kids, that's enough. Freddie, you said to say what you said.

I know, but I didn't think they would repeat everything.

Boys and girls, Freddie is right. Lying really does create more trouble than it gets you out of.Proverbs 19:5 is an important verse.

Before I leave, can I sing a song?

I don't know. What do you think, kids? Should we let Freddie sing? (Allow time for response.)All right, Freddie. But you'd better sing a good Christian song.

It's a good one, Teacher. You'll see! Here we go! Jesus loves the little children. All the childrenof the world. Red and yellow, black and white, Baby, you are dynamite ...

Wait a minute. That's not how that song goes.

Oh, yeah. Let me try again. Jesus loves the little children. All the children of the world. Red andyellow, pink and green, you're the cutest chick I've seen...

Freddie, would you stop calling these girls cute little chicks.

They are cute little chicks!

Why do you say that?

Because their mothers are old hensl

Toby: I'm trying to think of a lie to tell my dad to get me out of the one I told Mr. Jenkins.

Billy: You've got to end this here and now, Toby.

(Billy disappears and emerges as Faith Man. Toby is "suspended" in the natural realm.)

Faith Man: This whole thing has your smell all over it, Negatron.

Negatron: Maybe ifs just the aftershave.

Faith Man: It's the lies. You've been coaching Toby along with all this.

Negatron: Everyone needs a little help from time to time.

Faith Man: Not your kind of help. It is written, "My mouth shall speak truth and wickedness is an abominationto my lips!"

Negatron: Yipes!

(Negatron exits and Faith Man turns back into Billy.)

Billy: You've got to stop the lies, Toby. It will only lead to more trouble.

Toby: You're right. Billy. I'm going over to Mr. Jenkins right now and confess everything. Thafs what Ishould have done in the first place.

What are you doing, Toby?

Oh, Billy, am I glad to see you. You've got to help me.

Whafs wrong?

You know Mr. Jenkins next door?

Yeah.

You know he's got those prize rosebushes planted on the side of his house?

Everybody knows that. He's won all kinds of awards with those rosebushes.

Is there a squashed rose award?

What did you do, Toby?

It was an accident. I didn't mean for it to happen.

What?

We had a bunch of bricks in the garage that my dad wanted to use to make a walkway in ourbackyard.

Yeah?

He told me to use the wheelbarrow and move them into the backyard because he's going to workon it this weekend.

Okay.

I loaded the wheelbarrow up really high because I didn't want to make a bunch of trips. When I gotaround to the side of the house, I hit a dip in the yard and lost control of the wheelbarrow.

Uh-oh.

Uh-oh is right. That load of bricks landed right on top of two of Mr. Jenkins' rosebushes.

What did you do?

I picked all the bricks up and put them in my backyard and I tried to straighten up those twobushes.

Did it work?

They're gonners, Billy-squashed beyond repair. What am I going to do?

I'd go tell Mr. Jenkins what happened. It was an accident, Toby. He'll understand.

I don't think so. He treats those roses better than most people treat their kids.

Maybe he would get upset, but irs still better to tell the truth right up front. Hey, I've got to run anerrand for my mom. I'll be back later to see how it all tums out. (exits)

Toby: See you later, Billy.

(Negatron enters.)

Negatron: If I was you, Kid, I wouldn't listen to a word he said. If Mr. Jenkins finds out what you did to hisroses, there goes your allowance for the next five years.

Mr. Jenkins would probably want me to pay for those roses. I don't even want to think about howmuch they're worth.

You better think about it. It's your money or your life, Kid.

Billy's right. I should just tell him what happened. What else can I do? I know Mr. Jenkins is goingto come and ask me about it.

Negatron:

Toby:

Negatron:

Toby:

Lie, you idiot! He doesn't know you did it. A dog could have gotten into his flowers.

I suppose I could make up some kind of a story about seeing a dog around his roses or somethinglike that.

You'll save your money and your hide.

After all, it was an accident. I didn't do it on purpose.

Of course, you didn't. Why should you have to pay for it?

I think I could pull this off. (A knock on the door is heard.) I bet that's Mr. Jenkins.

SCENE 2: TO~Y'S ~EDROOM(It's two hours later. Toby is worriedly pacing back and forth.)

Toby: I'm in bigger trouble now than evert I thought that dog story was working really good. ThenMr. Jenkins showed me the chips of brick he found in his rose bed. Now he's going to talk to mydad. What am I going to do?

(Negatron enters.)

Negatron: Calm down, Kid. We'll just think up another lie to tell your dad.

Toby: Now I'm going to have to lie to my dad to get out of all this. I didn't know I was going to have tokeep on lying.

It's okay. I do it all the time.

Negatron remains in the background.)

Hey, Toby. How did everything go with Mr. Jenkins?

Not good.

Did he really get mad at you?

Not yet.

What do you mean, not yet?

I didn't tell him the truth, Billy. I told him I saw a dog in his rose bed and I thought it would get meout of everything until he showed me the brick chips he found in his flowers. Now he's going to mydad with the evidence.

Billy: What are you going to do now?

