A D V E R T I S E M E N T
For the third year in a row, the Club will join millions of people around the world in switching off all non-essential lights at 8:30pm during Earth Hour 2020 on 28 March.
We will be organising activities such as handicraft workshops that aim to educate participants on recycling, upcycling and reduction of waste. Guided visits to the Club’s Urban Garden are back by popular demand and those taking part can learn about how we use organic matter to cultivate the different types of crops (some members might have noticed or even taken selfies in front of the rows of brilliant sunflowers at Cabana—these were grown at our Urban Garden).
Parents who wish for their kids to build eco-consciousness should sign them up for these activities to understand better the imminent threat of climate change and the far-reaching and catastrophic consequences of harmful and polluting activities that are already ravaging planet Earth sooner than we expected.
In the battle against climate change, what can members do to reduce carbon footprint and at the same time, help the Club save money?
P R E S I D E N T ’ S M E S S A G E
Making a conscious effort to cut back on disposable waste is one way. Members can help by eliminating unnecessary single-use plastic waste, which poisons our seafood and waters and escalates climate change, and choosing reusables instead. For example, you could bring your own bags instead of using the Club’s plastic bags for storing wet clothing. Likewise, we would like to encourage members to use their own tiffin carriers for takeaways instead of our Styrofoam containers. And really, do you need a straw to consume beverage? You really don’t.
These actions may be small but their effects add up.
Members can help by saving water too.
The Club will be launching a member education programme to promote water conservation at the Club in conjunction with World Water Day 2020 on 22 March. The Communications Department is creating posters and producing engaging bite-size videos featuring our Child and Junior Members as programme ambassadors to nudge their elders and peers to play their part to use water wisely, so keep a look-out for these publicity materials.
Advocacy comes in different forms and not all require loud battle calls to rally support. Advocacy that is effective often includes initiating dialogues and co-creating workable and sustainable solutions with those on the ground. Hence, I again urge members with good ideas to improve the Club and our work to write to us at [email protected].
By harnessing the energy and collective wisdom of our membership, we will also gain a lot more viewpoints and perspectives, which can help build consensus.
I look forward to members’ continued support and your participation in the Club’s many activities.

WHERE EAST MEETS WESTWith the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year holidays and festivities following one after another, it is no wonder that one might still be high on gifts, ang bao and most notably, yummy goodies! You could be indulging in roast turkey and exchanging gifts one moment, then feasting on pineapple tarts and giving or receiving ang bao the next. Everything happens so fast that we can understand if you lose count of the calories.
Two special days in February this year that many of us celebrate are Valentine’s Day on 14 February and the Spring Lantern Festival (元宵节) on the 15th day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar or 8 February. The latter is a festival with great significance, as it marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. On this day in ancient times and less so these days, children would go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜灯谜).
Here is a little fun fact: did you know that the Spring Lantern Festival is also Chinese Valentine’s Day? In the past, young maidens would be dressed to the nines and go out to find suitable life partners. They would write their names on mandarin oranges and throw them into rivers or seas, for them to be picked up by their supposedly Mr Right. Perhaps you would like to head to Singapore River on the day to see if there is anyone, at the risk of being fined for littering, is still keeping this custom alive?
Some East-meets-West events that the Club had held like the Rodney Strong Vineyards Wine & Chinese Cuisine-pairing Dinner and the Dalmore Whisky & Mod-Asian Cuisine-pairing Dinner drew overwhelmingly favourable participation. It is a real treat to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds,
3
In ancient Chinese culture, the seal is equivalent to a signature. In East-meets-West Singapore, some people like our General Manager prefer to use both.
so be on the look-out for upcoming fusion dinners at Jackson Miller and Jade Phoenix to have a taste of East-meets-West.
In such times of celebration, we ought to also keep others who are suffering in our thoughts and prayers. The bushfires in Australia have razed countless houses, leaving many homeless and displaced.
Human activities have contributed to such disasters and calamities. Greenhouse gas emissions, released during the combustion of fossil fuels, exacerbate climate change and play a role in altering temperatures.
This year’s Earth Hour is on 28 March and the Club joins the rest of the world to take part in the landmark conservation movement. Members can head to the Club to learn more about recycling, upcycling, reduction of waste, how our actions affect the climate and the planet, etc.
We have adjusted the air conditioner’s temperature to a more energy-conserving and comfortable one recommended by BCA. This is a small step taken by the Club to help save the Earth.
On a lighter note, I wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day! Love your partner, your family, your friends and most importantly, always love yourself and don’t forget to love the Earth—after all, we have only one.

BULLETIN
Club recognised for producing swim talents
Our Club was recently conferred again the Bronze Award in Singapore Swimming Association’s (SSA) Podium Performance Grant Programme two years in a row for our good track record in producing quality young athletes for the nation.
The programme recognises swimming clubs in Singapore with high performing outcomes and provides necessary resources to sustain their efforts. The Bronze Award comes with a grant of $4,000 that our Club can use to improve high performance training programme that supports continued development of our swimmers.
Out of SSA’s 100 affiliate clubs, our Club was one of five awarded.
Filming By Mediacorp
Mediacorp recently filmed episodes of an upcoming Channel 8 series My Guardian Angels (单翼天使) at our Badminton Hall.
My Guardian Angels is a female-centric drama revolving around three women played by Zoe Tay (郑惠玉), Kym Ng(钟琴) and Hong Ling (洪凌), who strive to do their best for their children while dealing with whatever life is throwing at them, without the presence of their partners.
My Guardian Angels will air on Channel 8 on 26 March.
No Pouring of Water onto Electric Heaterin Saunas There was a power trip at MSCP Male Changing Room’s Sauna recently. The power trip was caused by excessive water in the electric heater. An empty plastic bottle, believed to have contained water, was found discardednext to the heater.
We would like to again remind members not to pour water onto the heaters. The heaters automatically dispense water every 15 minutes, so there is no need for additional water.
Power trips at the Saunas are dangerous, as the resulting sudden darkness may cause members to lose orientation and hurt themselves.
Causing a power trip is an inconsiderate behaviour, as the Sauna would have to be closed for the problem to be rectified and other members would not be able to use the facility. In addition, repairs are costly.
Members are encouraged to call the Duty Manager at9710 6447 if they see such acts, so we may take disciplinary actions against the errant member(s).
Removal of ATM Due to low utilisation rate, we have removed the UOB ATM that is at the Main Entrance so as not to incur the annual licence fee.
