-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐TODAYSART IS A FESTIVAL CONCEPT THAT REVOLVES AROUND THE PRESEN-‐TATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADVENTUROUS CONTEMPORARY VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS IN A VARIETY OF URBAN SETTINGS. THE FESTIVAL WAS

FIRST HELD IN 2005 IN THE HAGUE, AND HAS SINCE PROVIDED A SIGNIFICANT ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE CITY’S CULTURAL VIBRANCY. IN 2011, INTERNA-‐TIONAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE GENERATOR FOUNDATION AND CIMAT-‐ICS WILL EXTEND THIS CONTRIBUTION TO BELGIUM, THROUGH THE INITIATION

OF TODAYSART BRUSSELS, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS TODAYSART.BE.

IN BRUSSELS, TODAYSART.BE WILL TAKE OVER THE EUROSTATION / MIDI-‐ZUID STATION -‐ ONE OF THE CITY’S EMBLEMATIC SITES -‐ FROM 29 SEPTEMBER TO

1 OCTOBER, PRECISELY ONE WEEK AFTER THE TODAYSART EDITION IN THE HAGUE. A 60 EURO COMBI-‐TICKET AND A TRAIN RIDE OR ROAD TRIP

OF BARELY MORE THAN AN HOUR ALLOWS YOU TO VISIT BOTH FESTIVALS!

-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐HIROAKI UMEDA COMES TO TODAYSART.BE TO PRESENT HIS MODERN DANCE PIECE HOLISTIC STRATA. RECEIVING RAVING REVIEWS ONLINE AND IN NEWS-‐

PAPERS SUCH AS THE GUARDIAN AND LE MONDE, HOLISTIC STRATA SEES UMEDA CONVERTING HIS OWN MUSCLE MOVEMENTS INTO COMPUTER DATA IN REAL TIME, WHICH ENABLES HIM TO MANIPULATE THE LIGHT FROM FOUR

WITH ANTIVJ’S VISUAL GENIUS SIMON GEILFUS IS A MARVELOUS MERGING OF TALENTS; WITH LARGE, SEMI-‐TRANSPARENT SCREENS, THEY CREATE

A FULLY IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH MICROSCOPIC PARTICLES, GEO-‐METRIC GRIDS AND ORGANIC ELEMENTS ARE MAPPED IN A WONDROUS 3D PER-‐SPECTIVE TO THE SOUND OF AMBIENT AND DRONING ELECTRONICA. A TRULY

PSYCHEDELIC EXPERIENCE THAT WILL BE A FEAST FOR YOUR EYES AND EARS.

MARTIN MESSIER [CA/QC] -‐ SEWING MACHINE ORCHESTRA-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

SEWING MACHINE ORCHESTRA BY MARTIN MESSIER IS JUST THAT; IT IS A MUSICAL PERFORMANCE ENTIRELY ORCHESTRATED WITH ACOUSTIC SOUNDS

PRODUCED BY 1940’S SEWING MACHINES. THE EFFECT OF SEEING THESE CLASSIC INDUSTRIAL MACHINES IN A CONTEMPORARY ENVIRONMENT, WORK-‐ING TOGETHER TO PRODUCE STRUCTURED SOUND, IS STRANGELY FANTASTIC.

EUPHORIE (1024) [FR] -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

1024 ARCHITECTURE WAS CREATED BY PIERRE SCHNEIDER AND FRANCOIS WUNSCHEL, CO-‐FOUNDERS OF THE EXYZT COLLECTIVE. THE LABEL FOCUSES ON THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN BODY, SPACE, TECHNOLOGY, ART AND ARCHI-‐TECTURE. ‘EUPHORIE’ WAS BORN FROM THE DESIRE TO DEVELOP A PROJECT

BASED ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN VIDEO, SOUND, MOVEMENT AND ACCIDENTS OF LIFE AS A 40-‐MINUTE THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE POWERED BY LO-‐TECH TOOLS. THE RESULT IS AN AMAZING AUDIOVISUAL EXPERIENCE

THAT QUESTIONS THE SENSES.

JUSTICE YELDHAM [AU] -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

WHAT’S BEEN DESCRIBED AS “A TRUMPET PLAYER TRAPPED IN A TWO-‐DIMEN-‐SIONAL UNIVERSE” IS IN FACT THE UNIQUE AUDIO WORK OF JUSTICE YELDHAM (THE LATEST ALTER-‐EGO OF LUCAS ABELA), A MAVERICK MUSICIAN WITH AN UNHEALTHY OBSESSION FOR SHEETS OF BROKEN GLASS. BY PRESSING HIS FACE AND LIPS AGAINST THE GLASS WHILST EMPLOYING VARIOUS VOCAL TECHNIQUES RANGING FROM THROAT SINGING TO RASPBERRIES, HE TURNS HOUSEHOLD WINDOWS INTO CRUDE MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. THIS RESULTS

IN A WIDE VARIETY OF CACOPHONOUS NOISES THAT ARE STRANGELY CONTROLLED AND ODDLY MUSICAL.

