Coal Preparation Society of India

Coal-fired electricity is responsible for producing 40 percent of the world's power and about 70 percent of its steel. Besides this, over 80% of world's cement production is also coal dependent. On socio economic front, the coal industry employs millions worldwide and provides billions of people with electricity. The environmental consequences of coal use, such as water contamination and habitat destruction, are common. Burning coal adds millions of tonnes of dangerous particulates and greenhouse gases, including carbon, to the atmosphere.

Coal is the most important and abundant fossil fuel in India. It accounts for 55% of the country's energy need. The country's industrial heritage was built upon indigenous coal.

India's hard coal deposits spread over 27 major coalfields that are mainly confined to eastern and south central parts of the country. The lignite reserves are spread mostly in western and southern part of the country.

As per the Geological Survey of India, country's prognostic coal resources are estimated at 308 billion Tonnes (BT), of which about 140 BT are of proven category. Lignite resources are estimated as 46 BT including over 6 BT in proven category.

India's known petroleum and natural gas resources are rather meagre. As a result, India imports over 83% of its annual petroleum and gas requirement. The quantum of imports is projected to increase further in coming years.

The present coal consumption in the country was over 850 million tonnes (MT), including about 190 MT of imported coal. The total consumption is projected to increase to 1.50 BT in next five years or so.

As on 1st April 2017, India's electricity generation was over 329 GW. Of this coal based thermal generation capacity is about 60%, contributing over 70% to total power generation.

Therefore, coal is of vital importance to India's energy supply as well as long-term energy security plans.

While coal reserves are quite adequate and comfortable, the quality of coal is rather inferior compared to other parts of the world. The ash content in coal varies widely from 24% to 55% and sometimes more, with heat value varying from over 7000 kilo cal/kg (in small % age) to as low as 2200 kilo cal/kg in majority of coals.

The high ash content in coal can be reduced to a desired level by simple washing processes. The use of washed coal having lower ash content and higher heat value in power generation results in more efficient combustion; reduced CO2 emissions and other economic benefits for the generating company. Therefore, coal washing is often termed as the first rung on the clean coal technologies ladder. In simple words, adoption and adaptation of high efficiency low emission (HELE) power generation technologies like super and ultra super critical and gasification will necessarily require coal of uniform quality, lower ash content and higher heat value to ensure their successful implementation.

Representing India's commitment to Clean Coal to the world, Coal Preparation Society of India (CPSI) is a non-profit, non-government professional body having members from coal, power, iron

and steel sectors and their allied industries. CPSI has been dedicatedly promoting washing of high ash domestic coal to improve quality and enhance the calorific value, making it more suitable for use in High Efficiency Low Emission (HELE) power generating systems. Such efforts will lead to more environment friendly usage of coal as a source of energy. It will therefore be a step which will facilitate fulfilling the countries commitment to decisions taken in COP 21.

Main Objectives of CPSI inter alia are :

• To act as a facilitator in policy formulation in coal beneficiation and preparation.

• To provide an effective network amongst coal producers, consumers, coal washery operators, technical and research organisations, venture capitalists both domestic and international.

• To provide an independent platform for deliberating important issues pertaining to technological, operational, financial, commercial and policy aspects of the Indian Coal Preparation Industry.

• To promote and encourage any new idea beneficial for India, encourage international companies and professional global bodies to exchange information on demonstrated, prevalent state of art technologies relevant to Indian coal industry.

• India's commitment to environment.

CPSI is registered under the Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 and its head office is located in New Delhi.

CPSI is a member of the International Organizing Committee (IOC) of the International Coal Preparation Congress (ICPC) which is held once in three years. The International Organizing Committee (IOC) is a body in which so far 15 countries are represented through non-government organizations which deal in their respective countries with the issues relating to coal preparation. CPSI is a member of IOC representing India.

CPSI is an Associate Member of the World Coal Association - a global industry association formed of major international coal producers and stakeholders and has bilateral relationship with IEA Clean Coal Centre, UK for promoting clean coal technologies for use in High Efficiency Low Emission (HELE) power generating systems.

CPSI is a Member of ASSOCHAM and also an Associate Member of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

About sixty large companies both public and private are Life Corporate Members of CPSI and more are joining.

A technical magazine, CPSI Journal is published once every three months and is circulated, both in print and soft versions to over 1200 industry readers within India and abroad.

Monthly E Bulletin which captures all major happenings in energy sector and circulated by e-mail.

Conference proceedings and technical reports are brought out occasionally.

CPSI organises a biennial international conference on topical and current issues pertaining to coal in general and coal washing in particular.

CPSI's Network

Publications and Activities

Roundtables and workshop on current topics and policy related issues are periodically organised in association with the concerned government agency/ ministry.

Special meetings are organised as and when any renowned subject expert (s) are visiting India from various IOC member countries.

CPSI's global network includes all the 15 IOC member countries. CPSI has special bilateral relationship and mutual understanding with all member countries (through designated associations and societies), by way of exchange of technology related information, participation in roundtable, workshops and conferences. Two more major coal producing countries – Indonesia and Colombia, are expected to join the ICPC in near future.

First ICPC was held in Paris in 1950. The 9th ICPC was held in New Delhi in the year 1982. The last ICPC, 18th in the series, was held from 28th June to 1st July 2016 in St Petersburg, Russia. As per the decision of the IOC the 19th ICPC will be held in New Delhi in 2019. India is getting this opportunity after 37 years.

The concept of an International Coal Preparation Congress (ICPC) was developed through the Allied Coal Commission which was an offshoot of the Marshall Plan for redeveloping Europe after World War II. The first International Organizing Committee (IOC) consisted of members from Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, United Kingdom, and the United States. The first ICPC was held in 1950 in France and subsequent Congresses were held in Germany, Belgium, UK, USA, Poland, Australia, Russia, India, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Turkey etc.

The goals of the ICPC interalia, are :

• to ensure the growth and development of the coal preparation industry, support and promotion of scientific and technical cooperation

• to facilitate the exchange of information in the areas of state-of-art technologies, economics and environmental safety pertaining to the field of coal preparation;

• to bring together experts from different countries in order to form professional contacts, exchange experimental results, and promote international cooperation.
