Study abroad? Whats it like? Advice from some

TOGAKU Students - Hiroto (3rd Year)

    Preparation:

Learn how to say necessary things

or vocabulary you need to use for

    living such as refrigerator, washing

    machine, food names, furniture

and so on. Be able to say

greetings, ask questions or ask for

favors. There are many ways of

how to ask and say things, so

search for them or ask a teacher or

    intern before you go!.

    :

    May I~? Can I ~? Could you~?

    Would you~?

English: Even if you cant speak

    English very well try to

    communicate with your host family

    frequently and be friendly with

them. Host families know that you

come to learn English, so you don't

    need to speak perfect English.

Even if you can't speak or express

something in English well, your host

    family will welcome and teach

English to you kindly. You don't

need to be afraid or hesitate, and

talk to your host family positively!

    :

You dont need to speak perfect

    English.

Know the manners and the rules and follow them!

Host Family Rules: Listen to the rules of your host family, house

or around the home. Your host family will tell you the manner of their

house or how to live, so ask questions to your host family such as how

to use washing machine, how you should get breakfast and so on. To

avoid troubles with misunderstandings, if you have any questions or

what you don't know, ask them to your host family and take a memo.

    Schedules

Make contact with your host family and your classmates frequently and confirm your schedules with each other. Your

host family doesn't stay at home all day, the often go out to work. They may have some schedules and go out.

Therefore, you should give your host family a schedule paper on which is written your detailed schedule. Although this

is a real story, when I went to San Francisco as an option trip of the university, my host family could not come to pick

me up to take me home. Like this, there are some cases which we are in trouble suddenly, so confirm how you should

go home and who you should get in touch with beforehand. If you will be late to come back home, or you are in a

trouble, get in touch with your teacher or host family and tell it as soon as possible.

Hiroto went to the USA , please contact the IEC Staff for more

information about how you can study in the USA.

Save yourself. Of course, the house which you are going to do home stay is safe.

However, if you go to somewhere far, it is not always a safe place. Be careful and don't be careless. Don't put expensive or unnecessary things in your bag and carry valuable things with yourself. Be careful to not forget something.

Manners Be careful about the manner, rules and custom in the country you stay. There are some custom and manners such as praying before dinner, going to church on every Sunday, and paying Tips in the restaurant in some country. Know the manners and rules, and follow them.

    " Could you tell me...?

    " I'd like to know...

    " Could anyone tell me...?

" (Do / Would) you happen to know...?

    " I don't suppose you (would) know...?

" I wonder if you could tell me...?

    Saying Thank You! (Very important!)

    " Thanks.

    " Cheers.

    " Thank you very much.

    " I really appreciate it.

" That's so kind of you.

    " I am most grateful.