O~JKTS NEEDED:A large, poster-board picture of a boy's face, three rubber snakes, and a hammer

~OW TO PREPARE:Place these objects in your pulpit.

MESSAGE:

I. A lying tongue is like a poisonous snake.

A. Poisonous snakes can kill with a single bite.

(Hold up one snake and relate a story you may have heard about snake bites.)

B. The snake uses his fangs like needles to inject poison into his victims.

C. The person who tells a lie puts a spiritual snake into his mouth.

(Hold up the picture of the boy's face and demonstrate this by dangling a rubber snake from hismouth.)

II. People tell lies because they think it helps them.

A. Some people tell lies to get out of trouble.

(Dangle a snake from the boy's mouth.)1. When you do wrong, you are already in trouble.2. Lying doesn't get you out of trouble. It only delays the punishment and makes it worse.

(Remove this snake.)

B. Some people tell lies to get what they want.

(Dangle a second snake from the boy's face.)1. These people tell lies to impress their friends.2. When another person leams that you have been untruthful, it destroys their faith in you.

A. When we are tempted to lie to get out of trouble, we should speak God's Word.1. Jeremiah 23:29 says that God's Word is like a hammer.2. We should remember Ephesians 4:25, "Let every man speak the truth with his neighbor."

(As you share this verse, smash the snake's head with the hammer.)B. When we are tempted to lie to get ahead, we should use the hammer of God.

1. Proverbs 19:5 says, "He that speaketh lies shall not escape."2. God honors truth and penalizes those who lie.

(Smash the second snake.)C. If we meet someone who lies for no reason, the hammer of God can set them free from a

lying spirit.

(Strike the last snake with the hammer.)

Closing:

Don't let the lying snakes anywhere near your mouth!

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: Rovercomer says hello, boys and girls! How about a little story, Rovercomer?

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He says he's got a good one. (to Rovercomer) Go ahead and tell it.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: Rovercomer says that there was a big dog show that came to town a few months ago.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He had wanted to enter because he felt like he had a great chance in the mixed-breed division. (toRovercomer) Now, Rovercomer, what do you have to do at a dog show?

Rovercomer: (barks, standing in a poised position)

Teacher: He says you have to know how to stand.

Rovercomer: (barks, walking around teacher in circles)

Teacher: He says you must know how to walk with poise.

Rovercomer: (barks, pointing at body)

Teacher: And you must be very clean and well-groomed. I see, Rovercomer.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He says one night, about three days before the show, it rained.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: After breakfast the next morning, he was outside playing with a ball.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He ran inside after playing, and when he looked down at the white carpet in his master's house, hewas horrified! (to Rovercomer) Why, Rovercomer?

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He says his paws had gotten dirty when he was playing outside and he had tracked mud all overthe carpet.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He thought, "If my master sees this, I'll be in big trouble!"

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: So he ran back outside and washed his paws off with the garden hose.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He came back in and was going to try to clean the mud up when his master walked in.

Teacher: His master said, "Oh, my, Rovercomer. Did you track this mud on my white carpet?"

Rovercomer: (barks, points at head)

Teacher: Rovercomer thought, "I washed my paws off, so if I say no, maybe my master will believe me!"

Rovercomer: (barks, shaking head, "No')

Teacher: So he said, "No, Sir. It wasn't me.'

Rovercomer: (barks, holding up paws)

Teacher: "See, I've got clean paws. It must have been Bingo."

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He said, "Yeah. Yeah. It wasn't me. It was Bingo.' (to Rovercomer) You told a lie!

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: He says he didn't want to get in trouble, so he lied. (to Rovercomer) But, Rovercomer, don't youknow lying never gets you out of trouble, it only makes your trouble worse?

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: Rovercomer says he knows that now!

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: His master looked at Rovercomer's paws and said, "Well, your paws are clean, but you could havewashed them. Lers see if they match the ones on the carpet!"

Rovercomer: (barks, holding paw, then putting it on the floor)

Teacher: So he marched Rovercomer over and put his paw down on the pawprint!

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: The print matched his paw, of course!

Rovercomer: (barks, pointing finger)

Teacher: His master said, "Rovercomer, Bingo didn't track this mud in. It was you!"

Rovercomer: (barks, shaking head "Yes," ashamedly)

Teacher: Rovercomer had to admit it. He had lied.

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: His master said, "I know you wanted to enter the mixed-breed class at the dog show in three days."

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: "I planned to !et you."

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: "But because you lied, there will be no dog show for you."

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: His master said, "If you had just tracked mud on the carpet, I wouldn't have liked it, but I wouldhave let you go to the show."

Rovercomer: (barks)

Teacher: "But lying is worse than tracking mud."

After four weeks of practice, the Rockets were startingto come together as a team. The starting positions hadbeen determined and Coach Sam Johnson was pleasedwith the team's overall attitude. Their first game wasonly a couple of days away and Sam could tell the boyswere a little nervous about it. He called them alltogether after practice.

