Proper Preventative Maintenance ProgramAdds Life to Maior Equipment

THE proper maintenance of mowingequipment is of paramount importance

to golf club superintendents. The establish-ment of a planned preventative mainte-nance program will add years of cuttinglife to equipment that represents a majorcapital investment.

The purchase of a new tractor with afive-gang mower is the equivalent of buy-ing a new $3,000 automobile. When youtake possession of a new car, you driveit from the dealer's showroom with greatcare. When you get it into your garage,one of the first things you do is read overthe manufacturer's instruction and operat-ing manual. For the first 500 miles youdrive over good roads at moderate speedsto break it in properly. At the end of thisperiod, you go back to the dealer for acheck-up to make sure your car is func-tioning properly and all engine and bodyparts are tight.

Break-In Period ImportantIf every superintendent could impress

upon his operators the importance of abreak-in period for all mowing equipment,they would reap tremendous dividends inlow-maintenance and high operating per-formance. Just like a car, each new trac-tor and gang mower unit should have abreak-in period. It is not necessary to babythe unit for three or four weeks as youwould a car, but care should be taken notto overload the tractor or take it overrough terrain for at least the first 10 to15 hours of operation.

When you take delivery of your tractor,and if it is not necessary to put it to workimmediately, it is a wise procedure to runthe engine at a slightly over idling speedfor three or four hours. While most tractorengines have had a factory run-in, it isgood practice to give the unit an addi-tional run-in period.

Gang mowers should be checked also tosee if all points are properly lubricatedbefore a wheel is turned because, the lifeof fairway mowers actually depends on

how the cutting edges are adjusted for thefirst eight hours of operation.

When the mowers leave the factory, theflyknife reel and bedknife steel are groundas close as possible to conform to naturalsurfaces. For every half hour during thefirst eight hours of operation, extra careshould be made to see that proper adjust-ment is maintained. This will eliminateuneven wear and prevent distorted sur-faces and uneven cutting edges.

Give your mowers at least an eight hourbreak-in period at slow speeds over rela-tively easy, level terrain. After this "shake-down" operation, they should be checkedthoroughly and any nuts or bolts that haveloosened should be tightened.

Small power mowers also require abreak-in period. The motor should be runfor about two or three hours before actu-ally operating the mower. The unit shouldbe checked for proper adjustment everyhalf hour for the first eight hours of opera-tion - just as a gang mower should bechecked. After this eight hour shake-downperiod, check the machine and tighten anynuts or bolts that may have becomeloosened.

Proper Lubricating PracticeUse only clean oil and grease of the grade

recommended by the equipment manufac-turer to lubricate your units. Too often, oilor grease cans are left open in the main-tenance shed. These opened cans collectdust, dirt and even metal chips which canbe forced into precision bearings and causepremature failure. Your automobile servicestation does not use contaminated greaseor oil when they lubricate your car, so whyuse it to lubricate your tractors, gangmowers or power mowers.

Set aside a period of time each week fora complete, overall check and lubricationof all equipment. Take a little longer thanyour daily check-up and you will insurelong-life and low-maintenance costs foryour equipment.

equipment you operate. This record can behung up on the wall where the equipmentis stored. Fill in information such as datesmachines were lubricated, the batterychecked, the mowers sharpened and allother maintenance measures taken, to-gether with such other data as may berequired. Check instruction manuals forfrequency of lubrication.

Use of Instruction ManualsEvery manufacturer of mowing equip-

ment goes to great expense to prepare andfurnish instruction manuals and parts listsfor each piece of their equipment. Neverassume that you know all about mowingequipment and that you can "File and for-get" this manual. Your maintenance manand operator, as well, should read throughthe manual carefully and familiarize him-self with the new equipment. It will payoff in savings later on. This manual is animportant part of your equipment, almostas important as a wheel, and should beplaced in an active file for ready reference.If your manual has become lost, write themanufacturer of the equipment for an ad-ditional copy for your records. Give modeland serial number of equipment. Make sureyou get the correct manual for yourmachine.

Malntenanee of Ga oIine Engine'Tractor engines are of the water-cooled

type and will not require as much attentionas the air-cooled engines used on smallpower mowers. The level of water in radi-ator, the oil in sump, and the carburetorair cleaner, should be checked regularlyeach day the unit is used.

Power mower engines are air-cooled andhave air ducts and screens that are de-signed to keep the engine running at thecorrect temperature. Grass clippings anddirt should be cleaned regularly from thescreens and ducts to assure the engine"breathing" properly and running at righttemperature.

Another occasion for excessive mainte-nance of engines is created by the use ofdirty gasoline. When contaminated gaso-line is used in the tank of tractors orpower mowers, dirt is carried to the car-buretor where it clogs jets and leaves theengine starved for gas. This loss of enginepower, extra maint nance costs and down-time can be avert d only by using cleangasoline.

