Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Welcome to Father Tom Lenten Parish Mission

Welcome to Father Tom Donaldson, CSsR, a Redemptorist priest from Chicago who is with us this weekend through Tuesday, conducting our Lenten Parish Mission. The CSsR” stands for “C” congregation, “Ss” most holy, “R” redeemer. The Redeptorists were founded in 1849 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori near Amalfi, Italy. Members of the congregation are either priests or consecrated religious brothers. For many years the Redemptorist Fathers operated St. Alphonsus Church in Davenport, but as their numbers decreased they turned the parish to the Diocese of Davenport to operate some years ago. Father Tom will preach at the weekend Masses and deliver a Mission Presentation Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings at 7:00, with refreshments to follow. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow in your relationship with God, especially since we are so close to Holy Week. A col-lection to support Father Donaldson’s missionary work will be taken on Tuesday evening.

Parish Mission Please join us on the nights of March 18, 19 and 20 for our Parish Mission! The mission begins each night at 7:00 pm and will include a reception afterwards. The following will be on the reception menu for each night: Sunday night: Fruit cobbler and ice cream Monday night: Snack mix bar Tuesday night: Wine and cheese

Holy Week

Passion of the Lord Saturday, March 24 at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 9:00 a.m. On this day the Church celebrates Christ's entrance into Jerusalem to a accomplish his paschal mystery. We gather to hear the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. We bless palm branches and carry them in procession to the church as we cry "Hosanna". Then

we hear the account of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Thursday March 29th, 7 p.m. Mass The Mass of the Lord's Supper begins the Triduum, the three holiest days of the liturgical year. During this special liturgy the sacred oils received at the Chrism Mass in Davenport are presented to the faith community to be used throughout the coming year, feet are washed, the Eucharist is transferred to a place of adoration in the chapel of ease, and the altar of sacrifice is stripped in preparation for Good Friday.

Good Friday March 30th, 7 p.m. Celebration of the Lord's Passion Good Friday is the most somber day of the Church year. The altar is bare. We come to hear the Passion Story from John's gospel and to venerate the Cross of Christ.

Easter Vigil Saturday, March 31st, 8:15 p.m. This evening our faith community gathers to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection, the greatest celebration of the church year. The evening consist of lighting a fire,

proclaiming the story of salvation through several scripture readings, blessing the waters used for Baptism, and lighting our parish Easter candle, and renewing our Baptism promises. The celebration usually lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Easter Sunday April 1st, 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. Mass

Encounter Alefa We encounter Alefa in Malawi, where seeds are helping her family survive an uncertain climate. How can you care for God’s creation this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

Encounter Alefa Alefa is a mother, grand-mother and farmer. She provides for her three children, three grandchil-dren and husband by sell-ing her crops. If they fail during one of Malawi’s rainy seasons—or in a drought—her family goes hungry. One particularly difficult year, Alefa was forced to sell some of her land to make ends meet.

She knew she had to start planting crops that could withstand Ma-lawi’s changing climate. So, she attended a CRS-sponsored seed fair, where farmers learn the best crops to plant for the upcoming year, and receive vouchers so they can choose the seeds and sup-plies they need. Besides rice, Alefa bought corn, cabbage and to-mato seeds. This way, she can continue farming rice but also feel confident that, even if her rice fails, she will have other crops to sell.

“This harvest will provide food, shelter and education for my fam-ily,” she says. In a few short months, Alefa will be growing corn and harvesting hope.

If you didn’t receive a Rice Bowl last w e e k e n d , they are available in the

Thank You . . .

Sacred Heart Catholic Community, Thank you for the card. I hope you are doing well. With 18 credits there is no shortage of things to do. I will be in Iowa City for Holy Week and Easter. It will be good to see my family and friends. I hope you are having a great Lent. I have been doing Exo-dus 10 with a few other seminarians. It is a program that uses various fasting disciplines to detach from various things, attach to God, and ultimately achieve freedom. The paradox of freedom by following God’s law is interesting and great. Thank you for your con-tinued support. God Bless,

Isaac Doucette, seminarian

Skiff Chaplain to be Installed On Friday, March 23, Father Reynolds will install as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Michael Huntsmen. He is the new chaplain at Skiff Hospital. He is a Catholic, and anticipates being ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Des Moines later this year. He will have access to the Eucharist in our church tabernacle for distributing to Catholic patients at Skiff Hospital.

Life After Loss

"The holiest of holiday are those kept by ourselves in silence and apart: The secret anniversaries of the heart." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Battling over the food — who’s eating what, who’s not, how many

bites need to be eaten, and who’s getting dessert — is one of the fastest ways to invite tension to the dinner table, and it can also be re-sponsible for worsening, not improving, picky eating habits. Try this: Every night, make sure to serve at least one well-liked item, so no one goes hungry (and try to ignore what they’re NOT eating). That basket of bread, jar of peanut butter, or platter of fruit might be the easiest sanity-saver you’ve ever encoun-tered!

Tuna Casserole 6-8 ounces rotini pasta or egg noodles 1 (5 oz ) can tuna 1 can cream of mushroom soup ½ cup milk ¾ cup shredded cheddar cheese Cook pasta according to package directions. In a 2 qt casserole dish combine tuna, cream of mushroom soup and milk, Add cooked pasta and cheese. Bake covered at 350 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes until heated through and cheese is melted.

