“MOTOREX – liquid valuein a green barrel”

Dear customers, partners and employees,

That rolling, rumbling sound is another empty“Swiss-made” barrel being unloaded from atruck onto the slide down to the filling lines inthe production cellar. Labeled with the rightbatch code, it will take just 30 seconds to fillwith 200 liters of liquid value. Sealing thebarrels is the symbolic crowning touch of theentire production process.

It has taken a great deal of thought and hardwork from many MOTOREX employees toget this far. Apprentices, workgroups and theirsupervisors, management and Board of Direc-tors, up to and including the family that ownsthe company, all have made the MOTOREXphilosophy a part of their lives. Exceptionalpersonal dedication runs like a “green” threadthrough the entire organization.

The MOTOREX way doesn’t depend on acasino strategy or on miraculous handoutsfrom the government or some hedge fund.Over 250 people are happy to dedicate a majorpart of their lives to our company. They don’tjust “make money,” they create real value. Andour employees are entitled to equal value inreturn: safe jobs, healthy business growth, proper performance-based pay, dignity andrespect and a substantial contribution to ahappy existence.

That is what we live for and will nevercease to strive for!

CAR LINE goes to South KoreaSouth Korea has long been enjoying strongeconomic growth. This means that a con-stantly increasing number of premium

automobiles from the West is to be seen on the country’s roads. YoungJin Sang-Sa Co.has recently started importing the MOTOREX CAR LINE, filling a genuine market gapwith these high-quality lubricants, because, like everywhere else, top-of-the-range cars inSouth Korea have to use lubricants that meet manufacturers’ specifications.

MOTOREX’s CAR LINE satisfies the requirements and specifi-cations of all current vehicle makes. And, just in passing, theMOTO LINE and BIKE LINE are also a big hit in SouthKorea; in fact MOTOREX’s BIKE LINE is even marketleader. We wish YoungJin Sang-Sa Co. every success.

The new ethylene glycol–based coolant ANTI-FREEZE PROTECT G40 is free of nitrites, phosphates and amines. It provides outstandingprotection against freezing, rust and overheatingfor all modern engines, particularly highlystressed aluminum-block engines. It also preventscorrosion and sediment build-up in the coolingsystem.

ANTIFREEZE PROTECT G40 lasts at leasttwo to four years, depending on manufacturers’specifications. Regular coolant changes are not aluxury – corrosive substances can form as anti-freeze action and corrosion inhibitors graduallylose their effectiveness under high temperatures.ANTIFREEZE PROTECT G40 also meetsthe new VW TL 774-G standard. Current study: biodiesel and motor oil

The use of renewable

components in diesel fuel,

subject ofmuch discussion around

theworld, has a significant effect

on the properties ofmotor oils.

AMOTOREX study reveals some

very interesting results.

Dangerous moleculesDue to their much higher flash points, natu-ral oils and fats such as rapeseed oil, sun-flower oil, castor oil and the like do notburn as well as diesel fuel. If the engine failsto reach the optimum operating tempera-ture, unburned components condense onthe cylinder walls. These residues are car-ried into the motor oil by the piston rings.Depending on the application and enginecondition, MOTOREX chemists havefound concentrations of up to 40% of dan-gerous vegetable molecules (triglycerides)in the lubricant by the end of the prescribedoil change interval!

Why are triglycerides dangerous? Thesemolecules contain several atoms with doublebonds, with two atoms in a tug-of-war forthe same pair of electrons. Double bondsare unstable and easily broken, leading tooxidation and the formation of long-chainmolecules (polymerization). This rapidlyincreases the viscosity of the motor oil, boosting sludge formation and thickeningthe oil. Stray electrons that form insolublechemical compounds are even more haz-ardous, leading to deposits on sensitiveengine parts and clogging filters and lubri-cation holes.

Innovations in diesel engine technologycontinually set new challenges for motor oil.In response to the EURO 4/5 emissionstandards and use of modern exhaust gaspost-treatment systems, MOTOREX hasdeveloped a new additive technology forlowSAPS motor oils low in ash and sulfur.

