True heroes are few and far between in the world. However, our Rotary was introduced to one
last last week by Martin Turbidy, when we heard of the amazing and important work of
speaker Dr. Hayley Adams. Dr. Adams is an animal lover to the nth degree. Her work in 13
southern and eastern African countries helping to save endangered species originates right
here on St. Simons Island. She is a one-woman band with her foundation, Silent Heroes,
which reaches deep into the most remote areas of the African continent to save animals like
the white and black rhino, the African elephant, Mountain Gorillas, the Pangolin, and many
others species from poachers, contagious diseases, and extinction. To raise the money, she
writes grants and works with partners who donate gifts in kind like medicines, veterinary
textbooks, and supplies. There is much to do.
As a veterinarian and epidemiologist, her work with the people of African nations and the
animals that flourish there extends into remote village where Poachers are massacring animal
species on a daily basis. The black rhino horn is so valuable to Chinese medicine that horns
are valued higher per ounce than gold or platinum. It’s a tough and dangerous road, and a
frustrating one. There are only about 500,000 elephants remaining from a population of over
5 million less than 80 years ago. Less than 800 Mountain
Gorillas exist on the planet. Human diseases are also
killers. Animals and humans share a lot of DNA.
One of our diseases can mean the extinction of an entire
animal species if unchecked. There is much to do and time
is running-out for some species. Dr. Adams understands
the challenges and realities all too well. Visit her website:
www.thesilentheroes.org for more info.
Thank you, Dr. Adams, for your compelling talk.
