Good Afternoon welcome to the Mackoy Stadium to all of today’s visitors old & new you will see

we still have work in progress but we are also happy to announce the 1st opening of our new

clubhouse. Initially it is only the bar that will be in operation at the moment. It is hoped to have the

tea bar fully functional in the next few weeks.

Today we welcome Mark Moseley’s Terra side along with their strong band of supporters. Mark

was here last season with AFC Bournemouth U23’s but a lot of his team this will be their first visit

to the Mackoy Stadium. Since our last home match the Boatmen picked up another win this time

in the HFA Senior Cup away to Newport (IOW). The Boatmen have had a successful run of

games at long last 3 home wins and 1 away. Today’s game will be a big ask for us to get a result

however at this stage last season we went to Slough Town got a draw then lost in extra time in

the replay. We expect to see our biggest crowd of the season so far today, once again media

focus is on the Boatmen we have Cliff Pledge from BBC Radio Solent covering todays match.

If today’s match is drawn we will travel to the Bob Lucas Stadium next Tuesday for the replay, our

next scheduled match is away to Willand Rovers on Saturday 28th we have a coach travelling to

the game if you require a seat contact Dave Diaper to book your seat.

Off the field work is still in progress and Claire is working hard to get work completed in the

clubhouse. We have waited a long time for this to happen at the club and now the clubhouse is in

situ we all have to remain patient for the completion. Like everything regarding building works you

encounter hiccups. We are already indebted to the numerous volunteers that we have had help

out recently to get us to where we are today. If there is anyone who wants to get involved in any

type of sponsorship, alternatively if you are able to volunteer any services that the club is in need

of to complete the work at the ground please Contact: Claire Paine on 07887 778266

Also our reserves are preforming well and their last two victories have taken them top of the

Wyvern Premier division and they are also unbeaten in their last six matches next Wednesday

they travel to Laverstock & Ford for their Wyvern Challenge Cup match.

Our Under 18’s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup last Monday losing out to Moneyfields U18’s by 4

-2 this was a repeat of the HCYL League Cup Final last season at Hartley Wintney where the

Boatmen lost out on penalties.

Hope you enjoy today’s match and travel home safely.

Greg ~ Sholing FC Secretary

Clarke Willmott Man of the Match : Dan Miller Ten-men Sholing clinched their third successive victory inside a week with a fully deserved win over Cirencester Town. Dan Mason scored a typical spectacular goal, but Cirencester grabbed a quality equaliser on half time. After Alex

Sawyer had put the Boatmen back in front, Jake Hoole was given a red card, but despite being a man down, Sholing looked the better team and got a deserved 3rd late on after some great skill & composure by Brad Targett. Team News: James Lauder & Brad Targett dropped to the bench with Alex Sawyer & Marvin McLean returned to the starting line-up. TJ Cuthbertson was available and Dean Faithfull also returned from injury as both took a bench seat, while Owen Royl again missed out through injury. The Boatmen took the lead with their first meaningful attack in the sixth minute. Good pressure from Marlon Mason on the left

back, gained possession with Bryon feeding Marvin Mclean down the left to run in on goal. Marv's angled shot was well saved by Cirencester keeper Lewis Clayton with the ball looping into the air. It dropped to the waiting DAN MASON, who connected perfectly with a first time 16 yard left foot volley that fizzed past two defenders on the goal-line. Moments later Owen Roundell headed straight at the away keeper with a header from a corner. The majority of the first half was even and consisted of a number of set pieces for both sides. However, there was no clear cut chances and neither goalkeeper had to make a save, although both were dominant when dealing with crosses into the box. This was down to no lack of effort, but it seemed that defences were on top. Moments after Bryon Mason had flashed a header wide from a corner, Jake Hoole was booked for an aerial challenge which appeared to be a clash of heads, but the referee indicated he thought an elbow was involved. Just as the Boatmen thought they would be ahead at the break, Cirencester equalised in added time. A corner delivery from the left was cleared by the defence,

but the ball fell to John Dennis on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder controlled the ball before curling it into the far corner, via the inside of the upright. It was a great finish that ensured the score-line was level and that probably was a fair reflection of the first half proceedings, despite Sholing clearly annoyed at conceding right on half time. HT : 1-1 After a slow start to the second period under the hot sun, Sholing retook the lead on the hour mark. A fine spell of possession