In recent years the use of unsaturated vege-table oils such as rapeseed oil methylesterhas begun to affect lubricant properties. Many engine producers have responded byrecommending more frequent oil changes.Analyzing samples provided by customers,MOTOREX’s tribology specialists saw aneed for action and started a study.

using MOTOREX FOCUS 4 SAE 10W/40at intervals depending on the results of theanalysis. For several of the vehicles it waspossible to maintain the standard 50,000 kminterval, although a significant concentra-tion of rapeseed oil was found. An oilchange was recommended once this con-centration exceeded 15%. The fleet testfurnished clear confirmation of the resultspreviously obtained in the laboratory.

Exciting findingsThe study made it possible to identify andoutline the different chemical reactionmodels. The effect of the optimum oper-ating temperature was especially note-worthy. Engines that generally ran too cool(idling, numerous cold starts, short dis-tances) saw relatively high levels of contami-nation with the renewable fuels.

It was particularly striking how the extendedfield tests corroborated the experimentallab results. The tests also identified thebest-suited motor oil for our customers. Intesting and practical use, MOTOREXFOCUS 4 SAE 10W/40 is the clear winner.

For any questions about this subject pleasecontact your MOTOREX partner.

Tests in the lab and on the roadHow do engines, biodiesel and lubricantreact in the test tube and on the road?A mixture of diesel and rapeseed oil wasused to find out. Different high-techmotor oil formulas of the same viscosity(SAE 10W/40) were used for each test.

In a lab test at 150 °C with plenty of oxygen(30 l of air per hour), viscosity was found toremain constant for a certain time and thenrise exponentially. Following analysis ofthe results, the particularly well-balancedMOTOREX FOCUS 4 SAE 10W/40 for-mula was chosen for the field test.

484,557 km in the driver’s seatThe fleet test started in April 2006 with thehelp of a trucking company. Five Mercedes-Benz® trucks were driven nearly 500,000kilometers using the following three fuelmixtures:

• diesel fuel with 5% rapeseed oil

• a mixture of 55% rapeseed oiland 45% kerosene

• 100% rapeseed oil

An oil sample was taken every 5,000 km andanalyzed in the lab. The oil was changed

Five vehicles were used for the field test and

kept under constant observation. A technician

takes an oil sample.

With motor oils A and B, viscosity rose sharply in as little as 170 hours. Product C was at the

middle of the pack while D and E proved strong competitors. Formula F, MOTOREX FOCUS 4,

came out on top, with constant viscosity for well over 300 hours.

Off-road: an array of titlesMOTOREX’s strongest performance wasin motocross, where Tyla Rattray andSven Breugelmans won world champion-ship titles in the MX2 and MX3 categoriesrespectively. Tommy Searle picked upthe runner-up title in the MX2 class forthe second time in succession. Samuli Arowon the world championship title in theEnduro 3 class, while Ivan Cervantes(Enduro 1), Juha Salminen (Enduro 2) andMarko Tarkkala (Enduro 3) brought homethree runners-up titles. This is furthertestimony to the impressive performanceof our development partner KTM, be-cause all these riders are members ofthe KTM factory team. What’s just asimpressive is the fact that six of the ninetop riders in the MX2 World Champion

ship class rely on MOTOREX. Supermotoworld champion Bernd Hiemer also lubri-cates his KTM with MOTOREX, whileanother KTM rider, Swiss Mat Rebeaud, triumphed in the Freestyle MX categoryby flying straight to first place in theinternationally prestigious Red Bull X-Fighters series.

These world-class performances are backedup by a clutch of national championshiptitles. Mike Lafferty and Russell Bobbitt –both KTM riders – were placed first andsecond in the US National Enduro series, while Max Nagl of KTM Red Bull becameGerman MX Masters champion. Goodresults were achieved in Switzerland too, with Arnaud Tonus (MX 125 FMS), ChrisMöckli (MX Open SAM), Philippe Dupas-

quier (Supermoto FMS) and Marcel Götz(Supermoto SAM) all becoming nationalchampions with MOTOREX.

Exciting on-road racesMOTOREX put in another strong showingin on-road racing. In the US, Ben Spies andMat Mladin from the Rockstar MakitaSuzuki team dominated the AMA Superbikechampionship, finishing in first and secondplaces in the final rankings. Joshua Brookesof the Hannspree Stiggy Honda teamfinished third in the final rankings of theSupersport World Championship. Competitive autosport classesThere was good news from the autosport classes too.The highlight was undoubtedly Frédéric Vervisch’svictory in the German ATS Formula 3 Cup in aZeller-Dallara. Peter Rikli and his fast Honda Accorddrove their way to a runner-up title in the highlycompetitive ADAC Procar class, while in theGP2 European Championship, Sébastien Buemidemonstrated the extent of his talent with victoriesin Hungary, France and Indonesia.