Unwa tched grass clippings can alsocreate extra maintenance. Unless they arecleaned off the top of the gasoline tankand around the fill cap, clippings may dropinto the tank. Ga will break down the

He will be a happi r andmore efficient, effective worker in helpingto keep the course in top condition.

A Word bout Mowing pe dYou probably have never seen anyone

pushing a hand mower too fast. Most"walk-behind" power mowers are designedto give the best cut at this same normalwalking speed. With riding-type machines.the speed is increased, but only slightlyfaster. Never operate power mowers at fullthrottle.

Tractor and gang mower speeds havebeen the subject of much discussion. Mostfairway type mowers have been designedfor speeds up to six miles per hour andwill give the best cut within this speedrange. On fairway mowers, the height ofcut is adjusted from the roller which mustfollow the natural contour of the groundto give a proper cut as set and to give thegolfer the lie he expects on the fairway.If the tractor speed is excessive, the rollerbounces off the ground, and irregularitiesin ground level result. If spring-loaded roll-ers are used, this condition is obviouslyminimized and often eliminated. At speedsfaster than six miles per hour, maintenancecosts mount rapidly. If high speed is a"must," there are high-speed mowers avail-able other than fairway types, which havebeen specifically designed for this opera-tion. Using pneumatic tires that do not de-pend on a roller to control th depth of cut.they can be operated at any speed com-patible with the contour of the ground andthe comfort of the operator.

Proper djustment dds LifeProper adjustment of r el type mowers

has a definit bearing on the life of thmachine. Mo t operators have a tend ncyto maintain too tight an adjustment whichcauses prematur wear on the flyknif reeland bedknife steel. This wear is very obvi-ous and noticeable even from a casual ob-servation. A too tight adjustment not onlycauses w ar to flyknife and bedknife, butis trans mitt d through the bearings andgears right through to the drive wheels.The tight adjustment will also creat ex-

cessive friction and overload the enginesof power mowers.

To know just what the proper adjust-ment is, an understanding of the princi-ple of cutting is helpful. Cutting itself, issimilar to the shearing action of a pair ofscissors. The cut is made by two sharpsquare surfaces moving together andacross each other's edge.

If you take a new pair of scissors inproper adjustment, they will cut paper orcloth with little effort. If you tighten theblade adjustment, you can hardly operatethem at all and this is what happens whena reel type mower is too tight. Conversely,when you make the blade adjustment tooloose, the scissors will not cut but merely.pinch. When the adjustment of a reel typemower is too loose, it only pinches thegrass between the reel and bedknife and isdragged across the knives, actually round-ing off and removing the sharp edge. Whenthis happens, it is necessary either to "lapin" the two surfaces with an abrasive orset the adjustment slightly tighter thannormal to wear the surfaces back to orig-inal sharpness.

Just what is the proper adjustment for areel type mower? In all truthfulness, thereis no definite rule or measurement for thisother than the fact that the two surfacesshould be adjusted to zero clearance inorder to offer just a slight contact betweenthe fiyknife reel and the bedknife steel.If this contact is maintained at all timesyou will have a relatively self-sharpeningeffect. As the unit is operated during theseason, the front edge of the bedknife steelis worn away, leaving a feather edge. Thisis formed by the reel as it revolves acrossthe cutting surface. To eliminate this con-dition, the steel should be ground in a bed-knife backing grinder or filed to a squaresharp edge.

rinding MowersUnless the proper tools are available, it

is better to have the authorized dealer foryour equipment do the job for you. He hasthe proper equipment and know-how to dothe job properly. Bear in mind that theimportant surfaces which do the actualcutting can be quickly ruined and manyyears of life that is available in the mow rdestroyed if you subject them to impropergrinding. If you have the proper grindingmachines, write the manufacturer of yourequipment for grinding specifications be-fore attempting the job yours If.

Proper \Vintcr 'toragt'The ideal time to do any major repair

work that may be required is b fore the

tractors are stored away for the winter.When the mechanical work is completed,run the engine until the oil is warm d andthen change oil. Remove the battery andstore in a warm dry place. Drain waterfrom the radiator. Remove the spark plugsfrom the engine and cover the top of eachpiston with about one ounce of lubricatingoil, then replace spark plug. Drain out gaso-line from the tank and carburetor and blowout gas lines. It is wise to check condenserpoints, and spark plugs, replacing them iffaulty or worn. Before placing tractor upon blocks, check tire pressure and makesure it is proper for each tire. Make surethat liquid filled tires contain a non-freez-ing solution.

Remember, the storage area for yourtractor should be dry and away from fer-tilizer or plant food.

