GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and sup-porters from Ringwood Town and the match officials.
As a man who is half South African, it has been a sad week for me with the news of Nelson Mandela’s death.
I have experienced South Africa both during and after Apartheid and when I look back on those memo-ries of past trips, you can’t underestimate the enormity of the work this great man managed to carry out for the good of his country.
Much has been written about his life before he went to prison but what made the legend this man surely is is the fact he did not leave prison and seek revenge, he used his situation to bring understanding, forgive-ness and change to a much troubled country.
There is still much work to do in South Africa but Mandela gave the country the chance to change for the better of everyone.
They say you can take the attributes of great lead-ers and apply them to aspects of your life – and Man-dela certainly is no different to the likes of Churchill.
In terms of this football club, Mandela’s determina-tion to bring change and the opportunity to give every-one opportunities in life would be fairly apt.
He had a vision of bringing together a united South Africa. In our case the vision is to take this club up the non league pyramid in a sustainable fashion.
Everyone should be focussed on that aim and share the determination to succeed. And like Mande-la’s plans, anyone is welcome to join us – whether as a player or supporter – so long as they share our vision and want to passionately become a part of that.

MANAGER’S notes
A WARM welcome to Ringwood Town for our return to league action today.
Our visitors have had a mixed season so far but they can not be under esti-mated as they have a couple of proven goalscorers in Bellot and Totsyk.
Ringwood have also had a recent manager change so I would like to wish players, man-agement and staff of Ringwood all the very best for the remainder of the season – but obviously not against us today!
We had an-other excellent result against Wessex Pre-mier opponents Brockenhurst on Wednesday evening in the Hampshire Senior Cup competition.
The game was an-other decent advert for the Wessex League and we have pro-gressed to the quarter finals for the first time in our history.
It was great to be able to freshen up the starting line-up and the
lads were magnifcent in their endeavour. For the second time this season I want
to publicly say well done to the squad for their latest achievement.
As always we will not under estimate our visitors today as we look to continue with our push for a promotion place.
The lead up to Christmas will see some further tests of our own cre-
dentials, with away matches at US Portsmouth and the top-of-the-table clash with the rejuvenated Andover Town, which will be played as the first fixture at the renovated Portway Stadium.
In closing I am happy to announce further strength-ening to the squad with the additions of Sean Wain (from Moneyfields) and both Ben
Buckland and Joe Briggs (from Pagham).
We wish the new lads all the best and we
all continue to feel confident that
the depth and quality of our club at this time will see us through to a suc-cessful season.
All the best.
Sus
For the second time this season I want to thank the squad for their achievement

RAMS news round-up
Help your club to win The News’ sports awardsPETERSFIELD Town has been shortlisted for The News’ Sports Awards 2013 – and you can help your club to win up to three titles.
The south’s biggest newspaper runs their prestigious awards every year to “recognise the achievements of our local sporting heroes, from performers and managers, to supporters and volunteers – the real stars of sport.”
The winners of each category are de-cided by a public vote by readers of The News so our candidates for the awards need your support if they are going to col-lect one of the main prizes at February’s awards night.
The first team is in the running for Best One-Off Performance for their stunning victory over Wessex League champions Blackfield and Langley in the FA Cup back in August.
First team manager Ian Saunders is in the running for the Coach of the Year prize, for the impact he has already had on the club since joining in the pre-season of 2012.
Three of the club’s longest serving volunteers, who between them have put in almost a century of work at Love Lane, are in the running for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Secretary Mark Nicoll, groundsman
John Martin and gateman Bill Underwood have all been put forward for this cat-egory.
Voting for the awards remains open until midnight on January 19, 2014.
You can vote using voting forms which are published regularly in The News or you can register votes via text message.
To vote by text you start your message pen sports, then the two digit code along-side the names below, plus your name, house number and postcode to 61500.
Total characters in message must not exceed 155 characters. Example mes-sage: pen sports 22 Graeme Moir 56 PO16 8BX.
Each text vote costs £1 plus your standard network charge. Votes cast after the deadline of midnight on January 19, 2014, will not be counted but you will still be charged for them.
Here are the codes you need to vote for our award nominees:
22 - Ian Saunders69 - First team v Blackfield in FA Cup59 - Bill Underwood62 - Mark Nicoll64 - John MartinRemember – the more votes you can
all cast throughout the club, the more chance we have of picking up some awards, so get voting!

