    LOVE.LIFE

    Economics of loveBy Kate Pedroso@inquirerdotnet

W HAT is risk?”my financialmanagementprofessor asked our classone night. I came pre-pared with the textbook answer: “Risk is thechance that some unfa- vorable event will hap-pen.” Such a cold andclinical definition for sucha passionate concept. What was on the tip of my tongue was JeanetteWinterson’s quote aboutit: “What you risk revealswhat you value.”

Our professor, a Harvard-trained bank executive, was afan of linking economics tolove. His way of translating con-cepts into “layman’s terms” of-ten involved relationship exam-ples. “What is sunk cost?” Thetextbook says these are “costsincurred in the past and cannotbe recovered in the future.”This is related to a conceptcalled incremental costs, whichare costs relevant to a decision.

“Sunk costs are not relevantto decisions about the future,”he explained. “It’s like when you’re about to get married anddon’t feel quite right about it. You don’t think about the past10 years you spent with thatperson in making that decision. It’s a sunk cost.”

I wanted to say: “But I would.” I’ll probably make badfinancial decisions someday, be-cause I’m sentimental. But I dosee the wisdom in that—it’s thesort of thing you tell your friends who are trying to break up withtheir partners of x-and-x yearsafter realizing that the relation-ship had nowhere else to go.

“Sunk cost na lahat ’yon,” you could say. “Let’s move on tothe next investment. Time isgold.” The hardest concept tofight is “sayang naman.”

“But what is the cost of hold-

ing on?” you could say. “What isthe cost of letting all these oth-er opportunities pass?” Thoughreally, can anybody quantify thecost of letting go? It seems thatthe only way to combat blind-ness caused by passion andgrief is to be horribly cold andclinical about it.

“Easy to say when you’re notthe one whose heart is beingshred to pieces,” I’ve been told.

“Love is a risk,” I’ve beentold.

    HHHHHI’m not a risk-taker; we’re all

naturally risk-averse, or so thedefault economic assumptiongoes. But when you’re a girl who likes girls, everything is arisk. It all depends on who youtake it with—“risk all, no re-grets,” I’ve been told.

It all sounded so romantic, tothrow caution to the wind. It washow I found myself coming outto a girl I liked, one rainy July evening. We were good friends,

and I fell in love with the possi-bility of “us.” I was 18 and care-less and, looking back, it really was the worst thing we couldhave done to our friendship.

“I took a gamble,” wasn’tthat what former PresidentJoseph Estrada said when he was convicted? “I took a gam-ble, and I lost.”

    HHHHH

When was the last time youtook a gamble? When I was 22,I began an intense friendship

with a girl. She was a friend of a friend—you know how itgoes. She was lovely, but at thetime I was still going in circles with that other girl. I was hold-ing on, and at some point I re-alized it was costing me allthese other opportunities.

Confronted with too many choices, I did what seemed tobe the easiest: I followed my heart. It’s the riskiest thing to doin any situation, because it ofteninvolves wearing it on your

sleeve. I knew what was on theline: My four-year “thing” withsomeone familiar, who at thetime was already in a relation-ship with someone else; and thisbudding friendship with some-one who could be something.

“High risk, high gains,” I’vebeen told. So, sitting there inthe new girl’s room with my heart in my hand, I tossed acoin in my head.

“Heads I kiss her. Tails I kissher.”

I know that’s not how cointosses work, but it’s now eight years later, and these days I findthat I no longer have to toss acoin.

    The gamble has finally paidoff.

    HHHHH

“What is risk?” My profes-sor’s definition was: “Risk is thepossibility of a loss. It exists be-cause we live in an uncertain world.” I wrote that down witha smile on my face, thinking

about how real this definitionfeels, how down-to-earth. Fi-nance and economics have al- ways struck me as somethingbeyond my reach; as matters forthe extremely moneyed (whichI certainly am not). As a sub- ject, we have always had thislong-standing love-hate rela-tionship—I try to love it; ithates me. That moment wasone of those rare ones when ev-erything seemed to make sense.

“Risk is uncertainty that mat-ters,” he said. I wrote that onedown, too.

    S H OWB U Z Z WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 2015 5ROMEL M. LALATA, Editor

After hosting several shows,he’s back as an actor in ABS-CBN’s Bridges of Love. I wish he would have another talk showsoon, though. His wit and can-dor are unmatched in thegabfest scene. But either as ahost or an actor, Edu is alwayssuch a delight to watch.

Edu… wow! What is the state of your

love life now?My lawyers have advised me

    not to answer that question.(Chuckles).

In what ways are your sonLuis and Angel Locsin well-suited for one another?

I have no idea. Only Luis and Angel know that. Parents canonly hope for the best for theirchildren.

What do you wish youcould be good at?

I wish I had pursued my dream to become a goodlawyer.

    What has fame taught you?

With fame comes great re-sponsibility. Fame, when usedproperly, can bring about posi-tive change.

What do you know now that you wish you had knownearlier?

That to be with someone for-ever … it’s best to take Edsa!

What made you decide toreturn to ABS-CBN?

My role as Lorenzo in Bridgesof Love is one worth dying for!Plus the chance to work again with friends and the challengeto share the screen with artists Ihaven’t worked with yet.

Which do you enjoy more, hosting or acting?

They are both demanding. Inhosting, you have to be at thetop of your game. If it’s a liveshow, there’s no take two. So you need to be prepared. Youalso have to develop a relation-ship with your audience. In act-ing, the challenge is working with other elements, including

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

E DU Manzano should give a crashcourse on how to be charming with-out trying too hard. There’s some-thing about Doods that draws people in.I’ve always liked his style. I enjoy our ani-

mated text exchanges in his dialect, Hiligaynon.

the other artists, to create thedesired effect required by thedirector.

Are you better as a host or asan actor?

I always try to be the best Ican be in any given situation.

What don’t people know about you?

I’m just a sweet, sensitive lit-tle boy living in the body of a59-year-old man.