JOCHEN DEHN [FR/DE] -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

JOCHEN DEHN PRACTICE AS A PERFORMER TAKES VARIOUS FORMS INCLUDING THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES IN APARTMENTS, MUD WRESTLING, WORKS FOR

AN ACTRESS AND AN ELEPHANT, GAMES WITH THE DETECTORS IN THE LOUVRE AND A HOMAGE TO THE INVENTION OF VELCRO. BY ENGAGING THE BODY AND

THE SPACE AROUND IT, JOCHEN DEHN EXPANDS UPON FORMS AND STRATEGIES THAT TEND TO REVEAL CONTACT ZONES AND THUS REDUCE THE DISTANCE

THAT SEPARATES THE BODY FROM ITS POSSIBLE COLLISIONS.

-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐LUCAS ABELA (AKA JUSTICE YELDHAM) WILL BRING HIS VINYL RALLY TO

TODAYSART. THE INSTALLATION IS A RACE TRACK MADE FROM OVER 6.000 VINYL RECORDS. THE PUBLIC CAN CONTROL RACING CARS THAT HAVE A STYLI

(RECORD NEEDLE) ATTACHED TO THEM, THUS PICKING UP SOUND FROM THE RECORDS AS THEY RACE. WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR VINYL RECORDS, SO IF YOU HAVE UNWANTED RECORDS LYING AROUND, PLEASE DROP THEM OFF

ANDREAS MUXEL [AT/DE] & MARTIN HESSELMEIER [DE] -‐ CAPACITIVE BODY-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

NOISE POLLUTION IS PRODUCED 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK. WE CAN CLOSE OUR EYES, BUT OUR EARS ARE ALWAYS OPEN. UNNATURAL SOUND DIS-‐RUPTS THE ACTIVITY AND BALANCE OF HUMAN OR ANIMAL LIFE. ‘CAPACITIVE BODY’ IS A MODULAR LIGHT SYSTEM THAT REACTS TO THE SOUND OF URBAN SPACES. IT CONSISTS OF MODULES EQUIPPED WITH SENSORS, ELECTROLUMI-‐NESCENT WIRES AND A MICROCONTROLLER. SENSORS CAPTURE ARCHITEC-‐

TURAL SOLIDS’ VIBRATIONS TRIGGERED BY SURROUNDING AMBIENT NOISE AND CONTROL THE LIGHT WIRES TENSED TO A SPATIAL NET STRUCTURE. CHANGES

IN VIBRATIONS TRANSLATE INTO LIGHT FLASHES CREATING A DYNAMIC NERVOUS LIGHT SYSTEM. SILENCE IS GONE FROM TODAY’S URBAN SPACES.

LAB[AU] + DAVID LETELLIER [BE / FR] -‐ TESSEL-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

TESSEL IS A KINETIC INSTALLATION INVESTIGATING THE PERCEPTION OF SOUND AND SPACE. TESSEL IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN FRENCH COMPOS-‐ER AND ARTIST DAVID LETELLIER, AND LAB[AU], A BELGIAN ELECTRONIC ARTS STUDIO. THE INSTALLATION CONSISTS OF A SUSPENDED AND ARTICULATED TO-‐POGRAPHY OF MIRRORS, SOME OF THEM FITTED WITH MOTORS AND EQUIPPED WITH AUDIO TRANSDUCERS, TRANSFORMING THE SURFACE INTO A DYNAMIC SONIC SPACE. A DIALOGUE BETWEEN SPACE AND SOUND IS CREATED AS THE

SURFACE SLOWLY MODIFIES ITS SHAPE, OUR PERCEPTION OF IT ALTERED THROUGH CONTINUOUSLY CHANGING LIGHT AND SOUND REFLECTION.

TOM LAAN [NL] -‐ CROWD DJ -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

CROWD DJ IS A DANCE CONTROLLED INTERACTIVE SOUND MIXER THAT GIVES THE CROWD CONTROL OVER THE MUSICAL OUTPUT. EACH AREA OF THE DANCE FLOOR ACTIVATES A SOUND CHANNEL. BUT, WHEN THE DANCING STOPS, THE MUSIC WILL IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN – THE INSTALLATION DEMANDS THE CROWD TO REMAIN ACTIVE, AND KEEP THE ENERGY GOING.THE WAY DJ’S

PERFORM NOWADAYS CAN SOMETIMES BE (SOMEWHAT) BORING. SO, WHY NOT CHALLENGE THE AUDIENCE A BIT AND GIVE THEM A BIGGER RESPONSIBILITY?

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS DANCE.

LOCUS SONUS [FR] -‐ LOCUSTREAM PROMENADE -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

LOCUSTREAM PROMENADE IS A SOUND ART INSTALLATION COMPOSED OF SONIC BEAMS ( 10 PARABOLIC DISHES EQUIPPED WITH SOUND SPEAKERS AND SMALL COMPUTERS). THE PARABOLAS ARE SUSPENDED IN THE PUBLIC SPACE

IN SUCH A WAY THAT A VISITOR ONLY HEARS THE SOUND FROM THE BEAM WHEN HE OR SHE IS DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH IT. THE LIVE STREAMED SOUNDS ARE SOUNDSCAPES COMING FROM REMOTE LOCATIONS AROUND THE GLOBE

THROUGH THE INTERNET.

