To me, and so many of you, nothing says “holiday” like RMTC’s Holiday Spectacular! I’m so thrilled at how this year’s show has come together – something old, something new, something for everyone! I hope that our nearly 100 conservatory students will bring a smile to your face and some cheer to this most wonderful time of the year!
Let that cheer last into the new year by joining us for an incredible 2017 at RMTC. February is going to be one incredible month as we produce the remarkable Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill as well as a brand new work, The Green Book. Both of these pieces will focus us on human rights as we explore the concepts of safe passage and injustice. Be part of the community conversation at this most critical of times!
Then, rock on into spring with us for School of Rock and Dreamgirls – two musical powerhouses that will leave you begging for more. Don’t miss a minute! And - It’s not too late to take advantage of season ticket packages that can save you BIG this season! Check out website for the details!

RMTC Conservatory: Meet Aidan Alford
At Red Mountain Theatre Company one of our missions is to educate, train, and polish the performing arts skills of young artists. The RMTC Conservatory helps us fulfill that mission through the efforts of an elite group of musical theatre performers (ages 6-18) who rehearse year-round.
To give our audiences an inside look at the Conservatory Ensemble, we sat down with high school senior Aidan Alford, who has taken on leadership of the Performing Ensemble this year as its president. She’s been a part RMTC for 11 years and joined the Conservatory eight years ago.
Q: How you got involved with the Conservatory?A: My older sister was in the groups when she was younger. I took dance classes and enjoyed singing around the house, so my parents registered me for the summer workshop when I was 7. I loved it and became a member of the Conservatory when I was 10.
Q: What has your journey with the program been like?A: My experience has been a pretty bumpy road—full of ups and downs. The Conservatory is an intense training program that acts as a liaison to the real world and prepares its members for college. I’ve certainly had my fair share of struggles as I’ve risen up through the groups, but in the end, the struggles are what make the victories rewarding.
Q: You’ve taken on new responsibility as president of the Performing Ensemble this year. What made you want to pursue that role?A: I’ve always considered myself to lead by example, never a verbal leader. I have trouble finding my voice in the room. I will be attending college next year, where I will be forced to step out of my comfort zone. I was motivated to run for president to push myself out of my comfort zone to become a verbal leader.
Q: Were you nervous at all stepping into the role?A: I’m still nervous! When stepping into a position of leadership, I feel I hold more accountability for the group’s sake. I will continue to always be a little nervous because I care for the welfare of the group and don’t want to let anyone down.
Q: In what ways do you try to set an example for others as president? A: I think that we can all learn from one another, particularly from the younger members. Their fresh sets of eyes and eagerness to prove themselves is a reminder to the experienced members of the group not to lose that sense of awe and dedication the younger folks bring to the work.

Q: The Conservatory has a big performance coming up in RMTC’s Holiday Spectacular ’16. What can audiences expect? A: Get ready for phenomenal kids, rockettes, surfing (that’s right), and Elton John.
Q: What is your favorite number in the show?A: I’m quite the sentimentalist; therefore, I’m a sucker for the traditional finale: The “Take a Walk” Medley, featuring favorites like “O Holy Night,” “Breath of Heaven,” “Children Go,” and more.
Q: Do you have a favorite memory of a past Holiday Spectacular? A: We had a renovated version of “Little Drummer Boy” last year. There was an extreme vocal build throughout the number, and every night when we hit the vocal climax as a group, chill bumps would surface my entire body because of the enriching and powerful sound. You could actually feel the stage pulsing.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say about RMTC or the Conservatory?A: I think I can speak on behalf of the group by saying thank you to RMTC.

Amy Rankin (Costume Designer). I started sewing because everything I bought I had to alter. I continued to design clothing while working in corporate America, in accounting. I was offered a job to tour with an R&B artist. This led to 20+ years working in Wardrobe, touring the United States and internationally; affording me the opportunity to visit some great places and work with some awesome talent. In 2007, wanting to come off the road, I took on the challenge to costume Beauty and the Beast for Red Mountain Theatre Company. Over the ensuing years, I have cultivated my talents to evolve into the resident costume designer.
Tommy Thompson (Wig Master) is proud to be the Wig Master/Hair and Make-up designer for Red Mountain Theatre Company. He began designing for RMTC in the spring of 2014 with La Cage aux Folles. Other credit include Les Miserables, Miss Vulcan 1939, Young Frankenstein, The Wiz, Mary Poppins, The Secret Garden, Sister Act, and The Little Mermaid. He also works with the young actors in the RMTC Conservatory in the use of wigs and make –up as they develop their craft. When he is not working on a Red Mountain Theatre Company show, Mr. Thompson is the Company Manager at Opera Birmingham.
Sam J. Tumminello (Resident Composer, Arranger, and Sound Designer) is now a 17 year veteran of RMTC and the former Summerfest. Jay is a musical Jack-of-all-trades, putting most of his skills to use behind the scenes. Jay’s work can be heard at any given time coast to coast, having created arrangements or original music for Regal Productions in Los Angeles, The Broadway Rose in Portland, New American Theatre in Rockford, IL., and many cabaret performers in NYC. Always learning something new, Jay’s latest obsession is the accordion.
