VOCABULARY: ROOT WORDS

Reviewing and Remembering

Page 10: TO Mrs. Jessen’s Language Arts Class Where anything can happen and often does

WHAT ARE ROOT WORDS? AND WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

Root words are parts of words that carry the meaning or part of the meaning of the whole word An excellent example is “Bicycle”

“Bi” is from the Latin word that means “twice” or two “cycle” is from the Greek word that means “wheel”

The French put the two word pieces together to describe a two wheeled vehicle in 1863 (Why not before then??

The English borrowed the word and decided to keep it The English Language has borrowed many words and pieces

of words from other cultures (Would it shock you to learn English was originally a form of the German Language?)

Greek and Latin are the two ancient languages we most often encounter in English

AFFIXES AND BASES Root words we put at the beginning or end

of words are called “affixes” If the affix is at the front of the word we call

it a Prefix (“pre-” means “before” If the affix is at the end of the word we call it

a Suffix (“suf-” means to “fasten below, or behind”)

A prefix or a suffix changes or “modifies” the meaning of the word because it has a meaning of its own

The root word in the middle is referred to as the “Base”