To the limits – and beyond! To the limits – and beyond! This isMOTOREX’s recipe for success in the sport-ing arena, a more punishing proving groundfor competitors and machinery than any testrig. When victory is decided by mere frac-tions of a second, only absolute perfectionwill do. But MOTOREX’s involvement inracing is about much more than just titles: it’sabout consistently advancing the high-qualityproducts and the benefits they yield for thecustomers.

Prac t ice

SkilledMOTOREX COREX SYNTMany producers of hydrostatically poweredvehicles struggle with high temperatures inthe hydrostats.

MOTOREX recently demonstrated sus-tained thermal optimization of a machine’shydrostatic drive using COREX SYNT HVISO 68. This result is due to the unusuallyflat viscosity-temperature curve of fullysynthetic COREX SYNT HV ISO 68hydraulic fluid. This means that the oil’skinematic viscosity behavior is linear over atemperature range from – 20 °C to 140 °C(see V-T diagram). Bosch-Rexroth®, for ex-ample, prescribes an operating viscosity of16 to 36 mm2/s for optimum efficiency andservice life of axial piston pumps. If anunsuitable oil becomes too thin (< 5 mm2/s)in extreme conditions, it can no longertransmit power, leading to excessive wear orequipment damage.

COREX SYNTH’s high shear stability andgood high-pressure properties allow it tobe used for up to 2,000 hours or longer, depending on the manufacturer’s specifi-cations. Quality additives protect the fluidfrom changes and the system from corro-sion.

A highly interesting if challenging topic. The specialists at MOTOREX technicalcustomer service can provide professionaladvice for all your needs – even in problemcases!

Hydrostatic drives have become widespread, used in many types of construction, utilityand forestry machinery as well as snowcatsand agricultural vehicles. The technologyhas many advantages: a modular design, i.e.flexible connections between the input andoutput drive, and ease of adaptation to spa-tial constraints.

Tubes and hoses serve to connect the motorand pump and can be routed as required. The output drive is also capable of a verywide and continuous range of speeds. Highefficiency and the ability to easily producevery high torque at low RPMs are a mustfor many types of machinery.

Under strong pressure:the hydraulic fluidHydrostatic drives are often the idealmethod of transmitting energy. To functionflawlessly they require the proper hydraulicfluid. Axial piston pumps (main illustration)are used almost exclusively with fluidhydraulics where high pressures are re-quired. These pumps are subject to strongfriction forces, and the hydraulic fluid isforced under high pressure (up to 400 bar!)through bores a few tenths of a millimeterwide. The medium not only transmits theforce but must also lubricate and cool theparts at the same time.

Hydrostatic drives convert an engine’s

mechanical power into hydraulic

force using a pump. This energy is

transmitted by the hydraulic fluid and

transformed back intomechanical

power in hydromotors.

Ariete Holland: a star in the motorcycle zodiac

The motorcycle lifts in MOTOREX colors

are impossible to miss. Ariete has placed

them in many motorcycle workshops.

Frank van Tulder was destined to have apassion for motorcycles right from birth. In1958 his family was the first European im-porter for Honda and other renownedmakes. After a few years in his parents’ busi-ness, van Tulder founded his own company,Ariete Holland. In Italy Ariete is known as aproducer of quality plastic motorcycle parts.A collaboration in this field gave the youngDutch company its name.

Technical expertiseas a successful strategyAriete Holland imports and distributes onlytechnical components for street and off-road motorcycles. The company servessome 800 customers throughout Holland.Ariete is committed to top quality. “It paysoff in the long run,” says Frank van Tulderwith conviction born of many years’ experi-ence – a philosophy in complete agreementwith MOTOREX’s own. Thus Ariete hassuccessfully imported the comprehensiveMOTOREX MOTO LINE to the Nether-lands since 2000.