Before storing gang mowers, remove thframes. Remove the gear casing coversand inspect all gears and bearings, thenreplace all worn parts and reassemble. Oilall bearings and lubrication points. Sharpenfiyknife reel and b dknife if requir d. Whenmaintenance work is complete, thoroughlyclean both mower and fram and repaint.Store units in a dry place to prevent x-cessive weathering.

placed on the top of the piston and thespark plug replaced. Ground out the sparkplug wire, then pull up the engine againstcompression. The cutting unit should beinspected and resharpened if required.Make sure that all bearings and gears arelubrictaed, then clean complete mower andframes with a detergent and paint. Storethe mower in a dry place away from fer-tilizer or plant food.

Review Equipment eedsThe time when you are repairmg and

storing your equipment for the winter isthe time to do your planning for Spring.Review your requirements and, based onthe condition of your present equipmentand the job to be done, get prices onneeded equipment to present to your clubcommittee or Board of Directors. Yourequipment dealers will be glad to arrangedemonstrations of equipment for you atany time in order to help justify your re-quests for additions and replacements.Make sure, when planning for Spring, yourequest an adequate set of tools to keepyour machines maintained for the comingseason. And make sure, too, that all storedequipment is adequately covered by in-surance.

National Golf FundIssues Report

ATIONAL GOLF FUND, INC., has is-sued a treasurer's report covering re-

ceipts for National Golf Day in 1952 and1953 and expenses to date.

Receipts for 1952 National Golf Day co-sponsored by Life magazine and the PGAWere $80,112 of which half was contrib-uted to the USO. Of the remaining half$20,000 was allotted to PGA relief, benev-olent and educational funds, caddie funds,USGA Green Section turf fellowship, Jun-ior Chamber of Commerce national juniorchampionship, and AWVS Swing Clubs,leaving a balance of $20,086.50.

This year's National Golf Day receiptswere $108,719.65, of which $54,357 is ap-proximately the half earmarked for USO.This leaves about $74,116 of National GolfFund, Inc. funds available for distributionto golf educational, welfare and charityactivities that can qualify according to In-ternal Revenue dept. regulations.

National Golf Fund, Inc. welcomes in-quiries from qualified organizations. FredRiggin, Sr., pres., Mueller Brass Co., PortHuron, Mich., is president of the Fund.With him on the Fund's board are otherwidely known amateurs and PGA officials.

In July M. R. (Scotty) McLaren, fieldexpert for Toro Mfg. Corp., celebrated his

HEN the registration list at thiyear's Oregon State Junior tourna-

ment was checked, it revealed Eug nG&CC led the list with 1 entries. Youwould understand why, if you spent a fewhours at Eugene's beautiful, complete andbusy layout obs rving the active routinof their pro, Warren Wood. This is thefirst and only pro job Warr n has ev rheld, having taken ov r his duties in 1935.A nativ of Eug ne, he began his comm r-cial golf career as caddie at the club wh n12 years of age.

Wood has given his enthusiastic atten-tion to the hundr ds of important "littlethings" - the m mbers' childr n whom hinstructs in his junior classes - a programwhich he started back in 1940. In the yearsthat have passed, Wood, his officials andhis members have seen th acorns growinto some of the club's and the community's

healthiest timber.Eugen was host to the USJCC National

Junior Amateur championship in 1952 andwas the site of the Oregon Stat Amateurin 1930 and 1950.

Wood, who is not a circuit golfer him-self, usually entering only the Northwest,Oregon, and Bing Crosby tournaments, hasa 9-year-old son, Byron, who may developinto a top competitor. This year Byronwon th "Pee-Wee" flight of the OregonJunior. Although none of Wood' pupilshave won major tournaments, h has acurrent crop of junior he feels will bheard from; particularly Shirley Siegmundand Elaine Porritt, both 14, show greatpromise, he feels. Shirley won the clubjunior titl with an 6 in her final matchagainst Elaine this summer.

great things are in store for him. Geersten,who has carded a 73 in tournament play,comes by his sport naturally. He is acousin of John Geersten, well-known SanFrancisco pro.

The emphasis of junior activity extendsbeyond golf into other fields of sports, afeature of which is junior swimming in-struction. Try-outs for the city's juniorswimming championship were held in theclub's pool in August.

The success of Warren's persistent pro-gram of activity promotion is briefly re-flected by the activity in his pro shop. Thetidily arranged, neatly kept shopping cen-ter is well patronized by the members'families.

Like so many golf professionals, how-ever, Wood is confronted with the perplex-ing problem of golf cart storage. The clubhas 450 members, the great percentage ofthem active golfers. With no permanentenclosure available outside his pro shop,Wood is confronted with the responsibilityof storing 320 carts. As the accompanyingphotograph shows, there are times whenalmost all available pro shop space is occu-pied with the two-wheel pack ponies. Hereports that the Con-Voy type of cartwhich folds to occupy approximately a

square foot of floor space, yet permitswheeling of carts for efficient storage ar-rangement, is enabling him to graduallyovercome part of his congestion problem.