"This is our last practice before ourfirst game, "Coach began. "It's normal to be a little nervousabout your first game and to have some butterjliesin your stomach. Just remember to concentrate onthe fundamentals and play ball. You guys are goingto do great. Be sure and get some good rest thenight before. I'll see you on Saturday. "

Coach Johnson's calm and confident attitude helpedall the boys. As everyone was leaving, one of the boys'moms approached Sam.

"Coach Johnson, I'm Pamela Williams, Brian andTerry's mother," the woman said.

"Pleased to meet you," said Sam.

"First ofall, I want to thank you for letting Terrywork on the team as the trainer. I know you didn'thave to do that, and it has meant so much to him.All I hear about these days is Coach said this, andCoach said that. You've made quite an impressionon him."

Sam chuckled a bit.

"When I saw him sitting on that bench so sadbecause he couldn't play, I had to do something. He had those 'baseball eyes' as I call them. Hewanted to be a part of the team so badly he couldtaste it. I'm just glad I didn't have a whole benchfull ofkids with that same look. I don't know whatI would have done then. Terry's a good boy.Mrs. Williams, and he's a great help."

"Thank you, " said Mrs. Williams.

Sam noticed that Mrs. Williams was hesitating andseemed to have a concerned look on her face.

"Is there something else I can help you with?" heasked.

Tears began to well up in Mrs. Williams' eyes.

"I don't know if you can help me or not," she said, trying to keep her composure. "It's just that theboys respect you so much, I thought they mightlisten to you. "

"What is it?" asked Sam.

"We have a rule at our house," said Mrs. Williams,"that if you don't keep your schaal work up, youcan't participate in extracurricular activities.Brian has been telling us that he's daing fine inschool. but we got a call from his math teacheryesterday, saying that he was failing and she waswondering why we hadn't responded to the noticesshe sent home. "

"I take it Brian didn't show them to you," saidSam.

"No, he didn't," said Mrs. Williams. "This is thefirst time he's ever lied to us and he's even hadTerry helping to cover for him. I know it's justbecause he wants to play for you and the Rocketsso badly. When we confronted him about it, hedenied it and made up some other story to try andcover his first lie. I don't know what to do. I justhate to take them off the team. "

"I'll back you and your husband on whateverdecision you make," said Sam. "It's moreimportant that your boys learn what's right than itis to play baseball. Tell you what. Why don't youlet me bring them home today? I'll take them outfor a treat and have a talk with them. "

"Would you?" said Mrs. Williams. "I know they'lllisten to you. Thank you, Coach Johnson."

Mrs. Williams got in her car and left the park. Brianand Terry came running over to Sam.

"Where. my mom going?" asked Terry.

"I told her I'd take you boys home today," saidSam. "You help me get all the gear loaded up andI'll treat you guys 10 a shake on the way home."

"All right!" shouted Brian.

Sam's Suburban was loaded up In no time. Seated ata booth in the ice cream shop, Sam looked to the Lordfor wisdom to talk to Brian and Terry.

"You boys love baseball, don't you?" asked Sam.

"You bet, Coach," said Brian, slurping up the lastbit ofhis shake.

"Yeah," said Terry. "I can't wait 'til I get to playwith the Rockets. "

"I'll bet you'd do just about anything to keepplaying baseball, too, huh?" said Sam.

"Anything," said Brian. "Baseball is the mostimportant thing there is."

"Would you even lie to play baseball?" Sam asked, looking directly at the boys.

The feeling of guilt could be read on both the boys'faces. Terry didn't know what to say and just keptglancing at Brian. Brian was trying to find words.

After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Brianfinally spoke up.

"If I would have told the truth, my parents wouldhave taken me off the team. "

Brian couldn't look Sam in the eyes. Tears began torun down Terry's cheeks.

"Do you boys remember what I talked about at thefirst practice?" said Sam. "Being the best that wecan be isn't just about having the best battingaverage or making outstanding plays. It's alsoabout developing the right kind ofcharacter. Whena person lies, they've just told you they can't betrusted. If they can't be trusted, how can the teamdepend on them? You never know for sure ifthey're telling you the truth."

"I've really made a mess of things," respondedBrian. "What am I going to do, Coach?"

"A real man-a man with character-would ownup to it."

"You mean, tell my parents?"

"And your math teacher-and get things right withyour brother here since you've gotten him in on it. "

"This would have been a whole lot easier if I wouldhave just told the truth in the first place," saidBrian.

"It always is," said Sam.

Sam took the boys home and dropped them off.

"We may not be at the game on Saturday, Coach,"said Brian, getting out of the truck.

"If that's how it turns out, that's the way it willhave to be," said Sam. "But if you do what's rightand tell the truth, you'll be a winner in my bookand in God's."

When Sam arrived at the game on Saturday, Brian andTerry were already there.

"I made things right, Coach," said Brian. "My '-..,..dad spanked me good. "

"Me, too," Terry piped up.

"But, " continued Brian, "he said since I tookresponsibility for it, he and Mom would let us stayon the team as long as I worked extra hard on mymath for the next few weeks. "

"You'd better warm up then," said Sam. "We'vegot a game 10 play. "
