to Yosemite National Park

7th Grade Yosemite Field

Trip 2016

Goals/Focus of the Trip

Inside Boystown Tent Cabins

Cabins are secure and heated.

Four same-sex students share a cabin with 1 double and 2 single beds.

The bathhouse is nearby.

Kids only allowed intheir assigned cabin.

Groups● Cabin and hiking groups

are made with consideration of students’ wishes.

● It may be impossible to please everyone.

● Lists are posted at 3 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving Break.

Hiking Groups

● Approximately 12 students, 1 CM staff, 1 parent, and 1 YI instructor

● Hiking groups are co-ed● Groups are created to encourage students to

get to know people besides their good friends

Sample schedule

● Cafeteria opens for breakfast @7:00 a.m.● Morning meeting @ 8:30 a.m.● In the field from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.● Cafeteria opens for dinner @ 5:30 p.m.● Evening program @ 6:30 or 7:30 p.m.● Quiet time, everyone in rooms @9:00 - 9:30 p.

Supervised Free Time● In morning after breakfast before morning

meeting● After hiking, before dinner● After dinner, before/after evening program● Outside cabins in groups or inside own cabin

Journals

● Will be provided for the students by CM staff● Observations● Daily Reflection

Adult Supervision

Our main goals are to protect the physical safety and emotional well-being of your children.

*There will be 7 CM staff members attending.

Staff will be finalized in the fall.

CMS Faculty

● 7 parent chaperones will be joining us.

● If you are interested in chaperoning, please let Kate Cox know by April 29th.

Parent Chaperones

● All have college degrees● Teaching experience● Extensive safety training● Certified in CPR ● 80-hour medical course for Wilderness First

Responder certification

Yosemite Institute Instructors

● Keep your child home if they are sick.● Fever free for 24-hours ● Yosemite Medical Clinic● Sick children will be quarantined and parents will

need to come and pick up their child

Illness and Injury

● Students can call home at one of the several pay phones in Curry Village.

● We recommend packing a calling card for this purpose.

● Cards and letters can be sent to your student at Curry Village; allow 4 days for delivery.

● No care packages, please.● Cell phones are prohibited.● No news is good news! (Please don’t call the

school office to find out how the trip is going.)

Keeping in Touch…

Some of the Rules

•No cell phones. Period. •“Unplugged” for the week/No Electronics•Cameras are only exception (as long as it is not a phone camera)•Playing cards and board games are fine throughout the week.•No food (beside lunch for Monday)

Gift Shop•This is an educational experience; to keep this in focus, students are not to patronize concessions or gift shops.

•Students should not bring any money on the trip everything is prepaid. If a need arises for them to purchase something at the general store, one of the adults will loan them money.

● Students are held to the same Levels of Behavior as at school

● Yosemite Institute Student Contract (in the packet) to be signed and returned with forms.

● The overriding rule is COMMON SENSE

Behavior

Three Strikes, You’re Home

Expulsion from the program is never taken lightly.

Ample warning will be given by chaperones and Yosemite Institute staff to enable a student to correct his or her behavior.

If a student is unable to correct his or her behavior, or if a serious incident occurs, the teachers may need to expel a student from the program.

We will call the parent/guardian to immediately pick up a student who has been expelled.

The Zero Tolerance Policy

Not supporting the learning and living community, failing to follow directions and guidelines, and making poor judgments that compromise personal safety or the safety of others will not be tolerated.

Medications● Students should not handle their own

medications.● Please complete all the medical forms (to be

distributed in fall shortly before the trip.)● Place your child’s medications along with the

form in a zipper bag, and give it to Kate Cox on the morning of our departure.

FoodTo protect wildlife, students may not have food in their cabins, or purchase food from vending machines or concessions.

This is for the students’ safety.

Curry Village Cafeteria

Breakfast and dinner are all you can eat buffet style.

Ample choices are available!Note any food allergies on registration form. Nature Bridge will ensure there are options for your child to eat.

Yosemite Institute is an Outdoor Program…

We hike rain or shine, heat or cold

Staying hydrated is essential! Water bottles are a key part of a student’s daily needs in Yosemite.

Equipment● Pack according to the equipment list provided in

the fall!● Layers, layers, layers● The weather is unpredictable at this time of year.

● Students need to have EVERYTHING on the packing list. Being prepared will help provide the optimal experience.

● It is not necessary to have new, expensive gear for the trip.

● Let us know if you need to borrow items or have equipment to loan.

Boots

Plan on breaking in new hiking boots before the trip; painful blisters can be avoided with advanced planning.

MUST BE WATERPROOF AND HAVE TRACTION

“Boot Week” November 14-18th

Departure

We arrive in Yosemite in early afternoon. Students must be at Corte Madera by 8:30 a.m.!

Students will help load their luggage (except daypacks, jackets and boots) in the bus before boarding.

Students need to bring a bag lunch with them on Monday

Return to CMS

*We leave Yosemite at about 3:30 p.m. on Friday. *We will eat dinner on the way home.*We arrive home approximately 8:30. *An Parent Link message will be sent, so check your email for an update Fri evening.

● $200 deposit made out to PVSD is due by Friday, April 29th.

● Official Registration forms will be handed out in September and will be due along with the balance of $500.
