Mutual Flourishing

Forward in Faith expresses its gratitude to theArchbishop of York for making arrangements forthe Bishop of Burnley’s ordination which gave fullexpression to the Guiding Principles enshrined inthe House of Bishops’ Declaration.

The first Guiding Principle speaks of the respectand canonical obedience that lawful office-holders deserve. The Archbishop of York presidedin York Minister and the Bishop of Burnley tookthe oath of due obedience to him. No one presentcould have been in any doubt as to theArchbishop’s metropolitical authority or therespect in which he is held.

The fourth and fifth Guiding Principles embodycommitments to enabling those who, fortheological reasons, are unable to receive theministry of women bishops or priests to flourish, and to making sacramental and pastoral provisionfor us ‘in a way that maintains the highestpossible degree of communion and contributes tomutual flourishing’.

The reference to a ‘degree of communion’recognizes that full communion cannot existwhere some bishops and priests are unable toreceive the sacramental ministry of others. Forover twenty years traditional catholic priests havebeen granted ordination by bishops with whomthey enjoy full communion (because they canreceive the ministry of all the priests whom thosebishops ordain). The ordination of women asbishops gives rise to a need for similar provisionfor ordination to the episcopate. Sucharrangements contribute to enabling our priestsand bishops to flourish, allowing them to

experience at the moment of ordination the fullcommunion with the ordaining bishops that allother ordinands enjoy.

We are grateful that the service in York Minsterwas nevertheless characterized by a very highdegree of communion and fellowship, expressednot least in the fact that all could receivecommunion together.

The arrangements determined by the Archbishopof York also contributed to ‘mutual flourishing’. Wetrust that no one imagines that the flourishing oftraditional catholic ordinands could involve theirbeing ordained by bishops whose sacramentalministry they cannot receive. If all the malebishops present had participated in the laying onof hands, the Bishop of Stockport (whose graciouspresence we acknowledge with gratitude) wouldtherefore have been alone in having to refrainfrom doing so. It would be difficult to see that asan expression of ‘mutual flourishing’.

Plainly, a future female Archbishop of York couldnot be the principal consecrator of a traditionalcatholic bishop. By delegating that ministry to theBishop of Chichester, Archbishop Sentamu hasensured that there need be no difference betweenhis role on this occasion and that of a futurefemale archbishop. We hope that those whosupport the ordination of women as bishops willagree with us that any such distinction should beavoided.

The Chairmanof Forward inFaith reflects

on theconsecrationof the Bishop

of Burnley

Martyn Neale explains why wemust take the General Synodelections seriously!

Will you be voting in the election this year? No, notTHAT one: the General Synod election. All electedseats in the Houses of Clergy and Laity are up forgrabs and it’s vital that the Catholic group should beas generously represented as possible. This will onlyhappen if those entitled to vote can be persuaded tovote for our candidates. If we hope that they might,we must be sure that we do too. Simples, as we’vecome to say.

Most clergy have a vote as do lay members ofdeanery synods. It’s surprising how many electorsdon’t get round to voting. Perhaps they think theycan’t change anything or that General Synod’s awaste of time. It may be that they don’t know muchabout any of the candidates. Some probably file thevoting papers away to deal with another day butnever get round to it. Whatever the shortcomings ofthe past, we really can’t afford to let a single vote gobegging this year. It might be worth checking thatyour own parish has actually filled all its allocated layplaces on your Deanery Synod. If not, now’s the timeto put yourself forward and claim that place, alongwith the vote that goes with it.

Like it or not, General Synod is the forum where theChurch of England has its discussions and takes itsdecisions. Although much of its business is routineand necessarily dull attracting little coverage in themedia and press, headlines can be hit when somecontroversial subject comes to the fore. Recently, itsfailure to pass the dreadful women bishopslegislation in 2012 became one of the most widelycovered stories. Parliament weighed in too, witheven the Prime Minister feeling compelled (andqualified) to opine his views. The subject itselfcontinued to receive great attention over thefollowing months, though the subtleties of the debatewere lost. With remarkable and unexpectedfleetness of foot, business managers in the Synodwere able to arrange negotiations between all partiesand achieve the swift passage of a simpler, fairerMeasure at the end of 2014.