The entire team’s high level of technical ex-pertise is an unequalled success factor.Three salespeople, all trained motorcyclemechanics, call on customers and furnishadvice. Eschewing high-pressure sales tac-tics, they prefer to rely on qualified adviceand problem-solving. This approach haswon Ariete many customers and secured astrong position for MOTOREX in thefiercely contested lubricant market.

Ariete is Italian for Aries. Typical

characteristics of people born under

this sign of the zodiac are endurance

and perseverance – two qualities

that Frank van Tulder and his team

possess in spades as aMOTO LINE

importer.

Diverse activitiesThe Dutch racing enthusiast first becameaware of MOTOREX through the Swisscompany’s involvement in motocross. Aschairman of the International MX GrandPrix Organizing Committee in Lierop,Frank van Tulder is well acquainted with themotorsport scene. MOTOREX occupies aprominent place at the Lierop Grand Prixalong the racecourse, on TV and in theengines of the various teams.

Ariete also commands a strong presencein motorcycle workshops. Lubricants aredelivered to these shops in large packages, barrels and 1,000-liter containers. AndAriete uses the unmistakable MOTOREX-green hydraulic motorcycle lifts as a promo-tional tool. MOTOREX also has an officialmission in the Netherlands in the cycles ofthe Rijksheer, the Dutch motorcycle troops, where Ariete has delivered convincing proofof Swiss quality by reducing high oil con-sumption.

Continual growthBuoyed by several years of steady growth,Ariete is determined to stick to its strategyof supplying specialist retailers exclusively.Personal commitment, technical know-how,trustworthiness and fairness are the fourpillars of Ariete’s business, says Frank vanTulder. As solid as MOTOREX itself.

creased, raising the number of cycles from10 to 11 per minute. The heat generatedbetween workpiece and tool tip by the high-er cutting pressure and speed was useddeliberately to improve stability at highpressures, an approach made possible bya special formulation in ORTHO NF-X.This delivers substantial benefits duringchip-cutting operations. The 10% increasein performance and marked improvementin surface quality are testimony to thisachievement.

Valuable teamworkwith MOTOREXMOTOREX’s plausible reasoning and solu-tion-driven approach showed the people incharge at Aeschlimann Décolletages thatmachining fluid in 2008 is worthy of height-ened attention. Measurable changes wererecorded after the machine was filled withMOTOREX cutting fluid. Cost account-ing also revealed that the new cutting oiland enhanced productivity were having asurprisingly strong positive effect on prof-itability.

The switch to MOTOREX ORTHOEvery machining parameter was reviewedonce more – without success. The onlyparameter left to modify was the machin-ing fluid. After consulting with theMOTOREX technical service and a visitfrom the regional manager, the companyswitched to ORTHO NF-X universalhigh-performance cutting oil.

The decision to cool the oil and machineto a steady 30 °C had a beneficial effecton the entire production process. Withinthe first eight hours it became clear thatthe machines filled with MOTOREXORTHO NF-X ISO 15 were showingreduced tool wear in various operations.Carlo Secchi watched eagerly for the initialresults of outer taper measurements ofthe first spring plate manufactured withORTHO NF-X.

Cycles increased from 10 to 11The measurement results were highlyencouraging, showing exceptional preci-sion. The surface quality of the case-hard-ened 16MnCrS5 steel part was especiallygood. Next the speed was gradually in-

control. This means that every spindle runsat the same speed during all six operations. Thus the ideal speed for all of the followingoperations had to be established:

Step 1: Centering/planing

Step 2: Roughing/profile cutting

Step 3: Pre-reaming/transversecutting

Step 4: Final reaming/chamfering

Step 5: Pre-cutting for main cutting

Step 6: Main cutting and gripping

Critical final phasefor toolsIt was multispindle team leader CarloSecchi, a 35-year veteran of AeschlimannDécolletages, who brought the need to opti-mize tool service lives to the attention ofMOTOREX. By the end of a productionrun, often during the night shift, tool cut-ting edges would regularly become so badlyworn that dimensional accuracy and espe-cially surface quality would suffer. After

A quantum leapin technology«I was impressed with theresults achieved withMOTOREX ORTHO NF-X.Previously I felt that cuttingoil, apart from dissipating

heat and carrying away swarf, merely coated theworkpiece. Now the performance capabilities ofthese complex formulas can be demonstrateddirectly on the machine tool. I also consider theuniversal nature of ORTHO NF-X, its suitabilityfor all common materials, to be another majoradvantage.»