concluded with Jamie Bulpitt spotting the run of ALEX SAWYER and bending an inch perfect pass into his stride. Sawyer advanced and clipped the ball past the onrushing keeper and it rolled gently into the opposite corner. In response Cirencester went straight up the other end and won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. This set piece was blocked at source and the secondary shot from Oliver Artwell was comfortably saved by Ryan Gosney. Right back Tobi Falodi, who was again impressing in only his second start for Sholing, was booked when the Cirencester forward appeared to just stumble and run into him. It was Tobi's last involvement in the game, with TJ Cuthbertson coming on in his place. Sholing were to suffer a setback when they were reduced to ten-men in the sixty-sixth minute. Jake Hoole was shown a red card for a foul on a Cirencester player. Hoole appeared to have his shoulder grabbed as he went into a challenge, taking him off his feet as he connected with the opposition player. The ref saw it as dangerous and gave him a straight red. In response to their numerical disadvantage, Marvin Mclean slotted into his normal left back position to preserve defensive numbers in the

hope of protecting their narrow lead and Byron Mason sat a little deeper in midfield. Although Cirencester had a spell of possession and a couple of corners, they appeared to lack ideas in the final third and it was the home side who looked comfortable and were creating the better chances. In the seventh-ninth minute substitute Brad

Targett saw a shot cleared off the line with the ball finding its was to Bryon Mason on the edge of the box. The captain hammered goalwards, but saw his effort go inches over the crossbar with Lewis Clayton beaten. However, Sholing were to make the points safe in the 88th minute when a throw-in from TJ Cuthbertson was well controlled with his back to goal by Dan Mason and his deft flick found BRAD TARGETT who switched the ball onto his other foot, sending his marker sprawling in the process and Brad coolly placed the ball past the exposed keeper from 10 yards. It earned Sholing the three points and their second win in the Southern League, lifting them to 13th as they look a much sharper side than in the early stages of the season. The win is also another confidence boost ahead of the huge FA Cup tie on Saturday versus

Weymouth. FT : 3-1 Report by Connor Steel

CLUB HISTORY

Weymouth Football Club was founded in 1890. Formed as an amateur club the club is nicknamed "The Terras" due to the

terra-cotta and blue quartered shirts they originally wore.

The club's impact on Dorset's football scene was immediate and we won the Dorset Junior Cup for the first three seasons,

prompting the Dorset FA to re-classify us as a senior club.

After winning the Western League Championship in 1923, the club joined the Southern League and adopted professionalism.

However financial difficulties led to the club returning to amateur status and the Western League in 1928.

After the Second War the club were forced to start again, in the Western League Division 2, but achieved promotion in 1948

and then third place in Division 1 the following season.

Weymouth returned to the Southern League for the 1949-50 season and remained until becoming founder members of the

Alliance Premier League in 1979-80, finishing as runners-up in the inaugural season.

The Terras became Southern League Champions in 1964-65 and 1965-66 and they share with Yeovil Town and Telford United

the distinction of playing all 20 seasons in the Premier Division prior to it's temporary disbanding.

Weymouth have enjoyed considerable FA Cup success: in 1949 they became Manchester United's first FA Cup opponents

back at Old Trafford after the War and were not disgraced in a 0-4 defeat, in the 3rd round. In 1962 we reached the Fourth

round before losing 0-2 away at Preston North End.

In 1987 the club moved from its harbourside Recreation Ground to the Wessex Stadium and - for a while - it looked as if

promotion to the Football League would materialize. After coming close, however, the club were relegated back to the Southern

League (1989) - and even lower - before returning to the Premier Division in 1997.

Following a succession of seasons treading water, the club was taken over in 2004 and a new board of directors installed Steve

Claridge as player-manager with a mission to bring success to the club.

Galvanising club and town, with league attendances averaging 1490, Claridge led the Terras to runners-up spot in his first

season and promotion to the Nationwide South League.

The club returned to full time professionalism in 2005 and celebrated with the Nationwide South title at the end of that season.

Our initial season back in the Conference resulted in an 11th place finish, but the club struggled the following season before

being led to safety by manager John Hollins. His tenure ended at the start of 2008 and Alan Lewer became manager in January

2009.