Let’s be clear: the 2012 legislation failed thanks notonly to the votes of committed traditional Catholicsand classical evangelicals. It was support fromothers, who though they were generally in favour ofwomen as bishops but could not countenanceproposals which would have made it well-nighimpossible for us to remain in the church, that tippedthe balance. It was a welcome sign that cogentarguments that promises once given should be kept, that it was ridiculous to be asked to vote for anunseen Code of Practice and that the inclusivity of

our broad church should be maintained could stillpersuade Synod-members of integrity to vote for whatwas right and just, rather than that which waspopular. Without their courage we wouldn’t be hereto thank them. Those principles need be guardedinto the future.

So where are we? We have a new Measure, craftedto maintain the breadth of belief and practice in thechurch. It includes checks and balances with astraightforward appeal process to an IndependentReviewer in perceived instances of discriminatorypractice. It may not give us everything we mighthave wanted but it promises to provide (on paper, atleast) sufficient for us to maintain our place. Morethan that, it speaks of wanting those who cannot inconscience accept the ministry of women as priestsor bishops to flourish. Yes, flourish; not just limpalong until we give up.

The challenge is thrown down to us as much asanyone. We’re told we’re wanted and that there’sroom for us. Do we believe that? Do we want tostay? Do we want to flourish? If so, we need to berepresented at all levels of church governance, whichincludes the General Synod. We must make theeffort to get our people elected so they can help theliberal majority live up to the spirit as well as theletter of the legislation that has been agreed.Remember, most of those who voted in 2012 for oureffective ejection from the church will no doubtthemselves hope to be re-elected to the Synod. Wewill need to be watchful in case their 2014conversion to inclusivity is short-lived.

I’m a member of a group charged with maximisingsupport for catholic candidates, clergy and lay. Wehope that in every single diocese there will becandidates for whom we can vote with confidence. To that end, there have been discreet meetings upand down the country of key laity and clergyidentifying local people who will co-ordinate supportfor both candidates and voters in this autumn’selection. Getting the right candidates is the firstthing – gaining votes for them is the next. Advice tocandidates and electors will come in due course. Itwill cover matters such as hustings, electionaddresses and the workings of the SingleTransferable Vote system which is used. In themeantime, be assured that every effort is beingmade to secure the best result for this crucial Synod election.

The last few years have been exhausting for so manyof us and the insults we’ve suffered have left theirscars. How we feel for our Synod reps who have hadto speak and vote against so much for so long. We’ve had a measure of success and temptingthough it might be to take a break from what mightbe considered church politics, we can’t afford to becomplacent. The Church, General Synod, the peopleof England, need us and our Catholic contribution. The future is there for the grasping, if only we havethe courage and commitment. What a relief itwould be to speak and vote in favour of things inthe years to come – and what a blessing we couldcontinue to be to the Church as a whole.

The General Synod takes itself veryseriously. So must we.

Get out and Vote!

The Catholic Group and Forwardin Faith Elections OfficerAnne Gray has been appointed by the catholicGroup in Synod and by Forward in Faith to help runthe vital election campaign in 2015. She will beliaising with local representatives to find suitablecandidates to stand for election and offeringsupport and training to those candidates. Herwork is vital as we seek to flourish in the Church ofEngland. Speaking about her role, Anne urged apositive and proactive attitude going into nextyear's General Synod elections: "For the first timein over 25 years, we won't be entering thoseelections labelled as being anti-everything. Let'stake up the opportunity to be constructive andpositive, and let's be proud of who we are."

