Cultural competence: the level at which a person can successfully interact with people of differing backgrounds, creeds and cultures.
The University at Berkeley defines cultural competence as:
“A set of academic and interpersonal skills that allow individuals to increase their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities within, among and between groups. Culturally competent physicians are able to provide patient-centered care by adjusting their attitudes and behaviors to account for the impact of emotional, cultural, social and psychological issues on the main biomedical ailment (Hendrick).”

The Nuts & BoltsThe Presentation
Tips:- Avoid hot button issues- Stick to heritage sites, ie: UNESCO; historically significant and
touristy areas- Always end with a question and answer portion, espc when you have guest speaker(s)
- Music, Food and Traditions- Using guest speakers:
- always have a back up presentation or plan ready- guest speakers are much more effective in delivering the reality of other countries
than any other source- they frequently tell their friends what they are doing, and invite them, too!- many are so flattered, they insist on bringing a traditional food dish, or some items
from their country
