The Big Blue Box
We, as Christians, need to show con-cern for our brethren and others. If you know of someone who needs checking on, has problems in their life, etc. write out the information and put it in the Blue Box in the foyer. David Mar-tin is overseeing this good work.
The Big Black Box
Every 3rd Sunday evening, Jim-my will have a Questions & An-swers session. You can submit Biblical questions by placing them in the Big Black Box in the foyer. These questions will be dealt with in the order they are received.
In 1 Samuel 8, we find an aging Samuel and a demanding Israelite nation that wanted a king. Samuel attempted to warn them of what would happen by having a king. Even though Samuel made it clear, the Israelites couldn’t see through their own selfishness to the negative results of their demands. This is often the case with us as well. When we are being completely selfish, no amount of good reason-ing will help us see things differently. In 1 Sam. 8, we find three simple ways to detect a heart of self-ishness. 1. When Excuses Are All We Have. A. The elders presented their request to Samuel and backed it up with several arguments. (1 Sam. 8:5) 1. First, they tell Samuel that he is too ________. 2. Secondly, they tell Samuel that his _________ “do not walk in your ways.” B. As Christians, we often hear similar excuses to __________ breaking from God’s designs or commands. C. The point is that we can always find justification to fulfill our ________ desires. 2. When We Try to be Like the World. A. The elders eventually give the ________ reason for wanting a king. (1 Sam. 8:5) 1. Israel was never designed to be just like the other nations. 2. They were to be _____________, just as Christians are to be distinct today. (1 John 2:15) B. Unfortunately, too many Christians are still trying to look like, sound like, and act like the ____________. 1. The result is that the church looks more like the world instead of the other way around. 2. Eventually, the truth will come out; we justify sinful decisions because we want to be like the world instead of being the called out. (1 Pet. 1:15-16) 3. When We Will Not Use Common Sense. A. The way that Samuel presented this cost to the elders could not be more ____________. (1 Sam. 8:10-20) B. How many times have we made selfish decisions and after some time we regret getting what we wanted? 1. Jesus gave all seven churches of Asia the same warning. (Rev. 2:7) 2. He was telling them what would happen in the future; both positively and negatively. 3. All they had to do was ____________!!
The Heart of Selfishness (1 Samuel 8)