The title given to the next Here IAm Vocations Conference at SaintStephen’s House from Friday 28thto Sunday 30th August, aimedspecifically for Anglican Catholicmen interested in exploring thepossibility of priestly ordination inthe Church of England. Writingafter last year’s conference one ofthe participants said:

“I wanted to say thank you for themost extraordinary andtransformative weekend. Havingarrived thinking I could pick upsome useful tips for negotiating theselection process, I left with acompletely new understanding ofvocation and, for the first time, ready to approach discernmentwith an open mind and heart.

“It may be that I was a singularlycynical and arrogant candidate, butI can say that our work and prayerover the weekend affected mepowerfully, and I feel blessed. Ihave never opened up before as Idid in the group session onSaturday and, in doing so, I foundout things about myself that I didn'tknow before.

“I am sorry to gush, but I amimmensely grateful for beinghelped to speak and to listen with

openness and honesty, entirely asmyself. Whatever now happens, and wherever this process leadsme, I have learned a lot and seenhow much more there is to learn.”

Please never discount thepossibility that God is calling you tobe a priest and the continuedpresence of Anglo-Catholics in theChurch of England can only beassured if we continue toencourage and to grow newpriests. So please, everybody, putthis date in your diary and pray forthose at the Additional CuratesSociety who will prepare this event.Pray for those that God may becalling to priestly ordination anddon’t be afraid to ask yourself, orsomeone that you know, if they arewilling to take the plunge.

The Confraternity of the BlessedSacrament was founded in London in1862 for clergy, religious and laycommunicants, being members of or incommunion with the Church of England. Its original name was ‘The Confraternityof the Body and Blood of Christ.’ Itsoriginal objects were:

(1) The Honour due to the Person of OurLord Jesus Christ in the BlessedSacrament of His Body and Blood; and

(2) Mutual and special Intercession atthe time of and in union with theEucharistic Sacrifice.

Thus begins the new Preamble to therevised Constitution of the CBS whichwas approved by the Council-General on6th October 2014. Thanks to Dr ColinPodmore’s research, we now know thatan original copy of the Manual printedfor the Inaugural Meeting on 4thDecember 1862 is preserved inLambeth Palace Library, and thisPreamble, reflecting that foundationaldocument, links us properly with theintentions of our forefathers andestablishes the basis of what wecontinue to be about 153 years later.

Constitutional revision is no easy matterand, if it is to be done properly, it takestime. It has been something theTrustees have had before them since2012 and various draft revisions havebeen considered by two meetings of theCouncil-General. We were grateful tosome CBS members in the diocese ofChichester for sending us a resolutionwhich asked us to effect changes whichensured that we would be in EucharisticCommunion with one another, definedour objects so that the government andfunds of the CBS remained in Anglicanhands, gave Lay Associates a share ingovernance at all levels, and providedappropriate checks on the powers of theOfficers. Given that these very properaspirations were fully examined by bothTrustees and two Council-Generals, Ihope that we have done sufficientjustice to them although, as we know, one cannot please everybody all thetime!

The starting point, of course, is the newPreamble, as above. This underlines ourAnglican roots and reminds us that ourpurposes spring from those roots. Weexist “for the advancement of thecatholic faith in the Anglican tradition.”However, to avoid ambiguity when thereare various interpretations of this withinworldwide Anglicanism, there is aclarification which states thatmembership of the CBS “shall be opento communicant members of the Churchof England, and such other Churches(being churches which recognise theorders conferred in the Church ofEngland as the Council-General shallfrom time to time determine, who alsosupports the Objects, accept theCatholic faith, and adhere to theunderstanding of the Catholic

Priesthood espoused by theConfraternity, and observe the practicesof the catholic religion.” As before, theCatholic priesthood remains defined as“male priests ordained within the maleapostolic succession.” All of this, ofcourse, is necessary because of theunhappy divisions within the AnglicanCommunion.