“Come to the Table”

The Easter Bunny Needs Help!! An Easter Egg Hunt will be held Easter Morning after the 11:00 AM Mass. We would greatly ap-preciate donations of individu-ally wrapped candy and plastic eggs to fill. There is a box lo-cated in the Gathering Space for your donations or they may be left in the parish office by Monday, March 26th. Thanks!

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

If your parish celebrates the Mass for the Third Scrutiny for catechumens preparing for Baptism at the Easter vigil, you may hear the Gospel story of Jesus raising his friend, Lazarus, from the dead. One of the many lessons learned from this Gospel story is that of Martha’s confession of faith in her friend: “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” Raising Lazarus from the dead was a mira-cle and a clear display of God’s power. It was also an un-mistakable sign that Jesus was the Christ. Good stewards of their faith see signs of Christ’s presence all around them and are eager to respond in faith. The stewardship question for us is: Who or what will be the Lord of our lives? Will it be Christ Jesus? And if so, how will we respond to him? Are we willing to walk in his footsteps and follow his ex-ample?

If your parish does not celebrate the Mass for the Third Scrutiny for catechumens, you may hear the Gospel story of Jesus inviting his disciples into a great mystery with curi-ous pronouncements: Those who love their lives just as they are will lose them. If a grain of wheat dies, it will bear much fruit…What does Jesus mean? The climactic event of Jesus’ passion and death is drawing closer; a time when the great confrontation between Jesus and the powers of dark-ness take place. When Jesus is lifted up, he will draw all to himself. The Christian steward knows life can’t be lived in complacency. We are called to die to self, bear more fruit, be raised up with Jesus. Jesus brings discomfort to those who are comfortable. Jesus urges us to give witness in his name. How will we respond?

Jasper County Take Away Hunger

The first one-hour shifts will begin at 9 a.m., and we can have up to four teams packaging per shift. We ask for a donation of $30 per person or a total of $360 for a full team of twelve people to help cover the cost of the food packaged.

We have two other events planned for this year that will be open to everyone. Our sum-mer event will be on July 7 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and our fall event will be on October 13 at Holy Trinity Lu-theran Church.

I feel self-conscious striking my breast

at Mass. Isn’t this gesture rather exag-

gerated?

The Roman Missal proscribes that the assembly strike their breasts at “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault” during the Confiteor. It doesn’t specify striking three times. Later in Eucharistic Prayer I, the priest strikes his breast with his right hand, saying, “To us, also, your servants, who, though sinners....” Clasping our hands in front of our breast is a recog-nized gesture of prayer; striking the heart or breast is an ancient penitential expression. It calls to mind Jesus’ par-able of two men who prayed in the Temple, a prideful Pharisee and a humble tax collector who “beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner’” (Luke 18:13). “Gestures, language, and actions are the physical, visible, and public expressions by which human beings un-derstand and manifest their inner life” (Built of Living

Stones, NCCB/USCC, 2000). The liturgy has a rich tradition of movements that can foster or distract from prayer. “When the gestures are done in com-mon, they contribute to the unity of the worshiping assem-bly. Gestures which are broad and full in both a visual and tactile sense support the entire symbolic ritual” (Environment and Art in Catholic Worship, 56). Thus, at Mass we bow

our heads, bend our knees, and beat our breasts out of hu-mility and reverence for God, “for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 18:14).

Ilustradas Para Jovenes Y Adultros are adapted from the writings of Fr. Lorenzo G. Lovasik . Both volumes have beautiful pictures of the saint and then a brief descriptions of his or her life. In the smaller book the pic-tures make them easy to keep children’s atten-tion while having the story read to them. It is easy enough for second or third graders to read on their own and would be a lovely First Communion or Baptism gift. The larger vol-ume is better for the older child and can be a quick introductory reference for a Confir-mation name. This book includes some newer saints such as Beata Teresa de Cal-cutta and San Pio Pietrelcina. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. The Meaning of the Gardens of Scripture The agony Jesus endures in the Garden is heartbreaking and inspires awe. Our Lord feels loneliness before the bitter cup the Father extends to him via the hands of an angel. Like the posture he will assume when nailed to the cross, Jesus shows his strength through humble acceptance and abandonment. Gardens don’t appear often in Scripture, but they are im-portant. There is the Garden of Eden, the place of God’s creative love and man’s original sin. There is the garden in the Song of Songs—a garden of passion, possession, and life-giving union. Where is Jesus’ tomb, and where does Mary Magdalene, the transformed lover, find Jesus on Easter morning? In the Scrip-tures, gardens are a place of new life, sin, and redemption. It’s where lovers go; where love is declared and tested. This is important in understanding the drama of our Lord’s agony in the Garden. It is the drama inside of love. It is the drama of acceptance and abandonment, trust and generosity,

life and death. Jesus knows this and goes into the Garden to do what Adam failed to do in the first Garden. He goes to pay the price of love. He engenders new life by giving his own. He looks at the chalice, the price of our salvation, and with a heart full of gener-ous, uncomplicated love, accepts the Fa-ther’s invitation. “Not my will but yours be done.”
