  • To Our Dear Audience,

Welcome to 13: The Musical! As you’re about to learn, this is a show all about the wonders and horrors of life during middle school.

Ahh, middle school. I haven’t heard many people look back on those days with warm nostalgia. Confusing feelings, weird smells, regrettable hair. In my memory, the halls of my own middle school seemed to have only every other light bulb working, so it always seemed dark and, therefore, hard for anyone to see anyone else very well. I feel like that wasn’t entirely accidental.

This age is a time of transition when you’re no longer a child, but you’re not quite grown-up, either. Whether you know it at the time or not, you spend those years exploring and experimenting with who you will be for the rest of your life. That’s a lot to put on someone who, like the characters in this show, is just about to turn 13.

We’ve been so eager to share 13: the Musical with you; we think it’s a good match for who we are as a company. After all, R2P is a place where young people can explore, experiment, and discover who they are and who they want to be. And also there’s always a lot of singing.

I’m so proud of this group of young artists working onstage and off to bring you the show you’re about to see. They hail from all across the county. Some are taking on roles that are familiar to them, while others are testing the waters of a new and different discipline in the theatrical landscape. Some are making their R2P debuts, while others are seasoned veterans about to fly the nest and hone their craft in the post-high school world.

R2P has been making a pretty big transition this year, too. We’ve eliminated all financial barriers to entry for participation; anyone who wants to can be part of R2P for FREE! We’re getting close to the end of our first season in this new model, and thanks to the support of our community, it has gone beautifully. We’re a stronger and healthier organization than ever before.

Of course, like every nonprofit, the quest for financial sustainability is ongoing. In order to ensure that we can continue to keep our promises to the young people plan to serve in the coming season, we’re extending an invitation to you, your family and friends, and the rest of our community to join us by providing the support we’ll need to carry out our mission.

We’ve partnered with the local business GiveGab for a month-long crowdfunding campaign that we call “With Community and Jazz Hands for All!” The goal is to provide all of the funds we will need to keep the doors wide open to everyone for the 2016 season. Making a donation of any size is secure, fast, and easy (and there are great thank-you gifts, too). You can support the campaign generally or make your pledge in honor of a specific company member who has taken up the mantle as a “Champion” with a personal fundraising goal.

Get all the info at www.runningtoplaces.org or go to our campaign page at bit.ly/supportr2p.

We are so grateful to be part of a community that believes in its young people’s potential to do amazing things and to become the fullest, best versions of themselves possible. It is our honor to be a part of that journey, and we’re glad to have you here, too.

On behalf of the entire Running to Places family, thank you – and enjoy the show!

    Joey Steinhagen, R2P Artistic Director

BIOS ALYSSA SALERNO (Ensemble) is so pumped to be 13 with this crazy talented cast. This is Alyssa's 4th R2P show, as well as participating in her school shows at Dryden and summer shows at the Hangar Theatre. Since theatre is all she does, she doesn't have much time for other activities, but when she does, she enjoys singing, watching "Bones", and texting. Thanks to everyone who gave her rides and money for food. Enjoy the show! bit.ly/supportr2pwithalana

ANTONIO DANIEL CUEVAS (Ensemble) is happy to be appearing in his second Running to Places show. He was previously in The Wizard of Oz and has been in two IC film productions. He would like to thank Jeremy, Joey and Fatima for their excellent instruction and support.

ARI CUMMINGS (Brett): This is Ari's sixth Running to Places show. He has also been in DeWitt Middle Schools productions of Aladdin and 13. Ari is also a part of Vitamin L singing group. Ari thanks all of his friends and family that support him. Hope you enjoy! bit.ly/supportr2pwithari

  • !ADRIE CLARK (Ensemble) has eaten grilled cheese for most of her life. She has skied once (poorly), but she's going to school in Vermont so maybe she'll get there someday. She's been in some shows which you have probably seen and her parents have undoubtedly photographed. In her free time, Adrie dreams about being a world-famous doctor and sits in bed eating pizza rolls and watching Netflix. She has 4 1/2 friends, some of whom are in the show and one of whom did some very straight lines on the floor. Much love to Joey, Fatima, the fam, and the KTC. IMRI LESHED (Eddie) is thrilled to be in 13! Imri is going to be a sophomore at IHS in the fall. His favorite past roles include Evan Goldman in 13 at Dewitt Middle School, Austin in Physics Fair with the Kitchen Theatre Company, Jojo in Seussical, Dance Corps in Fame, and Tinman in The Wizard of Oz with R2P. Imri is also the 2014 recipient of the Harry L. Booth Award from Dewitt Middle School and the Erin Aljoe Schlather Inspiration Award from the Hangar Theatre. Imri would like to thank everybody involved with this show, his family, and his wonderful friends for all of their support. He also hopes that you don’t get too annoyed with his laugh… enjoy the show!