With regard to tenure of the office ofSuperior-General, this is now limited tono more than two consecutive terms offive years with, if necessary, a break oftwo years before a candidate is eligiblefor a further term or terms.Furthermore, he must now act inconsultation with, and having regard to,the views of his fellow Trustees incertain matters. This was not the casebefore! Likewise, there are now checkson the powers of the Trustees as agroup, particularly in regard to thedisbursement of monies, without properconsultation with the Council-General.

We were asked to look at the matter ofLay Associates having a share ingovernance at every level of the CBS.Looking at this very fully, we had to bearin mind that ours is a sacramental anddevotional society and that these thingslie within the stewardship of our priests. However, this needs to be held inbalance with the proper aspiration thatlay men and women have a full part toplay in ensuring that our objects areproperly fulfilled. Indeed, we are all, priests and people together, accountable to one another for thesethings. But presbyteral office imposescertain obligations and responsibilitieson our clergy and, as a Confraternity, wemust not lose sight of this catholicunderstanding and it is right that itshould be reflected in the way weorganise our life. For the last couple ofyears I have extended an informalinvitation to each District to send a LayObserver to the Council-General. Thiswas a preliminary attempt to show thatwe were convinced of the necessity ofhaving Lay Associates participatingwithin the Council-General. From thestart there was the need to be seen tobe doing things with transparency andso avoiding any future accusation thatthings were happening, particularly with

regard to CBS funds, behindclosed doors. Under theprevious provisions, theCouncil-General (alwaysmeeting at least once a yearas an AGM of the CBS)consisted of the Officers(Trustees) and DistrictSuperiors and certain otherPriests Associate attendingas honorary members. Therevision now extends thisprovision to Lay Associateswho will be honorarymembers of the Council-General on the same basisas these other honorarymembers (that is, not as LayObservers).

The election of a DistrictSuperior, and of anaccompanying Lay Associateto serve on the Council-General, is dealt with by anew provision whereby eachDistrict is required toconvene an Annual Assembly of allPriests Associate and Lay Associates“for the purpose of promoting theConfraternity within the District and atwhich there shall be EucharisticWorship.” It is at this meeting that “allPriests Associate in the District shallelect a District Superior to serve for aterm of 5 years. In addition, the LayAssociates shall elect annually fromtheir number a Lay Associate to serve asan Honorary Member (of the Council-General).” By this means, LayAssociates are elected directly to serveas honorary members of the Council-General by their brethren within theirDistrict and not by invitation of either theSuperior-General or the District Superior.

Thus the constitution of the Council-General continues to reflect the beliefthat the life and affairs of theConfraternity properly remain under thedirection of its Officers who are also itsTrustees, but now more obviously inconsultation with its District Superiors, and with regard to their views and thoseof Lay Associates elected as honorarymembers. The Lay Associate elected bythis means may also serve as DistrictSecretary and this means that there canbe continuity of representation andinvolvement at both district and nationallevel.

I hope that a copy of the revisedConstitution will soon be available onthe website and this will enablemembers to see its provisions in detail. The Confraternity in its Districts mustnow begin the process of ensuring thatthe agreed changes to our life arebrought about. There needs to be anAnnual Assembly at which a DistrictSuperior is elected by its PriestsAssociate, beginning a possible five-yeartenure of office, and at which a LayAssociate is elected by all the LayAssociates to serve as an honorarymember to the Council-General and,

practically, as District Secretary.

The next stage in the renewal of our lifewill be an attempt to take an audit ofmembership nationally and to see howWards and Districts are faring. It may bethat these will need to be changed bothin number and geographical location sothat they better serve the objects of theConfraternity in the parishes and playtheir part in that mutual growth andflourishing to which our Church is nowcommitted in circumstances so differentfrom those in which our founders livedbut, at that same time, just aschallenging. Let us continue to pray toGod, through his Son Jesus Christ whomwe adore in the Blessed Sacrament ofhis Body and Blood, that we maypersevere unto the end in the faith, practice, and communion of his holyChurch. This prayerful desire mustencourage us still, as it did ourforefathers and benefactors in 1862.