BRIKO2K [BE] -‐ BOTS CONSPIRACY-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

BOTS CONSPIRACY IS AN AUTONOMOUS D.I.Y. PUNK ROCK ROBOTS BAND CONTROLLED BY ARDUINO CARD AND PROGRAMMED WITH PURE DATA. IT’S A KIND OF IRONIC METAPHOR OF WHAT MAINSTREAM ELECTRONIC MUSIC BECAME NOWADAYS USING THE TYPICAL GUITAR-‐BASS-‐DRUMS-‐VOICE.

-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐BIOSPHERE ORIGINATES FROM NORWAY AND IS FAMOUS FOR HIS AMBIENT ELEC-‐

TRONIC MUSIC, WIDELY KNOWN AS “ARCTIC SOUND”. TOGETHER WITH VIDEO ARTIST EGBERT MITTELSTADT, BIOSPHERE WILL PRESENT AN EXCLUSIVE PER-‐FORMANCE BASED ON HIS LATEST ALBUM, N-‐PLANTS. THE ALBUM, INSPIRED BY THE ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND BEAUTIFUL NATURAL LANDSCAPES IN WHICH A FEW JAPANESE NUCLEAR PLANTS ARE LOCATED, QUESTIONS THE INTERAC-‐TIONS BETWEEN AN ECOSYSTEM AND THE POTENTIAL DANGER OF RADIATION

AND WAS RELEASED ONE MONTH BEFORE THE FUKUSHIMA DRAMA.

KANGDING RAY [RASTER NOTON -‐ FR]-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

KANGDING RAY (DAVID LETELLIER, 1978) IS A FRENCH ARCHITECT AND MUSI-‐CIAN. HE EVOLVED AS A GUITARIST AND DRUMMER IN BANDS, WITH INFLUENC-‐ES RANGING FROM NOISE-‐ROCK TO JAZZ, BEFORE BUYING AN AKAI SAMPLER

AND MOVING ON TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC. HIS MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS CONSIST OF SUBTLE MELODIES THAT COMBINE WITH MACHINE SOUNDS INTO SUBTLE

AND RHYTHMIC TUNES. HE SKILFULLY INTEGRATES GUITAR LOOPS, BASS LINES, RESIDUAL NOISE, ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS AND DIGITAL ANOMALIES TO CRE-‐ATE A TEXTURED AND DREAMY SOUNDSCAPE. AT HIS LIVE PERFORMANCES,

DAEDELUS [NINJA TUNE / BRAINFEEDER / PLUG RESEARCH -‐ US]-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

DAEDELUS WAS ORIGINALLY TRAINED IN SEVERAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, BUT LISTENING TO RELEASES FROM WARP, NINJA TUNE, HE EVENTUALLY DE-‐

CIDED TO GO THE ELECTRONIC ROUTE. WE’RE GLAD HE DID THAT, BECAUSE HIS UNIQUE STYLE THAT FALLS ANYWHERE BETWEEN IDM AND RAVE IS EXCEL-‐

LENT. DAEDALUS IS MORE THAN A DJ AND AN ELECTRONIC MUSIC PRODUCER: HE IS AN ECCENTRIC CONDUCTOR WITH A UNIQUE TAKE ON BROKEN BEATS,

HEAVY BASS LINES AND SUPERMODIFIED SAMPLES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

ELEKTRO GUZZI [MACRO -‐ AT]-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐

ELEKTRO GUZZI ARE BERNHARD HAMMER, JAKOB SCHNEIDEWIND AND BERNHARD BREUER, FROM VIENNA; A DRUMMER, A BASS PLAYER AND A

GUITAR PLAYER. INSPIRED BY EARLY KRAUT, THEY MODIFY THEIR INSTRU-‐MENTS TO PLAY 100% LIVE TECHNO WITHOUT ANY COMPUTER BACKING,

OVERDUB OR LOOP. THE ACT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE FEW TO GET A TOUR OF JAPAN BOOKED AND APPEARANCES AT BARCELONA’S SONAR AND BERLIN’S BERGHAIN BEFORE ANY RECORDING WAS EVEN PROMOTED. THE MUSIC IS FASCINATING, ESPECIALLY THEIR PERFORMANCE ON STAGE, WHERE THEY

AS ONE OF MANY CONSEQUENCES, MANY DUTCH ORGANISATIONS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN EMERGING ART FORMS, WHICH PLAY AN INFLUENTIAL ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SECTOR,

INDUSTRIES AND SOCIETY ON AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL, WILL LOSE SOME OR ALL OF THEIR STRUCTURAL AND PROJECT BASED FUNDING. THIS WILL LEAD