  • BAILEY OLMSTEAD (Malcolm) is excited as ever to be in his sixth Running to Places production. Bailey has recently been in such Running to Places productions such as Daisy Pulls It Off, where he was Vladimir Scoblowski. He was also the Wizard in Once Upon a Mattress. In his high school show at Newfield, Bailey played George Banks in their production of Mary Poppins. Bailey plans to pursue a career in writing and acting for TV and film. (All studio representatives – find Bailey after the show.) Bailey wants to thank his parents for carting him to rehearsals ad nauseum, and his friends and family for coming to support him and see the show. In addition, Bailey wants to thank all the production staff, without whom Bailey would be standing in the dark and singing a cappella. Thank you for not subjecting the audience to that. Thanks, and enjoy the show!

  • with his brother Declan and his friend Quinn (who are also the bassist and guitarist for this production’s pit band). Jasper is so excited and grateful to be a part of the R2P team. He is amazed at how talented and welcoming (and FUN) everyone in the company has been!

JENNI LI (Keyboard 2) is thrilled to play keyboard with the pit for the first time. She would like to thank her mother for her musical support throughout the years and John for getting her a piano. When Jenni isn't playing her instruments she enjoys swimming and her orange tabby Simba. Jenni will be a freshman at UVM this fall and she hopes you enjoy the show!

JEREMY PLETTER (Music Director) is the resident music director at R2P. Previous shows as Music Director with this company include Seussical, A Christmas Carol, and Into the Woods. In addition, Jeremy was seen on stage with R2P in Urinetown, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, and more. He also was in the Ithaca College Main Stage production of The Magic Flute. “Thank you all for coming and enjoy the show.” bit.ly/supportr2pwithjeremy JOEY STEINHAGEN (Artistic Director/Resident Director) grew up doing community theatre in a company called Song & Dance Associates that was surely the spiritual ancestor of Running to Places. He founded R2P in 2007 as a way to bring together the many passionate and talented young people of this area so they could create theatre, develop life skills, and make some of the best friendships of their lives – much as he did when he was young. He has been teaching, acting in, and directing theatre for young people throughout Tompkins County since 1993, and received his BFA in Acting from Ithaca College in 1996. Over the years, he has directed musicals and plays at Ithaca and Dryden High Schools; Dryden, Boynton, and DeWitt Middle Schools; the Northern Lights Learning Center; and the Hangar Theatre’s Kiddstuff series. Joey has taught acting at Ithaca College, Cornell, SUNY Cortland, Hangar Theatre’s Next Generation program, and the Ithaca Youth Bureau. As an actor, he has appeared at the Kitchen Theatre in Tony and the Soprano (“Tony,” world premiere), Precious Nonsense (“Pete,” world premiere), The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow (“Dr. Yakunin”), and We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay! (“Luigi”). He is grateful to his beautiful fiancé Uniit for all of her love, patience, and support. He wants to give a special shout-out to Kii. He is proudest of his favorite production: his son Aram. bit.ly/supportr2pwithjoey

JULIA MACHLIN (Assistant Stage Manager) is exited to be ASMing her first R2P show! Julia is usually onstage, but has loved getting her feet wet with stage management. Past with R2P include Munchkin Coroner in The Wizard of Oz, and Classmate in Daisy Pulls It Off. She would like to thank Joey and Jeremy for all their patience as she got used to the role of an ASM. "Enjoy the show!" bit.ly/supportr2pwithjulia

KAI FELDMAN (Richie) is extremely excited to be performing in the Kitchen Theatre for the second time! You may have seen Kai in The Wizard of Oz with R2P as the Gatekeeper! When Kai isn't onstage he enjoys doing acting camps, and soon hopefully dance camps! Enjoy the show! bit.ly/supportr2pwithkai