CBS ConstitutionBishop Roger Jupp explains the process thinking behind and content ofthe newly agreed constitution of the CBS.

The Glastonbury PilgrimageIt had been many years since the Bishop ofRichborough had been a pilgrim to Glastonbury, but Bishop Norman described last year’s AnnualPilgrimage, at which he gave Benedictionfollowing the afternoon procession, as “allsplendid” and with “an excellent atmosphere allround – and I know a great encouragement toso many.” And then Father Geoffrey Squire, writing the following day to its organizers, commented that 2015 “will be my 50thsuccessive Glastonbury Pilgrimage.

I have taken hundreds of young people to it overthe years and it never ceases to have an impacton them. One who was deeply moved by thatpilgrimage as a boy is now awaiting his selectionconference with a view to ordination and he is byno means the only one.” Indeed, five deaconsawaiting ordination last year - one of them fromWales - joined with me as Principal Celebrant, and with the Bishops of Ebbsfleet andRichborough, and Bishop David Thomas, andwith a large number of concelebrating priestsfrom south-west England and elsewhere, and anumber from

Wales. In addition, in excess of 600 pilgrimsgathered in the abbey ruins in perfect weather, uniting to proclaim the pilgrimage theme Beholdthe Lamb. The previous year’s rain had certainlynot dampened the spirits of all those pilgrims norhad it discouraged them.

Bishop Jonathan of Ebbsfleet was the preacherat the Mass and Canon Steven Kirk from thediocese of Llandaff, the Vice-Chairman of thePilgrimage association, gave the devotionaladdress at the afternoon liturgy. It was aparticular joy that pilgrims from Wales wereencouraged by his words in the knowledge thatthis historic pilgrimage centre can be a meetingground for faithful Catholic Anglicans from manyplaces who come to witness to the faith oncedelivered to the saints.

This year’s Pilgrimage on 11th July falls on theFeast of St Benedict, the Father of WesternMonasticism. Glastonbury became aBenedictine foundation towards the end of the7th century when King Centwine of Wessex

apparently introduced the Saxonmonastic community, thesuccessor of the original Celtic one,to the Rule of St Benedict. However, Glastonbury’s floweringas a Benedictine community reallybegan with the appointment of StDunstan as its abbot around theyear 940. From his time dates itsgreat revival as a Benedictinehouse and as one of the maineducational centres in thecountry.

Chapter 72 of Benedict’s Rule tells the monks “toprefer nothing to the love of Christ.” Benedict, ofcourse, reminds us that the love of Christ shouldalways be at the heart of our discipleship, that heshould be first in our lives. So it is that thisyear’s Pilgrimage has as its theme Christ First, atheme which echoes those words of St Benedict, repeating that call to us today “to prefer nothingto the love of Christ.” We are pleased that theBishop of Richborough will be with us again, butthis time as the preacher at the Pilgrimage Mass.It was his observation that our Pilgrimage thisyear providentially falls on St Benedict’s day andwhich has led us to our theme. No doubt he willbe reminding us of what Benedict’s vision can befor us now and how we may interpret that call toreveal Christ First.

As Chairman of the Pilgrimage Association, aswell as representing The Confraternity of theBlessed Sacrament, now a substantial financialsponsor of the Annual Pilgrimage, I am hopefulthat the support of CBS will play its part inensuring that the Pilgrimage becomes firmlyestablished as a witness to the Church of thestrength and vitality of the Catholic Anglicans inBritain. The invitation comes to all readers ofTogether to help reinvigorate the Pilgrimage, placing it once again in the national calendar ofevents of traditional Catholic Anglicans. We hopethat you will want to join us at Glastonbury thisyear. Tell your friends, please, and invite them togather with us around the Lord’s Table in thishistoric and ancient place, one of the foremostpilgrimage sites of the Church in the British Isles.

