FROM THE PRESIDENTTogether In Pride. What does that mean? In October of 1990 at the International Associationof Gay Pride Coordinators Conference, I voted for that slogan as the International Theme mostlybecause It sounded better to me than any of the other suggested ideas. Over the past ninemonths, I hope I have discovered a deeper meaning behind that phrase .

To me, Together In Pride means that every person who considers himself a part of the Lesblan/GaylBlsexual community will be given the opportunity to fully self-express their pride or selfrespect without fear of reprisal either from within our communities or from society at large .Whether Black or White, Male or Female, HIV+ or -, Drag or Leather, we must never Judge thatone person's sense of Pride or self respect Is any less valid than anot her's.

I believe It Is time to set the past aside and to create a new vision of the future. One that isinclusive rather than exclusive. We must each, in our own way, set aside the prejudices we haveacquired whether they be racial, gender based or other. By working Together in Pride we cancreate a community that Is supportive and nurturing for all of Itsdiverse elements.

Gary Wells, President MLGPC

THE 1991 LOGO DESIGN

The 1991 Logo Design winner was submitted by Ms.Cynthia L. Lampman of Racine, a Quality Control Inspectorin the plastics industry. Cynthia loves cartooning and hasproduced animated television commercials. She gave thefollowing account of how she developed this year's logo.

"While remembering the 1990 Pride Parade, I vividly recallhow the color guard leading the parade were verbally andemotionally harassed by a black minister and various othersidentified as fundamentalist Christians -- or so their picketsigns suggested. This minister walked the parade routecontinually demanding (shouting) that the members of thecolorguard 'put that flag down, you don't deserve to earrythat flag, the American Flagdocs not belong to you.",Lampman further said that "through my design, I wanted toportray community, solidarity, and a feeling of strength byhaving the 'walking' lambdas carrying 'our' flag. Ido rotwant anyone tellingme and othermembers of thegay andlesbian community whichflag(s) 'belong' to us."

MIriam Ben,shalom was Parade Marshall In 1990.

RALLY SPEAKERSState Representative David Clarenbach (DMadison) is Speaker Pro Tem of the Wisconsin StateAssembly and has served in the legislature for nearly18 years. In 1972, David was elected to two termson the Dane County Board of Supervisors, and in1974 he served on the Madison City Council. Thatsame year, he was elected to the Assembly, representing east and central Madison .

As a member of the Assembly, David has chairedtwo standing committees - Tax Exemptions in1979 and Government Operations in 198 1. Since1983, David's colleagues have elected him SpeakerPro Tem. He is the senior member of DaneCounty's delegation to the Assembly and is theranking Democrat on the Labor and AgricultureCommittees.

David chairs the Special Committee on Reform ofHealth Insurance and Is a member of the AssemblyCommittee on Anancial lnstitutions and Insurance.

Some of David's accomplishments Include thenation's first Gay Rights Law, guaranteeing equalprotection for Gays and Lesbians In Wisconsin;legalization of homosexual sex acts through enactment of the Consenting Adults Bill; a budget amendment providing 1.2 million dollars in state fundingfor AIDS service organizations to provide direct careand treatment; Hate Crimes Protection that createsspecial criminal penalties for gay bashing and otherviolence motivated by bigotry; a comprehensive Billof Rights for people with AIDS and HIV Infectionthat outlaws discrimination and mandates increasedInsurance and drug treatment benefits.

David Clarenbach's topic will be "Wisconsin's PlaceIn the GaylLesbian Rights Movement." He will beIntroduced by Doug Nelson, Executive Director ofMilwaukee AIDS Project.

Peri Jude Radecic Is the legislative Director ofthe National Gay & Lesbian Task Force . She hasworked with NGLTF since 1987. Peri was theformer National Lesbian Rights Program Director forthe National Organization of Women.

Currently, Peri organizes annual National LobbyDays for Lesbian and Gay Rights at the congressional and grassroots level to enact the federal gayand lesbian civil rights bill. She lobbies Congress onIssues as diverse as the National Endowment for theArts, Department of Defense's homophobic policies, gay and lesbian families, anti-gay violence, civilrights, antl-gay judicial nominations, and securityclearances.

She received her B.A. in Rhetoric and SpeechCommunications from the University of Pittsburgh In1983 and was a collegiate All-American Discusthrower for the University of Pittsburgh.

Sergeant Peny Watkins was drafted In the U.S.army in 1967. Despite his declaration on theArmy's pre-induction physical forms that he had"homosexual tendencies," he spent the next 14years in the service of his country .

He's always been open about his homosexuality.Despite his open acknowledgement of his homosexuality, the Army repeatedly allowed him to reenlist before moving to discharge him in 1981. LastNovember, the U.S . Supreme Court let stand alower court ruling that the Army must allow him toresume his career because of his "exceptionallyoutstanding military record" and the earlier decisionsto allow him to re-enlist ,

The court decision did not address the Departmentof Defense's overall ban on gay and lesbians in themilitary, but Watkins has said that he will continue towork to overturn the policy. In the settlement ending this 10-year legal battle , the Army has agreed topay Perry $135,000 in back wages and provide fullretirement benefits.

I' m grateful I was able to sha re David 's final days withhim . It gave me the opporunityto say good -bye: .. . and to lethim kno w how much I 'd miss him, to let him know hewouldn't be forgotten.

To many, David is a statistic, just another AIDS death .And that's what's reallywrong. He wasmy friend , mymentorand my confidant.

I vowed to thinkofmy friend everyday. It's not difficult .Some days I'm sad . most days, I 'm mad . Anger motivates me .