Riding amotorcycle is one side of the coin; regular care for themachine is the other. That’s why it makes sense to

polish your baby to a high gloss one last time before putting it in storage for the winter.

4. Taking care of the chainClean and lubricate the chain. We recommend the productsMOTOREX CHAIN CLEAN 611 for optimal cleaning andCHAINLUBE for lubrication.

5. Wash the motorcycleSpray the cold motorcycle with MOTO CLEAN 900, let the spraywork on the dirt for a maximum of 5 minutes and then rinse it offwith clean water. This product should not be used in direct sun.

6. ConservationMOTOREX PROTECT & SHINE 645 freshens up and protectsyour machine permanently against corrosion during winter.

7. Remove the batteryStore the fully charged battery in a dry place. The ideal scenario isto charge the battery every 3 to 4 weeks.

8. Relieve strain on the wheelsPlace the machine on its main stand or on an assembly stand torelieve strain on the wheels.

The right MOTOREX MOTO LINE products keep costs withinbounds, helping preserve the value of your and your customers’investment and making it easier to start the bike again in the spring. But the best part of caring for your machine is the feeling of prideyou get when it’s done right!

1. Add gasoline additivePour the contents of the FUEL STABILIZER into the tank. This prevents oxidation and guarantees trouble-free recommission-ing of the vehicle after longer periods in storage. Designed for all2 or 4 stroke engines with or without catalytic converter.

2. Fill the tank right up with gasLet the engine run for a short time after filling the tank.

3. Tyre pressureIncrease the tyre pressures by about 0.3 bar for the periodin storage.

MOTOREX magazine: “Do you maintain thehydraulic components yourself?”Daniel Ruch: “Yes, for the most part. We em-ploy two mechanics. We send an oil sampleto the MOTOREX laboratory after every2,000 or so operating hours. In a short timewe get a thorough report back and knowwhat needs to be done.Compared to conventional hydraulic oils, Ican work about three to four times longerwith OEKOSYNT HEES and regular labo-ratory analysis!”

MOTOREX magazine: “Any final words?”Daniel Ruch: “At first I thought a biofluidwould be inferior to a conventionalhydraulic oil in terms of performance. Inpractice that has not turned out to be thecase. OEKOSYNT HEES is a perfect fitfor our business philosophy, which is basedon sustainability, protecting nature andsuccess.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Thank you very much.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Mr. Ruch, what lines ofbusiness is your company in?”Daniel Ruch: “Since our founding as aforestry business in 1984 we’ve grownsteadily, offering our customers every kindof work in the wood and forestry field. Ourteam is made up of 26 employees and eightapprentices. We work mainly in Vaud andthe neighboring cantons in switzerland.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Why is your companycertified to ISO 9001/14001 and FSC(Forest Stewardship Council) standards?”Daniel Ruch: “We do a lot of work for thepublic sector, where these certifications arean important requirement. They also requireus to use biofluids. We use about 15,000liters of ASPEN fuel, 7,000 liters of chain oiland a few thousand liters of hydraulic fluidevery year. We have always used rapidlybiodegradable hydraulic fluids in our river-bank protection and renaturation work inaccordance with clean-water regulations.”

MOTOREX magazine: “You use OEKOSYNTHEES hydraulic fluid for your vehicle fleet, which is made up of tractors, transportersand harvesters from various manufacturers. How has your experience with it been?”Daniel Ruch: “I’ve been quite pleasantly sur-prised by the hydraulic oil! Did youknow. . .P.S.A. Peugeot Citroën produces over 25,000 diesel engines a day in itsDouvrin and Tréméry engine plants. The customers of the world’s largestdiesel engine producer include not only French automakers, but also BMW,Ford, Volvo and others, who have specific engines including premiumpower plants made there.

The sheer scale of the production buildings is imposing, andproduction takes place in three shifts. Innumerablework centers grind, mill, turn and bore the vari-ous aluminum and cast iron engine components.MOTOREX COOL-X spindle coolant is used inthe high-frequency spindles with great success –there have been no spindle downtimes due to cool-ing problems since the switch to COOL-X.

. . . that the world’s biggest diesel engine producer works with MOTOREX?
