Well, it’s not a special celebration, but rather the City’s function of cleaning and keeping our streets safe from pre and post winter flash storms. In late September 2011, the City amended the overnight parking By-law to include arrangements for Winter Maintenance Events: snow storms that occur outside of the regular winter season. Residents are reminded that from December 1 to March 31 each year, parking of a vehicle on any street or part of a street within the City of Barrie between the hours of 12 midnight and 7 a.m. is prohibited and subject to a $30.00 fine ($20.00 early payment). Within the Downtown Business Improvement Area, on street parking is prohibited between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Notwithstanding these provisions, the City of Barrie can at anytime declare a “winter maintenance event”. Notice of such declaration will be communicated through the media and parking will be prohibited as specified in the Notice. Any vehicle found parked in contravention of By-law 2007-209 may be ticketed and/ or towed. By keeping the City streets clear of vehicles during this period, you allow the City crews access to help ensure that your roadways are maintained and that large emergency vehicles can get down the street. Parking is also prohibited over sidewalks and on City boulevards. The City of Barrie greatly appreciates your cooperation helping it keep the City streets clean and safe during the winter season. For more information on Winter Maintenance Events or Winter Control, please visit City Services under the Living section of Barrie.ca. Tony Grace of CTV will host this year’s event and he will be joined by local comedian Andrea Murray, who guarantees her audience a few surprises of her own. The Winning Categories & Prizes Artists in various mediums have been nominated, including those in the visual arts, the performing arts, the literary arts, and even those who help create art from a higher level such as performers, producers, and directors. Also, someone who has begun to develop a body of work in pursuing a professional artistic career can be nominated in the Emerging Artist category. This year, we revised the award categories and they now include the new Business award. We are delighted to name the categories and announce the nominees for 2011 as they are all so deserving of recognition for what they do: Excellence in Arts Category for the established professional artist (living or deceased) who has demonstrated creative originality, professional maturity and artistic leadership; Nominees: Glenn Coulson, Roy Hickling, John Hartman, Curley Bridges, Heather Kirk, Steve Winfield and Shayna Osborne. Emerging Artist Category for those beginning a professional career in the arts; Nominees: Jonathan Merchant, Jonathan Eskedjian, Sarah Melody, Cassandra Fox and Sarah Lochhead.