At the start of 2009 Weymouth's financial difficulties surfaced, leading to the resignation of chairman Curtis. Former chairman

Ian Ridley replaced him in March and - days later - Lewer was replaced by former Welsh manager Bobby Gould. Despite his

experience the club was relegated, having only gained a single point since the majority of the first team had walked out in

February.

In May the club brought in Matty Hale - a popular ex-player - as their new manager, with another ex-player Ian

Hutchinson as his assistant.

After a disappointing start to the 2009-10 season Hale stepped down and Hutchinson was appointed caretaker

manager.

Following months of financial problems and near liquidation the club was taken over by George Rolls at the end of

November 2009. After defeat by Chelmsford City in mid January 2010 Hutchinson was dismissed - followed by his

assistant Andy Mason - and replaced by ex-Birmingham City player Jerry Gill. However Gill only lasted 44 days

before he resigned leaving assistant Andy Harris in charge.

At the end of the 2009-10 season the club were relegated from the Blue Square South to the Zamaretto Premier

League. Ian Hutchinson and Andy Mason returned to the club at the beginning of the following season with the task

of rebuilding the Terras' squad on a vastly reduced budget.

After two post Christmas defeats Hutchinson was again relieved of his duties and succeeded by the vastly

experienced Martyn Rogers, a former successful manager of Tiverton Town and ex-Weymouth player.

Rogers successfully steered the club away from the relegation places, but was not awarded a contract for the 2010-

11 season as the club appointed local man (and another ex-player) Brendon King to the manager's role with Mattie

Groves as his assistant.

In February 2012 a consortium of local men and club supporters, led by then Chairman Nigel Biddlecombe, were

able to buy the club and set about trying to both stabilize the Terras and lead it's recovery.

After a good 9th place finish in 2012-13 results were disappointing as 2013-14 got going and King paid the price

when he was replaced by the club's vastly experienced goalkeeper Jason Matthews, initially as caretaker, who has

taken to the mantle of player-manager with fantastic enthusiasm.

Jason certainly made his mark during his first season in charge but the Terras fell agonising short missing out on the

play offs after being well placed at Christmas. The same story occurred in the following season where the Terras

again missed out on a play off place on the last day of the season. The 2016-2107 season was also a major

disappointment for the club as yet again we fell short finishing 10th. Matthews paid the price for the underperfor-

mance and left the club after the final of the Dorset Senior Cup with Mark Molesley and Paul Maitland acting as

caretaker managers. Mark’s credentials and skill immediately impressed the club’s board who acted quickly to

appoint Mark as manager before the last game of the season. This faith was repaid by the influx of quality players

and a brand of exciting football. It was so near yet so far as despite qualify for the end of season play offs the Terras

were undone by three wonder goals after a long midweek trip to Kings Lynn to miss out on the chance of promotion.

The Terras went one better in 2018-2019 by not only winning the Southern League Premier South on the last day of

the season in front of nearly 2700 fans. They also won the overall Champions of the Southern League by defeating

the Premier Central winner Kettering Town on penalties. We now lok forward to playing in the National League South

in 2019-2020.

Sholing Football Club History

The Boatmen have a long but fragmented history, running teams from the Woolston Works as early as 1884, when they

are recorded as being refused permission by the Hants & Dorset FA to introduce fresh players as substitutes at half-time.

In March 1887 they were finalists in the first Portsmouth Challenge Cup, beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth Association Club. The

Club were only beaten twice in 16 games that year (goal tally 72-6) and won the last Hants & Dorset Challenge Cup

before these Associations split.

Woolston Works won the first ever Hampshire Senior Cup Final in 1888, beating Winchester 2-0. There was some

controversy that year concerning Woolstons professional attitude, which was infamously referred to as "Kesson's Boots'.

Andover were beaten in an earlier round by Woolston, in which a Glasgow - based player called J. Kesson played a

prominent part.

Andover protested that Kesson should be disqualified on the grounds of residency - although he had played for Woolston

Works earlier that season, he had since moved back to Glasgow. Woolstons appeal rested on the fact that Kesson had

left a number of clothing items at his lodgings in Woolston, and this should be interpreted as his intention to return. The

Hampshire FA upheld the appeal and allowed Kesson to play.

