ROUND2 ~
TAYPORT v DOWNFIELD
This afternoon we welcome Downfield to the Canniepairt for the first time since June 2004. Back in our early Junior days, meetings ofTayport and Downfield were occasions to savour and captured the imagination of the local Junior fans. The reason being that Downfield were top dogs on Tayside at that time and Tayport FC was the emerging force in the game. Adding spice to these occasions was the fact that manager Dave Baikie had joined Port from Downfield, having served his coaching apprenticeship there under the Grier brothers. A nwnber of players with Downfield connections e.g. Mark Spalding, Kevin Thoms, Jimmy Hunter and Andy Sommerville also found their way across the water to become part of a club which was ultimately to usher Scottish Junior Football into a new era. Despite being backed by a then vibrant social club in Balgowan Avenue, Downfield's chal-lenge to the newcomers couldn't be sustained and, as a new century beckoned, the Spiders slipped back into mid table mediocrity and further, eventually dropping out of the local game's upper echelon into Tayside Division One in 2004. It was to be the springboard for a revival, however, and following a decade with little to cheer, the Division One Championship and promotion to the Tayside Premier Division was achieved last season. Such was the Downfield committee's ambition to get back amongst the leading lights, that a poor start to this campaign saw the title winning management t~am re-lieved of their positions. Dave Baikie, at the time without a post, was approached to take over the Spiders' reins but, after giving the matter serious consideration, declined the invitation. ·
The committee then turned to another experienced campaigner, John Clenaghan, formerly of Forfar West End, to take over team affairs. Clenaghan has steadied the ship, of that there's no doubt, and John will see today's game as a measure of both how far he has taken his new charges and where he needs to strengthen his side to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Tayport have stuttered a bit over the holidays and until that second half v Violet the other day, one wondered from where the next goal was coming. With a Scottish tie v Renfrew looming next week, Tayport will want to get things together and today's local cup tie will provide a strong examination.
Out of the Tayport squad goes John Knox who has been transferred to St Andrews United. Ronnie Kenneth although cup-tied in the Scottish, is available for today's game and could feature from the start. A big blow to Port is the absence through injury of Roberto Morris but this is tempered by the return to training after injury of Scott Peters. A measure of Downfield's topsy turvy times is the fact that, of today's squad, only keeper Neil McConnachie, Andy Payne, Greg McMaster and Aaron Thomson survive from the squad that played here 18 months ago.
The game goes straight to penalty kick if the game finishes level, as it did when the sides last met here on league business in 2002.

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome and a happy new year to both sets of supporters.
Today we face a tricky tie against Downfield in the Chal-lenge Cup. It's il game which the bookies have made us favourites to win, but as we all know, these games, against opponents that have nothing to lose, can turn out to be very difficult, so we will have to approach the match very professionally, get the job done, and be in the hat for the next round.
During the break we have had a few low key friendlies, the whole purpose, of which was to keep us ticking over in the festive period. Although not at our best and short of bodies we cannot make excuses for the lacklustre performances against Arbroath FC and Lochee Harp in particular, in which we ~ave a_way _bad goals with some poor defending. Another two were conceded against Violet ear-lier this week, but hopefully we have sorted out these problems for today's match and, of course, next week's Scottish Cup tie against Renfrew. ·
Today's encounter with Downfield should be ideal preparation for next week, because we expect a full blooded cup tie, with both sides hoping to start off 2006 with a victory. I know that if we play to our potential, then we have a great chance of winning, but if we take our opponents lightly, the~ there is al-ways the chance they can turn us over. " Downfield seek to recapture the glory days"
says
Competitive action resumes this weekend, with the visit ofDownfield, but there have been a couple of festive friendlies to sustain our interest over the Christmas pe-riod. On Tuesday, Violet provided the opposition and, after a goalless first half, the fans were treated to some excellent second half strikes.
Virtually the whole squad got a run-out, with several half-time changes actually ignit-ing the game. Steven Stewart thumped in the opener, not long after Martin Grant had been denied when clean-through on the 'keeper. The Pansies then fashioned an equal-iser, before Allan Ramsay reacted quickly to net a cracker, from the edge of the area, following a comer kick.
Again, the visitors levelled, with an equally well-taken effort, but, late on Bryan Du-ell's header sealed a 3-2 win.
The previous Tuesday, Brian Craik scored the only goal of the match (a familiar story) but, unfortunately, he was wearing the colours ofLochee Harp, who deserved their win against a depleted Tayport side.
Harp had also been the opponents for the final official fixture of 2006, with 'Port re-cording a fine four-goal victory, in the Findlay Cup. Four players were on the score sheet, back on the 17th December . Barry McNaughton curled home the first, Lloyd Young pounced to net number two, while, in the second half, Gus Malone and Martin Grant weighed in with a goal apiece, as Tayport bounced back from the Bo'ness ex-perience.
So, from Harp to Downfield, two clubs who could lay claim to being Tayside's 'team of the eighties', both having won a few league championships during that period . For the Spiders, the glory days continued into the next decade, but the emergence of a new club thwarted their ambitions . As a result, today's Challenge Cup tie will, inevitably, be keenly contested .