The Society has been formed, under thepatronage of S. Wilfrid and S. Hilda, to provide‘ministry, sacraments and oversight which wecan receive with confidence’. One of the ways inwhich it does this is by welcoming priests asPriests of The Society. They are priests fromwhom we can receive the sacraments withconfidence, because we know that they havebeen ordained by a male bishop, who stands inthe apostolic succession of bishops at whoseordination a male bishop presided. Priests of TheSociety are in a relationship of full communionwith a member of the Council of Bishops of TheSociety.

But how will people know that the church inwhich they worship is one that is served by suchpriests? How will laypeople know that they are infull communion with a member of the Council ofBishops of The Society and indeed with all theother parishes who receive pastoral andsacramental ministry and oversight from thosebishops? When people are travelling, how willthey identify a church where they can worshipwith confidence, without having to worry aboutwhether the priest who stands at the altar wasordained in the historic succession that werecognise?

To answer these questions, the Council ofBishops of The Society has now invited parishesto affiliate to The Society. A mailing about this, and about passing a Resolution under the Houseof Bishops’ Declaration, has gone out widely. (Itwill of course be for the parish priest and the layofficers of the parish to decide the best time forthe PCC to consider these issues.)

Affiliation is open to parishes that are under theepiscopal oversight of a member of the Council ofBishops of The Society

as their diocesan or area bishop, or

because they passed ‘resolution C’ under the Act of Synod and that resolution remains in force during the two-year transitional period, or

because of a Resolution under the House of Bishops’ Declaration.

Affiliated parishes will pay a fee of £60 eachyear (by annual, quarterly or monthly standingorder). This will make a small contribution tothe cost of running The Society, and the factthat they are paying each year will tell us thatthey still wish to be part of The Society.

Society parishes will receive a laminated‘porch card’ for display, proclaiming that theyare affiliated to The Society. They will also belisted on the Society website(www.sswsh.com), with the postcode of thechurch building, a link to their entry onwww.achurchnearyou.com and a link to theirown website if they have one.

Parishes that are affiliated to The Societywill (optionally) be able to register inaddition as Forward in Faith parishes at noextra charge. This will enable them to sendrepresentatives to the National Assemblyof Forward in Faith (which elects theCouncil of Forward in Faith), and to receivediscounts on advertising in Forward inFaith publications and on its website(www.forwardinfaith.com).

There will be no process for laypeople tobecome ‘members of The Society’,because The Society is not a club or amembership organisation, but part ofthe Church. People belong to the Churchnot because of signing a form or payinga subscription, but because they have receivedthe sacraments of baptism, confirmation andholy communion. All baptised Christians whoreceive the sacraments in a parish of The Societyor from a Priest of The Society will belong to TheSociety.

But running The Society costs money, just asrunning a parish does. The fact that there is nomembership fee for belonging to a parish doesn’tmean that there is no need for people tocontribute to the cost of running it. Those who tosupport the aims of The Society are to help withthe cost of running it by joining Forward in Faith –the membership organization which finances andsupports The Society.

So they took Jesus and he wentout bearing his own cross, to theplace called the place of a skull, which is called in HebrewGolgotha. There they crucifiedhim”.

So we come to the last stage of thisterrible journey. We have seen Jesusbetrayed, abandoned, arrested andtried, convicted and sentenced todeath. Now we must watch him die.We know we are watching the Son ofGod, the Word made flesh, thesecond person of the eternal Trinity.Yet what we see is the stark reality ofhuman suffering, suffering such asmen and women have endured fromtime immemorial and even today, allover the world. Jesus took on humanflesh and that meant he had to takeon the suffering which flesh is heir to.