TODAY’S visitors
FEW FOOTBALL clubs in Hampshire can boast that they are over 130 years old, but an ancient copy of the old Ringwood Almanac reveals that Ringwood Town Football Club was formed in 1879.
The club is first mentioned in county records in 1886 when it used the title of Ringwood Hornets.
The team was disbanded during the 1914-18 war and was re-established in 1918 as Ringwood Comrades, consisting mainly of service-men returning from the battlefields.
In 1936 the club reverted to the name of Ringwood Town Football Club but was disbanded again during the Second World War.
In 1946 the club was listed as Ring-wood and Welwor-thy Football Club but soon reverted back to the title of Ringwood Town and has played under that name ever since.
The club played at Carvers Playing Fields during the 1950s and 1960s but an ambitious club committee, encouraged by Ringwood Town Council, laid the foundations for the club to move to the present Long Lane ground.
Successive committees have con-tinued to improve the facilities at the ground, such that the club was able to join the Wessex League in 2004.
Ringwood Town have won the Bour-nemouth Senior Cup on four occasions and were runners-up a further four times.
In 1980 the club recorded its most memorable achievement when Southern League opponents were defeated to win the Russell Cotes Cup.
Since then the club was promoted to Hampshire League Division One only to be relegated the following season.
The club has had notable success in the Bournemouth Leagues and in the Bournemouth FA Page Croft Cup.
During 2003-04 season the first team reached the final of the Hampshire League Floodlit Cup while the reserve team won the Hampshire League Combina-tion 2 Division.
In 2005-06 the first team finished ninth, with the reserve team fifth in their respective division.
The re-formed Sunday team won Bournemouth FA Divi-sion 3 with an unbeaten league record, conceding only nine goals in 22 matches.
This improvement was not maintained in 2006-07, with the club finishing next to bottom of the Wessex League Premier Division.
They took their place in Wessex Divi-sion 1 in 2007-08 season, where they have remained since.
Plenty of name changes but always came back to Town...

RETRO rams
EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.
This week we go back to August 24, 1983, to a report on a pre-season friendly between Petersfield United and Ports-mouth at Love Lane.
There were plenty of star names in the visiting Pompey team that night – Alan Ball, Paul Hardyman, Dave Thomas, Kevin Ball and one player named in the Post as Stephen Claridge – which we presume was Steve Claridge as he was starting out on his career at that time.
Pompey won the game 3-0 and the
Post reported that the match drew a large crowd to Love Lane.
Part of the match report said: “Throughout the match, the effortless way in which Alan Ball controlled the Pompey midfield and engineered the game was a joy to watch.”
Bearing in mind this was 17 years af-ter Ball had helped England lift the World Cup in 1966, it showed just how good a player he was – and another star name to grace the Love Lane turf.
Petersfield put in a fast and frenzied performance but their lack of finishing power proved crucial against the profes-sionals in the end.
Fareham Town 1 Petersfield Town 5
YOU CAN add Fareham’s name to the list of Totton and Eling, Blackfield and Langley, Fawley and Brockenhurst.
Petersfield grabbed another Wessex Premier Division scalp with an impressive display in the Portsmouth Senior Cup at Cams Alders.
Fareham had no answer to Peters-field’s flowing football as the Rams swept them aside and set up a home tie against AFC Portchester in the next round of the competition.
The Rams took the lead after only five minutes. Fareham keeper Luke Douglas dropped a corner and Robbie Tambling shot home from close range.
Tambling got his second on 26 min-utes when he picked up the ball, took it into the penalty area and then fired a shot low past Douglas.
The third came three minutes before half time when good play in midfield eventually saw the ball crossed into the box and Ryan Coker was left unmarked to head home on his first team debut.
Tambling completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes when he latched on to a ball in behind the home defence.
He ran on before his low shot squeezed under the dive of Douglas and rolled into goal off the post.
Midway through the half, Rams’ keeper Matt Shortt, who had had a quiet night up until that point, had to be alert to push aside a shot.
Fareham pulled a goal back after 79 minutes when a cross found Josh Cripps at the far post and he fired his shot back across goal and past Shortt.
Coker got his second on 82 minutes
when Mike Asare’s ball from the left found him and he fired past Douglas.
Petersfield Town 2 Hayling United 0
IT WASN’T pretty but Petersfield got the all-important three points they needed from this league encounter at Love Lane.
In truth, bottom of the division Hay-ling posed little threat to the home side throughout this match but the Rams took their time to find their scoring boots.
Once the deadlock was broken in the second half, Ian Saunders’ side cruised to victory and closed the gap on Wessex Division 1 leaders Andover Town – who were without a game – to four points.
The visitors had their keeper, Jona-than Fry, to thank for keeping the score down with a string of good saves.
In the first half he tipped over Robbie Tambling’s hooked shot and smothered Luke Heard’s close range effort. Joe Richardson also hit the outside of the post with one shot.
At the start of the second half Fry pushed aside Andy Todd’s goalbound effort before Petersfield finally made the breakthrough after 55 minutes.
Richardson curled his free kick into the box and Heard was left unmarked to head home.
The second goal came on 77 minutes after Hayling gave away a free kick in midfield. Richardson then curled his shot past Fry and into the net from 30 yards.
Hayling’s day was made worse by the sending off of Brad Silvester.
With four minutes remaining, Zac Wil-lis’ effort was only partially cleared and Fry punched Mike Asare’s follow-up effort off the line.