SNIFFING ABOUT THE WITH
THE SNOUT Locbee United's appointment of Ray McKinnon as manager to succeed Eddie Wolecki came as something of a surprise , but there's no denying his pedigree in the game, having worked under such soccer luminaries as Jim Maclean and Brian Clough. Snout under -stands the other names in the frame were Broughty's Kenny Cameron and Forfar West End 's Jim Finlayson.
It's understood that Dave Baikie is set to make several signings for Bo'ness during this month 's transfer window. Unhappy with the depth of his squad and hit by injuries , be could supplement bis pool by as many as seven new faces.
Snout was speaking to a Junior punter who was less than impressed when taking in the Brechin City v Clyde Bell's League game on Boxing Day. Not so much the £12 admis-sion, but the pre-match teams announcement. The announcer rattled through a list of names at a rate of knots but failed to give any numbers to accompany the names. With no names on the shirts, it amounted to pretty poor PR. According to our man.
In January 2000 Mark Corcoran was beading towards a league championship badge as a member of a Tayport side beading towards the Tayside title. Six years on, Mark looks like be is on bis way to a Bell's Championship medal as a member of a St Mirren side fast beading for the SPL. The former Tayport winger bit two crucial goals for the Bud-dies over the festive period.
Moves and rumours of moves. Arniston's joint manager, ex-Tayport FC Ben Honey-man was set to sign for Glenrotbes according to a midweek report. North End's Kenny Laing is to return to Locbee United. Hill of Beath striker Andy Roberts is heading to Bo'ness • Craig Reynolds bas moved from Rosytb Ree to Hill of Beath. Rosytb have placed Darren Francis and ex- Linlitbgow keeper Greg Logan on the transfer list. Both were signings this season by former manager Billy Spence.
With the Links Park shake-up under way, Gable Endies ' manager Eddie Wolecki bas been looking at Tayport players, amongst others, as replacements for those be bas been shipping out.
Dave Baikie is amongst the favourites for the vacant Alloa Athletic managerial post and also mentioned as a front runner is former Forfar boss Brian Fairley . Tayport boss Keith Burgess , it is understood, knocked back a tentative approach.

It 's a different concept with a hot buffet and is a lot less for-mal than a Sportsman's Dinner. No auctions , just an evening with renowned speaker John Gahagan.
John Gahagan was born in Glasgow and freely admits that life never really began until he signed for Motherwell FC in 1979 following short spells at Clydebank F.C. and ShettlestonJuniors
John spent eleven years with Motherwell FC - the club he had supported as a boy. He played under such famous men as Ally McLeod, Davie Hay, Jock Wallace and Tommy McLean, winning two first division championship medals in 1981 and 1985. A~er a glorious testimonial season in 1990, John moved to Greenock Morton where he spent 4 years under his favourite manager, Alan McGraw before retiring in 1994 .
John is a fully qualified S.F.A. coach holding an 'A' Diploma and spent three very successful years as the S.F.A. Football Development Officer in Clackmannansh ire. John's tales of woe about life in and out of football have whipped up a comical storm at every conceivable venue including the Scott ish Sports ' Writers and Scottish Professional Footballers Associa-t ion Player of the Year Awards where he received standing ovations on both occasions. John has won MSN Speaker Trophies 2001, Glasgow; 2003 Manchester and 2003 Leeds.
Don't miss it!