Re-forming after World War 1 as Thornycrofts (Woolston), they turned professional and were admitted into the Hampshire

County League from 1920/21 to 1925/26. In 1920/21 Thornycrofts reached the FA Cup First Round proper, meeting first

Division Burnley at Fratton Park, and held them to a 0-0 draw, before losing 5-0 in the replay. Burnley were in the middle

of a 30 game unbeaten run and went on to win the first Division Championship.

Thornycrofts Woolston re-formed in 1947 but were only able to keep going until 1952. The Club were re-formed as

Vosper Thornycroft FC in 1960 and joined the Southampton Junior League. After several successful years, Vospers were

promoted to the Hampshire League Division 3 in 1991. The following season they were promoted to Division 2. 1997/98

saw Vospers as Hampshire Division 2 Runners-up and also Hampshire Intermediate Cup Winners.

In 2001/02 Vospers won the Southampton Senior Cup.

2002/03 Vospers were re-named as VT FC (after the parent company), and saw the Club as Runners-up in the

Southampton Senior Cup.

2003/4 saw VT as Hampshire Premier League Champions, Southampton Senior Cup Winners and promotion to the

Sydenhams Wessex League Division 1.

2005/06 VT Reserves won the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's Stadium which gave the club their 3rd victory in 5

years.

2006/07 was a great season for the club. The first team finished in third place and the reserves finished runners-up in

Combination 1 and they also won the Southampton Senior Cup again. The Club's 4th victory in 6 years.

2007/2008 The 1st team were Runners-up to Totton in the Premier League and the Reserves won 3 out of 4 trophies.

They are the Sydenhams (Wessex) Combination 1 League Champions, the Southampton Senior Cup Champions (for the

third consecutive year) and the Sydenhams (Wessex) Combination Cup Champions. They missed out on the Hampshire

Intermediate Cup by losing to Nursling in the semi-final which was the ONLY defeat they suffered all season. An

achievement to be proud of.

2008/09 was equally a very successful season with the first team again Runners-up in the Wessex Premier, this time to

Poole Town. They were Wessex League Cup Winners with a close 2-1 victory over Hamworthy United. Runners-up in the

Hampshire Senior Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Fleet Town. Reserves again won Wessex Combination 1 and the

U18 Youth team made a clean sweep winning four trophies i.e The League, The League Cup, The Hampshire FA Youth

Cup and the Echo Floodlit Cup....what a great season.

2009/10 In our very first season in the Zamaretto Southern League we finished a creditable 4th (play-off position) in the

South & West Division and finished Runners-up in the Red Insure League Cup after going so close and finally losing on

penalties to Cambridge City. The Reserves regained the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's defeating Team Solent

2-0....the sixth time in the last ten years the Club has won it.

The Club changed their name in July 2010 to Sholing FC after the parent company VT Group were no longer in

existence.

2010/11 In only their second season in the Southern League South & West, the 1st team reached an incredible 2nd

place, only 2 points behind AFC Totton. Also Hampshire Senior Cup Finalists at St Marys losing 3-1 to AFC Totton. The

Reserves gained an incredible Double by winning the Wessex Combination League and League Cup in its Final year.

2011/12 For the third season on the trot we once again reached the playoffs only to fall at the first hurdle by a 1-0 away

defeat by Gosport. The reserves copied last year's achievement by winning the League and League Cup in the newly

formed Wyvern League.

2012/13 Despite being bottom of the league just before Christmas, the first team went on an incredible run in the second

half of the season and finished 7th in the Southern League South & West. The Reserves once again won the Wyvern

League, this time going unbeaten the whole season.

The club made the difficult decision to voluntarily drop out of the Southern League South & West (step 4) and into the

Wessex League Premier (step 5). With the focus of the club turning to developing the Silverlake Arena, we didn't want

Page 18: To the Officials, Players & Supporters of - Sholing F.C.sholingfc.co.uk/downloads/programmes/Sholing... · Lowestoft Town 0-1 St Ives Town Poole Town 2-4 Wimborne Town Rushall Olympic

to financially extend ourselves and sink into debt.

2013/14 Back in the Wessex League Premier Division saw the club playing lots of old local rivals and the first team got

off to a storming start to the season and it wasn't to be until February when we were first defeated. However, due to

terrible weather & cup commitments, the club barely played in January & February, meaning a huge backlog of fixtures

in the final weeks of the season. Despite having to play 20 games in 30 days, including NINE successive away games,

Sholing won the League with 104 points and a goal difference of +105.

