SafeFlush Toilet SeatDid you know that when you flush the toilet, even with the lid down, germs can escape and land on other nearby objects in the bathroom such as your toothbrush? Every time you flush the toilet a fine mist, much like an aerosol spray, containing harmful micro-organisms is spread throughout the bathroom. To help tackle this problem Croydex have developed a unique toilet seat that inhibits the spread of germs and bacteria by sealing them into the toilet bowl. The SafeFlush toilet seat is a revolution in the fight against the spread of bacteria in the bathroom area. With its innovative double seal – one on the inside of the lid and the other on the base of the seat itself, this toilet seat ensures that germs and bacteria are kept where they belong, making the bathroom a safer place.

IntroductionTheflushingoftoiletscanresultinthegenerationofaerosols whichcontainbacteriaoffaecalorigin.Theresultingaerosolsvaryinsizebutcanbedistributedsomedistancefromthetoilet,posingapotentialriskleadingtothedisseminationofpotentiallydisease-causingorganisms,especiallyinhealth-caresettings.

Determination of Aerosol ProductionApre-cleanedanddisinfectedtoiletbowlwasinoculatedwithasuspensionofcellsofEscherichiaColiK12(E-Coli)toachieveca 107colonyformingunits(CFU)ml -1inthebowlon9occasions. Aftereachinoculation,thetoiletwasflushedwitheithera standarddesignseatfittedintheclosedpositionortheSafeFlush seatintheclosedpositionandeitherallowedtoshutundergravityalone,orbyapplyinglighthandpressuretothelidtoensure closure.Thetestwascarriedout3timesforeach.Theemissionof theaerosolaffectwasmeasuredthroughtheuseofagarplates positionedeitheradjacenttotheedgeoftheseat(left,rightand front)orontheflooratadistanceof1and2metresfromthe toilet.Agarplateswereexposedfor15minutesaftereachflush andthesequenceinwhichtheseatdesign/lidposition combinationsweretestedfollowedthesequencedescribedinthetablebelow.Theplateswerethenincubatedfor24hoursat37°C andthentotalcoloniesofbacteriawerecounted.

ConclusionThistestillustratesclearlythattheSafeFlushseatout-performedastandardtoiletseatunderidenticaltestconditions.SafeFlushtoiletseatsinhibittheopportunityofairbornebacterialinfection.