So we see Jesus slapped and struckin the High Priest’s court. He ismocked, spat on, beaten by thesoldiers. He has a bundle of thornspushed on his head. He is exhaustedfrom a night without sleep, a daywithout food. He has beenquestioned, made to stand hour afterhour before his judges. Then he iscondemned. He is whipped with theterrible Roman scourge and thenforced to carry his cross through thehot dusty streets of Jerusalem.

We are not complete strangers to thatkind of suffering. We may not havebeen through it all but we have beenhungry. We have been mocked, unjustly blamed for things we havenot done. Jesus’ experience was farworse but in our own lives we haveshared it. We know something of

what he feels. We can identify withthis part of the passion. Hunger, tiredness, betrayal, mockery, unjustcondemnation are all part of thehuman experience.

Yet when Jesus gets to Golgotha hisphysical suffering goes beyond us. Itis hard, stark and real. Hammer onnails, nails on wood. There are criesand screams from the other victimsas flesh is torn – but silence fromJesus. Then the Crosses are set up.How often we have gazed at a cross, looking at that twisted, naked, suffering body. We have tried toimagine the pain – the pain in hishands and feet where the nails bitethrough nerves; the pain in his armsas they support the weight of hisbody; the pain of suffocation, theterrible agony of thirst. For the mostpart this is a pain beyond ourexperience. We can glimpse it - partsof it - but we know it could be ours.People are tortured today and diehorrible deaths at the hands of othermen. Cancer can give a pain like thatof a Cross. Often it is only when weare called to suffer this pain that weenter the experience of the CrucifiedChrist.

Yet there is a deeper suffering of theCross, a suffering which all of usknow. The Cross is the ultimatefailure. Christ never intended to becrucified. God did not intend his Sonto be crucified. Christ took on flesh tobring men back to God. He came toshow men God’s love and to teachthem to love. He began with greatsuccess. Crowds flocked round him, miracles abounded, people werehealed, comforted, raised from thedead. Jesus was the centre of a great

religious revival, or so it seemed. Infact, it was not so. People came forthe miracles, for the fun of hearing agreat speaker but they did notunderstand what he said. BeforeJesus ever reached Jerusalem hecould see his ministry was a failure. He was not taken in by outwardsuccess. People were not returning toGod with changed hearts and loverenewed. When Jesus arrived inJerusalem he was alreadydisillusioned, frustrated, angry withhis people’s failure to respond.

That is something we can share. Webegin our Christian life, our marriedlife, our religious life with suchwonderful hopes. It is exciting; it issuch fun. There is so much to do butGod is on our side. Life is anadventure following God through evermore exciting country. It doesn’tnecessarily work out. Christian lifecan get dull; marriages can stagnateand fail and we in the religious lifecan find our hopes frustrated by adisintegrating, ageing community, byour own failure of vision. The work wethought to enjoy becomes empty. Theprayers we used to love becomeroutine. Failure is all around us.Ultimately it is God who fails. God hasnot kept his promise. He has let usdown. For us the temptation is toescape failure. We bury ourselves inactivity. We manufacture success. Weconvince ourselves that God reallywants success. We seek happiness, good fun, other people’s admirationand we forget the real cross in ourlives.

Jesus resisted that temptation. Hecould have gone on for years as asuccessful preacher. He could have

gone on with miracles, teaching and publicadulation but he wouldnot compromise. He choseinstead to enter the mysteryof failure. He failed his friends;he failed his Mother. He did notbecome what they wanted him tobe. His talents, charm, wisdom wereall wasted. The cross was not avictory, not a fulfilment. It was thedestruction of all he could have been.Failure is bleak and desolate. It is areal wilderness – without beauty, without feeling: grey, cold, endlesslydepressing. Yet it is only in thewilderness that we can truly find God.When we gaze at the Cross today wepass beyond physical suffering. We gobeyond the psychological pain; weenter into the weakness, the waste, the disillusionment, the depression offailure and if we stay there longenough, if we look honestly at thefailure of our hopes and joys, thenperhaps we will find God.
