Welcome to Lakota Local Schools. I am truly honored to serve as the Superintendent for the Lakota Local School District.

As I get settled here at Lakota, I will be embarking on a listening tour to get to know as many students, staff members, parents,

residents and community and business leaders as I can. I want to take the time to have a real conversation with as many people as possible so I can get to know you and learn more about the priorities of this great community.

One think I know for sure is that you can continue to expect great opportunities and great value out of the Lakota Local School District. The teachers, staff and administration are committed to providing each student an excellent educational experience.

Our focus is on high academic achievement, exploration and opportunity, and individualized measures of success through careful preparation. This emphasis on outstanding instruction is evident at every grade level – with 91% of Lakota parents rating the district’s quality of education as excellent or good.

We work hard to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment in which each child is comfortable and secure. From modern, data-driven instructional approaches – to the incorporation of technology and other resources, our exceptional staff offer personalized support to match the diverse needs of our students.

Such programs are possible because the district runs an effective and efficient day-to-day operational budge. I know the district is committed to strong fiscal management practices that have put the finances in a stable operations outlook for the next few years. This is important as we continue to look at leveraging educational offerings for students in a fiscally responsible manner.

Moreover, certainly we could not offer the best possible start for our students without the support of this community. We consider our parents, business leaders and local residents as partners. From Parents ensuring homework is completed to corporations involved in our internship programs, from volunteers helping at the community service projects, all combine to complement the work our outstanding teachers are doing in the classroom.

Thank you for your support and I hope you will take the time to learn more about the great opportunities and great value we offer.

Yours in Education,

Matt MillerMatt Miller

Keith Castner // VARSITY HEAD COACH

Keith Castner has been the girls softball head coach since Lakota West was opened in 1997. Castner fi rst guided the West softball team to a GMC championship in 2003. This was also the fi rst championship won by a Lakota West team in any spring sport. Also occurring in 2003 softball became the fi rst Firebird girls sports program to reach the 100 cumulative victory’s milestone. Castner has now coached the Firebirds to six  league titles by adding championships in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2014.  After each of these six championship seasons, the Greater Miami Conference coaches voted him the league coach of the year.  Castner has also led the Firebirds to the OHSAA State Final Four on three occasions (’05, ’06, ’11). The record for the years as the head coach of the Lakota West Softball program is 410-157.Castner began coaching softball at the old Lakota high school where he was assigned to the freshman team in 1988. After two years with the freshman team he moved up to take over the junior varsity team, and also assisted his brother Steve at the varsity level. When Lakota split into East and West, Steve took over the head coaching reins at Lakota East and Keith began his head coaching career at West.A 1983 graduate of Lakota high school, Castner excelled on the gridiron earning all GMC honors as a defensive back in 1982. He went on to enjoy a successful four year playing career with the Georgetown College of Kentucky football team. Castner graduated from Georgetown with a BA degree in psychology in 1987. He then became a teaching assistant and simultaneously began work at Mount St. Joseph’s college to obtain his teaching credentials in special education.  He also coached high school football every fall from 1987 through 2012.Coach Castner is an intervention specialist at the Lakota West Freshman School and has two sons Colton (9 years old) and Westyn (8 years old). The Lakota West Softball Family lives by the motto of “PLAY HARD AND PLAY WITH CLASS”