The Reserves made it a hat-trick of Wyvern League titles in the most thrilling way, scoring a goal in injury time in the last

game of the season, to deny Portchester the title. They also won the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's.

Of course, the FA Vase win will be what most people will remember from this season, the greatest honour in the club's

history. Back in October as we faced Winchester in the 1st round, no one was dreaming of Wembley, but as the rounds

were ticked off, we started to get the feeling that this would be our year. So on the 10th May 2014 at the home of

football, Wembley Stadium, backed by over 3,000 fans, Marvin Mclean scored the only goal and Byron Mason & Dave

Diaper lifted the Vase. In a whirlwind of activity that followed, the team paraded the FA Vase in front of the

Southampton FC fans at St Mary's, were given an official reception by the Mayor of Southampton and appeared on both

local TV stations.

After 15 years in charge of the first team, Dave Diaper handed over the reins to Dave Fear & Mick Marsh, in order to

concentrate on the Ground redevelopment (for which the club has kindly received backing and grants from Sport

England & the FA to build a new clubhouse and 3G pitch). We also said a fond goodbye to players Marc Diaper,

Tyronne Bowers & Lee Bright, who all decided to "retire at the top" after Wembley.

2014/15 Club was granted promotion back into the Southern League South & West division. After 21 matches in charge

Mick Marsh & Dave Fear stepped down from their managerial role leaving Chairman Dave Diaper to step back into the

fray alongside Stuart Hussey. Sholing finished in 17th position having been in that position for 32 weeks. Sholing

reached the semi-final Russell-Cotes cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup losing out 3-0 to Gosport Borough

at Fratton Park. Ground grading issues saw Sholing relegated back to the Wessex League.

The Reserves much like the 1st team had a change of management part way through the season with Martin Tongs

stepping up from U18’s to take charge. The Wyvern title eluded them this season losing out to AFC Portchester and had

to settle for runners up and the two cup competitions saw them runners up again to Petersfield Town in the League Cup

but were successful in the John Stimpson Memorial Shield beating AFC Totton.

2015/16 Following a ground grading issue Sholing returned back to the Sydenhams Wessex League. Sholing welcomed

Darren Burdle into the coaching staff. A remarkable season for Sholing as ten players from within the under 18 ranks

made their first team appearances something that has never happened before. Cup disappointments meant the season

was all about the League and Sholing finished the season Runners Up to Salisbury losing one home League game

which was our first game against Moneyfields the only team to do the League double over us. Dan Mason was pipped

by former Sholing striker Sam Wilson on the final day of the season to deny Dan being the League’s leading scorer.

2016/17: Behind the scenes saw another change in management within the Development side with Iain Calder Steve

Ross & Steve Blackburn taking over the reins. Finishing 4th in the League and reaching S/F of JSMS & ¼ Final of SDFA

Sen Cup. Sholing FC were rocked in Dec 16 with the sudden death of Coach Darren Burdle aged 50. Sholing FC

finished season 3rd

with Dan Mason again being the leading marksman. Sholing completed a cup double winning the

Sydenhams Wessex League Cup then 52 hrs later lifted the SDFA Senior Cup for the 9th time at St Mary’s.

2017/18: The season like last season saw changes in management with Development manager Iain Calder stepping up

to 1st team coach. Steve Blackburn & Curtis Osbourne along with Steve Ross took on the Development role and took

the U18’s to the 1st Round of the FA Youth Cup. Steve & Curtis left the club midseason with Patrick McGonigle and

Steve Terry doubling up their roles with U18’S and Development with Steve Ross. The 1st team finished third in the

Sydenhams Wessex League and failed to defend both trophies losing out in the semi-finals in both competitions. The

Development side finished mid-table with many U18’s stepping up to the Development side. The U18’s won the HCY

League Cup and a number of the U18’S featured in 1st team games.

2018/19: Sholing won the Sydenhams Wessex League title with 8 games remaining of the season & promotion back to

Bet Victor Southern League South a winning double was achieved beating Christchurch to win the Russell-Cotes Cup

for the 1st time in their history. The Reserves finished runners-up in The Wyvern Combination League Premier Division

with the U18’s losing out on penalties to Moneyfields in HCYL League Cup Final.
