Forme r prisoner Sean McMona- gle, a Sinn Fein member who’s one of the city’s best- known commu- nity workers, has accused those in-  volved of trying to foment division among republicans.  A group of masked men attacked his car with hammers outside his home on Rinmo re Drive shortl y before midnight on Wednesday. The windscreen, headlights, and other windows were broken in the attac k and the bonnet of the car  was also damaged. Mr McMonagle, who chaired last Sunday’s Volunteer s’ Commemo- rat ionat theCity Cemetery , sai d he beli eves he was targeted because of his political views and because he has spoken out against RAAD. “I don’t want to get into specu- latio n about which group was in-  volved because it would force me to use the term ‘republica n’ and these groups are anything but re- publican,” he said. “I have made my views well - known in terms of what I think of these groups and this attack has not changed that. It has strength- ened it,” he added. Mr McMonagle also accused thos e behind the attack of trying to turn Creggan into a ghett o. “I am appe aling to the community , parti cularly republicans - includ- ing those who have become disaf- fected - to ask thems elves what the people who attacke d my car have to offer. People need to make a stand. We need to move forward and not allow these people to turn theareaback int o a ghetto, notjust in appearance but also dictated to by fear like it was when I grew up under the British army and RUC. “The people who are responsible for this attack, and other attacks, are loo king to create confusion and conict within the community, particularly within the republican famil y. We will not allow that to happen,” he said. The attack has been condemned by poli tical and community lead- ers in Creggan. A demonstration to show solidarity with Mr McMona- gle was to be held in Rinmore last night. Fo yle Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney described the attack as “cowardly and sickening.” “I defy these peo ple that if they have a legitimate or otherwise grievance against Sean McMonagle or any- one else in the community to come out from behind their masks and skulking in the dark and air these grievances face- to-face. Tensions are rising in Cregganafter an attack by masked men- thought to be members of Re-publican Action Against Drugs- on the car of a leading Derryrepublican.

Former prisoner Sean McMona-gle, a Sinn Fein member who’s oneof the city’s best-known commu-

nity workers, has accused those in- volved of trying to foment divisionamong republicans.

A group of masked men attackedhis car with hammers outside hishome on Rinmore Drive shortlybefore midnight on Wednesday.

The windscreen, headlights, andother windows were broken in theattack and the bonnet of the car was also damaged.
