Two Smiths, Alex and Justin, were added as San Francisco 49ers team captains on Saturday. Jim Harbaugh revealed the news at the conclusion of the team’s first official practice with the 53-man roster and eight-man practice squad intact. After practice, 49ers players filled out ballots in a team meeting which were then quickly tabulated by first-round pick A.J. Jenkins and second-round pick LaMichael James. The two players with the most votes had the same last name. Alex Smith and Justin Smith, join last year’s captains, Frank Gore and Patrick Willis, who are both serving two-year terms according to the 49ers coach. “It represents the team well,” Gore said, “especially with Justin and Alex coming out.” Harbaugh and the players were the only ones to vote on the captains.“Congratulations to those men,” the 49ers coach said. “There is no greater honor than to be elected captain by your teammates.” Despite having many veteran leaders littered throughout San Francisco’s roster, there wasn’t much of a debate when it came time to pick two more leaders to join Willis and Gore. With captains named and the 49ers first opponent in sight, a suddenly less-crowded locker room had a sharp focus. “We had a great team last year and added some new guys who can help this team,’ Gore said. However, selection to the 53-man roster isn’t the ultimate goal, not to Harbaugh, nor to his players. “I’m sure this has taken place, and it’s my hope that every man on the 53-man roster and the eight youngsters that are on the developmental roster, this will not be the ultimate day of this year,” Harbaugh said. “This isn’t their ultimate goal, the high moment of their year. They’re putting a plan together to stay a part of the San Francisco 49ers, this fraternity that goes back to the 1930’s, a group of men playing in the National Football League.”

To Staley, the feeling is universal in the 49ers locker room. “All the guys who know that; know the expectations. You can’t relax because you’ve made the team.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Alex Smith broke a San Francisco 49ers franchise record previously held by Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young and did so while leading his team to an inspiring road victory over the Green Bay Packers. On Sunday, Smith was absolutely sharp in a 30-22 win at Lambeau Field.

He completed 20 of 26 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns and a 125.6 quarterback rating. The 49ers are 11-0 when Smith posts a 100.0 rating or better and the team, more importantly, is 1-0 to start the 2012 regular season. “Alex Smith was terrific,” Jim Harbaugh said. Smith’s efficiency helped him throw his 185

th consecutive pass without an interception, putting him

ahead of Young’s previous franchise record of 184 attempts without a turnover. Teammates were thoroughly impressed with the way Smith, the eighth-year quarterback, led the 49ers to a big win a matchup of Super Bowl contenders. “I think he’s very poised,” said cornerback Tarell Brown, who did his part in limiting Aaron Rodgers’ production for the Packers. “Alex is a leader of this team and we rallied around him. He did a great job of conducting the offense, doing what he was supposed to do and putting guys in the right positions to make plays.” Harbaugh agreed.“I thought he was great,” the 49ers coach stressed. “All game he used his legs, his arm, his mind, his toughness. He was really efficient tonight.” Besides moving the ball successfully to many of his offensive weapons, Smith and the 49ers did not turn the ball over, extending the franchise’s record mark of 26 quarters without a turnover.

“I think we played good team football for 60 minutes,” Smith said after the big road win. “It wasn’t perfect by any means, but everyone was helping each other out and executing. It’s tough to come in here on the road on opening day in a loud place, a lot of things against you. And we were able to come out with a win.” It didn’t look as if Smith and the 49ers were going to start out as fast as they did. Smith and the 49ers went three-and-out to start the game, but saw points go on the board on the next five offensive possessions. San Francisco punted just once in the first half, picking up 14 first downs while building a 16-7 lead. The 49ers first touchdown of the game came on a riffled Smith pass to veteran wide receiver Randy Moss, who ran freely down the field from the left slot to catch his 70

th red zone touchdown.

“We got a good look,” Smith explained of his first touchdown pass of the season. “(Moss) blew open and made a great catch. It was a great play, great play-call down there, great play-call by design. Smith’s second touchdown of the game, a 4-yard strike to tight end Vernon Davis, was his most impressive throw of the day, according to Harbaugh. Despite having Packers safety Morgan Burnett draped over Davis in the end zone, Smith’s low throw was perfectly placed for his tight end to receive. “He put it in the only spot it could be,” Harbaugh said. It wasn’t the only time the 49ers quarterback found his intended target; Smith’s 76.9 completion percentage was his second highest output of his career. Entering a Week 2 matchup with the undefeated Detroit Lions on “Sunday Night Football” will certainly grab the 49ers attention soon, but for now, the club can take pride in coming together in a historic, hostile environment. “The great thing about this is we came on the road and the team showed out,” Brown said. “When you have the opportunity to go on the road and play in a hostile environment like this, you want to see the character and heart of your team. We definitely displayed that today.” So did Smith, the recently elected offensive co-captain. “This win says a lot about his character and the things he does for this team,” Brown said.

While the San Francisco 49ers are busy prepping for the season with Training Camp practice and preseason tune-ups, the 49ers Kids Club and the newly formed 49ers Crib Club are gearing up for their own football season. The 49ers hosted their first Kids Club Day at Great America on Aug. 17, offering all members and their friends and families to visit California’s Great America theme park for a day full of roller coasters, thrills, and of course, 49ers football. Upon entering the park, members were greeted by the 49ers Kids Club booth and spent the day exploring rides and attractions. In the afternoon, everyone was invited to a special ice cream social which included build-your-own-sundaes, appearances by the 49ers mascot Sourdough Sam and the Gold Rush squad, as

well as face painting, and giveaways. “It was great for my son to meet Sourdough Sam up close and personal,” Kids Club father Chris Alston said. “Getting his autograph will make this season all the more memorable.” The afternoon ended on a high note with several members winning pairs of tickets to the team’s Aug. 30 preseason matchup against the San Diego Chargers at Candlestick Park. The Kids Club fun continued this

week, as the 49ers hosted 25 Kids Club Gold members and their families at team headquarters August 22 as part of its “VIP Preseason Practice” contest, which ran through July and August to welcome members into the 2012 season. Kids Club members and their families were invited to watch a 49ers Training Camp practice followed by an autograph session. Along with a viewing of practice, members hung out with CEO Jed York and Sourdough Sam, who stopped by to entertain. “We got Patrick Willis’ autograph... and my kids loved it,” Carmina Radcliffe said. “My son was able to get more autographs than in years past.” Next, children were invited onto the turf field to learn how to tackle and throw a football in the 49ers Youth Football running back, linebacker and quarterback drills. “Events like these are a great way to get our youngest fans closer to the team,” stated Jared Muela, 49ers Youth Football Manager. “The 49ers Kids Club is great for creating special opportunities. After the kids watch practice on the field, the members get a chance to get out and run some of the drills they just saw on the field. My hope is that it gives everyone a better understanding of the game and a closer connection to it.” For more information on the 49ers Kids Club and upcoming events and contests, visit 49ers.com/KidsClub