KEARA BYRON (Patrice) just graduated high school, is 18, and is playing a 13 year old. Keara has been in Running to Places since 6th grade, and this is her 20th and final R2P show (including pit and crew). It has been a long journey from playing Bullfrog in Honk! (2009). Some of her favorite roles with R2P have been Penny in Hairspray, Little Red in Into The Woods, Tiny Tina in Urinetown, and now of course, Patrice has made this list. Next year Keara will be attending Ithaca College pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre! “I would like to thank my voice teacher Sharon for helping me get to where I am today, my parents, the Danby carpool, Joey for being such an amazing director, mentor and friend for the past forever, Jeremy and Fatima for being amazing, the pit and crew, and of course the wonderful cast. Thank you for making my last show the best ever. I love you all. We’re just about to turn 13!” bit.ly/supportr2pwithkeara

KENDRA WALKUSKI (Kendra) is a upcoming senior at Dryden High School and is thrilled to be part of Running to Places production of 13! She has previously been seen in roles such as the Witch (Into The Woods, DHS), a Silly Girl (Beauty and the Beast, DHS) , the Young Kangaroo (Seussical, DHS), Ensemble in R2Ps production of Fame and many more. When not performing, you can find her singing with Vitamin L, dancing at PAI or sleeping. She would like to thank the cast for being an amazing family and also Joey, Jeremy, Fatima and the rest of the production crew for being such amazing teachers and friends. And we're just about to turn 13!

LOIE FAULKNER (Ensemble) is a rising senior at Ithaca High School who was formerly very excited to never go back to middle school. And yet, here we are. This is Loie's 13th R2P show (ironically). You previously may have seen her in Fame! earlier this year, or in any number of shows from past seasons. Join this incredibly angsty cast as we journey back to those awful three years we've all blocked out... Enjoy the show!

  • MADDI CARROLL (Ensemble) is a sophomore at Ithaca High School. She is excited to be in her third Running to Places show. Maddi’s favorite roles include Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (R2P) and the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella (Boynton Middle School). Maddi has been a part of choirs since she was 7 years old and has fallen in love with it. When she’s not at a rehearsal for whatever show she’s currently in, she enjoys playing guitar and taking photographs. She would like to thank her parents for the constant support, and her amazing friends who still love her even though she was constantly busy rehearsing for this show and barely saw them. Lastly, thanks to everyone who made this show possible, you guys rock. Enjoy the show! bit.ly/supportr2pwithmaddi

MADDIE VANDENBERG (Dance Captain) is a recent graduate of Ithaca High School, and she’s so excited to be working on her 20th show with Running to Places! She would like to thank Fatima for this awesome O-P-P Opportunity, Joey, Jeremy, the lovely folks at the Kitchen Theatre, and the whole cast and crew for being lovely and fun to work with. Enjoy the show!!

MAX AVRAMIS (Archie) is an upcoming senior at Lansing high school and is thrilled to be part of Running to Places production of 13! When not performing, you can find him singing with Vitamin L, hanging out with friends, or sleeping. He would like to thank Joey, Jeremy, Fatima, and the rest of the production crew for making this show such a wonderful experience! And we're just about to turn 13!

MIKE “SPARKLES” GARRETT (Lighting Designer): Mike’s interest in theatre began at a young age, but it was not until his junior year of high school that he was introduced to technical theater by his roommate. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science, but was most often seen in the Schwartz Center’s scene shop, where he began as stage carpenter, rising to lighting designer and eventually technical director for Leonard Bernstein’s Mass in 2009. He has worked as the productions manager for the Cornell Concert Commission, as well as Slope Day. Mike also served as the set designer, technical director, and production manager for the Melodramatics Theatre Company. He has run sound for many concerts and several R2P shows. His love of theatre also has led him to work in concerts, film, and web media. NICK MRAS (Ensemble) is going into 9th grade at Newfield High School and is excited to be in his 3rd Running to Places production! Favorite roles include playing "Tin Man" in the Hangar Theater's production of The Wiz, "Mr. Mayor" in Newfield’s production of Seussical and “Papa Ge” in Newfield’s production of Once on This Island. When he's not on stage entertaining, Nick enjoys drumming, chorus, soccer, hanging out with friends and making people laugh! Nick would like to send a special thank you to his family and friends for their support. Hope you enjoy the show!

QUINN BEDORE (Guitarist): This is Quinn's first R2P performance, and it has been a fun changeup from the rock music of The MonkeySquids. He enjoys spending time with friends and family and working on music and building robots with Code Red. Quinn has found all of the R2P family to be warm and friendly, and is thankful for all of the camaraderie. He hopes you enjoy the show.

RACHEL FRANK (Costume Coordinator/Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be a part of her 6th R2P show. This is her first time working backstage. Previously, you may have seen Rachel in The Wizard of Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West. Rachel would like to thank her parents for being the reason she was exists and Jack Honig for being her inspirational hero.
