thank you for your gifts to the mercy hospital foundation.
in 2012 your gifts helped the mercy hospital foundation contribute to the hospital in many ways.
through your generosity, more than $625,000 was given back to the hospital to areas of greatest
need, providing critical equipment, patient education, nursing and health careers scholarships, and
much more. additional gifts directed to mercy hospice care and mental health services meant
that these areas were supported and their endowments, which will help to maintain these vital
services in the future, grew substantially. the many gifts that were directed to specific purposes
such as cancer care and cardiology meant that donors directly impacted patients receiving these
services. thank you for all that you contributed to mercy last year. you’ll find a listing of the full
impact of your gifts on the facing page and pages 6, 15, 16 and 17.
on the following pages you will read several stories about how your gifts made an impact in
2012. We hope you enjoy and are inspired by them. you will also see that you are part of a large
community of individuals who believe in mercy’s mission and support it philanthropically. thank
you for being a part of this amazing group.
the mission of the mercy hospital foundation continues -- to support the hospital in its work to
heal and comfort the sick and improve the health of the community in the spirit of Jesus christ and
the catholic tradition of the sisters of mercy. your gifts have made you a part of this mission too.
We appreciate your confidence in mercy hospital foundation. thank you very much for
your support.

she was a world traveler with her late husband mick and following his death, she traveled with friends. she and her ’63 corvette were members of the classy chassy cruisers car club and she presented the chris lillig memorial cup to the all-around trophy winner of the old capitol criterium bicycle races held each spring in downtown iowa city, an award named in memory of her son chris.
When Jayne was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer she quickly made sure her affairs were in order, including charitable bequests. one of the charities she included was the mercy hospital foundation with a gift to benefit mercy hospice care.
Jim said that their mother and an aunt had received hospice services, and as an active member of the community Jayne was well aware of mercy’s hospice unit which opened in 2009. she chose to make her gift by designating the mercy hospital foundation as the beneficiary of several iras.
Beneficiary designation of all or a portion of an ira is a simple way to make a gift. Jayne met with her ira administrator to complete the paperwork, ensuring that her thoughtful intentions would be carried out. her generous gift supporting mercy hospice care is a legacy that will help provide care to many patients and their loved ones now and in the future.

Jaynane “Jayne” lillig was a “gracious, vibrant, warm and friendly” person according to her big brother, Jim coffman of iowa city.

new equipment improves patient careeach year gifts to the mercy hospital foundation make available many hundreds of thousands of dollars for the purchase of necessary equipment. much of it is used directly with patients at the bedside, in surgery or in some type of rehabilitation. other equipment is critical for diagnostic purposes, such as the lab or radiology. and some of it helps with support services such as dietary and housekeeping. the intensive care unit (icu) and laboratory are just two of the areas that benefited from donor support in 2012.
a critical piece of equipment called the arctic sun 5000 was purchased for use in the icu. When someone experiences cardiac arrest outside of the hospital, perhaps at the gym or while shoveling snow, the patient may be a candidate for the arctic sun. the unresponsive patient is rushed to the icu, sedated, and then the arctic sun goes to work cooling the body to a temperature of 33 degrees celsius (91.4 degrees fahrenheit) for a period of 24 hours. this slowing of the body’s metabolism increases the patient’s chance of neurological recovery. the equipment then gradually warms the body back to a normal temperature over a period of 16 hours. “it really is amazing,” says Bunny morrison, nurse manager of critical care services at mercy, “to see someone come in near death and then to see them walk out again. this equipment is absolutely wonderful to have.”
in the past two years the mercy hospital foundation has helped to acquire many items that play a significant role in the anatomic pathology lab. several of them are part of a process that is critical for diagnosis. “patients undergo surgical procedures to have body parts removed, such as tumors, lesions, organs, parts of organs, skin, bone and so on,” says Jim rogers, administrative director of mercy’s laboratory. “these specimens are initially

the mercy hospital foundation has helped to acquire the newest equipment available to help this diagnostic process. as Jim describes it, the first stage is to put the dissected chunk of tissue through various alcohol and solvent washes to remove formaldehyde from the tissue and replace it with liquid paraffin. this is done in a tissue processor and is usually an overnight process using a sakura Vip5 tissue processor. the second stage is to remove the tissue specimen from the processor and imbed the tissue into a paraffin block. that is accomplished using the tissue tek 5. next the tissue on the glass slide goes through a staining process where it is exposed to different colored stains which help differentiate cellular elements within the tissue. this is done using the stainer for histology/cytology. finally the stained slide is ready for examination under a microscope by the pathologist. “the foundation’s help with equipment purchases is wonderful,” says Jim. “We appreciate it.”

Cash Giftthe simplest method of providing support for mercy is with a cash gift. these gifts may be made with a personal check, credit card authorization or online by clicking make a donation at www.mercyiowacity.org/MercyFoundation.
Annual Supportannual support at every level is deeply appreciated and crucial to maintaining the quality of our programs and services. if you wish, you may set up a pledge or direct debit plan to give monthly, quarterly, or annually. please indicate your preferences on the enclosed contribution form.
Ways of giving Planned and Major Giftslong-range estate and financial planning allows you to make a substantial contribution to mercy while benefiting your personal financial plans. Bequests, retirement assets, gifts of life insurance and appreciated securities are among the deferred giving options that the mercy hospital foundation would be happy to discuss with you. for more information, please check the appropriate box on the enclosed envelope or contact the foundation office.
Honorary or Memorial Giftsan honorary or memorial gift is a thoughtful and meaningful way to recognize a colleague, friend or relative. the foundation will notify the honoree or next-of-kin that you have made a gift. the person being honored or memorialized is recognized in the foundation’s annual Report to the Community.
Honoring Mercy Caregivershonoring mercy physicians and caregivers with a donation through the foundation is a meaningful way to recognize the extraordinary care you or a loved one received. upon receipt of your gift, the foundation will send a letter to the healthcare professional(s) you have honored to let them know of your thoughtfulness.
Matching Giftsmany contributors multiply their support to the foundation by making use of their employer’s matching gift programs. mercy is grateful to these companies and foundations for their generosity. We urge you to ask if your employer offers such a program. please see your employer’s human resources director for the necessary form to send with your gift.
the act of giving is deeply personal. each contribution to the mercy hospital foundation is received with gratitude and appreciation. there are many ways to contribute to mercy’s mission--to heal and comfort the sick and improve the health of the community in the spirit of Jesus christ and the catholic tradition of the sisters of mercy--while achieving your personal financial goals.

“i am especially passionate about the Hospice unit and am proud that we have this service to offer. the quality of our patient care is directly related to the presence of our Foundation.”

Areas of SupportYou may choose to direct your gift to any of the following areas. If you have additional interests or questions, please contact us for more information.
Area of Greatest Needmany donors choose not to direct their gifts to any particular area, making them available for discretionary use in the area of greatest need.
Arts Program the arts in all their forms are powerful. they have the ability to capture our attention, provide relief, lift our hearts, energize spirits, and restore a sense of balance. through the visual arts, the mercy arts program strives to create a healing environment for patients, family members, visitors, and staff. mercy’s visual arts collection continues to grow through generous donations that allow new acquisitions each year.
Endowment Fundgifts and bequests are often received with the stipulation that the principal be maintained intact and invested to create an ongoing source of income for a specific purpose. mercy has created permanently endowed funds to benefit hospice care, mental health services, nursing scholarships, and equipment and facility needs of the hospital. a portion of the income earned from these funds each year provides a reliable income stream to support these areas. additional gifts may be added to these funds at any time, and you may wish to create a new endowed fund for a specific purpose. By creating or contributing to a permanently endowed fund, you will leave a lasting legacy to support mercy’s mission and services into the future.
Equipment and Facilitiesgifts and bequests are often received to support the capital needs of specific areas of the hospital such as cardiac, cancer, surgery, education and more. naming opportunities exist for facility expansion and remodeling projects.
Health Careers Scholarshipsthanks to the generosity of mercy employees, the mercy hospital guild, and others, health careers scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who are graduating from schools in mercy’s ten-county service area and plan to pursue a career in the health sciences. the students who are selected receive $1,000 tuition awards that are renewable for up to four years.
Nursing Education Fundthe nursing education fund is a permanently endowed fund that awards semi-annual grants. each year a portion of the investment income, along with supplemental funds from the mercy hospital foundation, provides support for staff to further their professional nursing education. you may wish to do what other families have done — honor loved ones with a permanently endowed nursing award in their name.
To Make Your Giftto contribute to mercy please send your gift, payable to mercy hospital foundation, with your completed contribution form in the enclosed business return envelope. you may also make your gifts online at www.mercyiowacity.org/MercyFoundation. click on “Donate Now.”
Recognitioncumulative gifts of $1,000 or more to mercy hospice care are recognized on a donor wall in the hospice area. estate gifts and cumulative gifts of $5,000 to any area or combination of areas are recognized on the donor wall in the hospital lobby near the skywalk entrance. all donors are acknowledged in the foundation’s annual Report to the Community.
