Tomorrow Carvoeiro may 2012

It has been a long winter in Portugal and the Algarve has not gone unscathed by the economic goings on both within the country and further afield but Carvoeiro is most definitely open for business and is gearing up for the next summer season.

The sight of empty shops and closed down businesses have not hit Carvoeiro as hard as other areas mainly thanks to the continued efforts of businesses within Carvoeiro who remained open through the winter months and to initiatives by groups such as Vozes Intensas (see story on page 5).

In the past month Carvoeiro has seen brand new businesses opening up, including two new fashion shops on Rua dos Pescadores, others coming under new management (the Trattoria in Quinta do Paraiso), while others such as the Atlantic

Sud shop on the O Farol have expanded into new premises.

Any businesses that had been closed during the winter have reopened in the past month, many with new menus, promotions or offers and there have been improvements made not only to bars and restaurants but also to the general infrastructure of the town, namely the painting of zebra crossings and re-lining of the parking spaces throughout the town to make parking better.

In and around Carvoeiro there are also lots of things going on for residents and visitors proving that Carvoeiro is much more than just a beautiful place to lay your towel on the beach (see our May events guide on page 6).

It may only be the start of the summer and there are still many months to go but the outlook in Carvoeiro is certainly sunny.

SAND SCULPTURES

For the tenth year the International Sand Sculpture festival will be opening in Pêra.

This year the theme of the event is "Idols" with examples from films, music, fashion , politics and religion being carved out of the sand by professional artists.

The park officially opens on May 25 to the public.

Paulo Joseph Rodrigues has been appointed as the new director at the Suites Alba resort, owned by the former international footballer Luís Figo and his partner Paulo China.

“This is an excellent opportunity for my career and I hope to explore and maximise the value of the resort,” said Paulo Joseph Rodrigues.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

April marked the 11th anniversary of Carvoeiro being elevated to town status.

On April 19, 2001 Lagoa was made into a city while Carvoeiro, Parchal and Porches all became official towns.

In celebration of the anniversary Lagoa Câmara awarded Klaus and Dorothea Müller and Anneliese Pohl gold medals of merit for their work within the municipality.

INTERNATIONAL FAIR

Celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee while at the International Algarve Fair this year. The fair, held at the Fatacil ground in Lagoa,will be taking place on June 2 and 3 from 11am until 7pm.

Over 170 exhibitors will be there as well as entertainment for all the family.

ARTEALGARVE

The latest exhibition from ArteAlgarve opened on April 21 and will now run until June 9 at the Adega (wine factory) in Lagoa.

ArteAlgarve Open IV features more than 30 artists of many different nationalities with paintings, sculptures and art pieces available to buy or just to view.

WINE DONATION

A donation of 4,500 bottles of wine has been made by Karl Heinz Stock of Quinta dos Vales in Estombar. The wine has been given to Lagoa Câmara and institutions within the area and will be distributed to employees and members as a sign of solidarity during the financial crisis.

IN MEMORIAM

Nan Richardson, the co-founder of the Donkey Sanctuary in Estombar, passed away in April at the age of 80.

A celebration of her life was held on April 22 at the Fontes in Estombar.

Nan first moved to the Algarve in 1981 and she and her husband Peter Lee Landers founded the Donkey Sanctuary in 1989.

HARRY'S BAR 2 WERE THE WINNERS OF THE FIRST LEAGUE

After a long winter season the darts league in Carvoeiro came to an end in April with a presentation to all the winners held in Bistro 72.Every year darts is played between the bars in the town with the 2012 new season welcoming a thrid division in October.Organiser Evert Van Zanten said: “If you are interested in joining the league then call into one of the local bars to ask about taking part.“This year we will have three leagues to make the season shorter and more competitive for players and we will be starting agin in October.”Sadly, the league said goodbye to a long term player and one of the founding members of the league, Carlos “Torralta”, who died earlier in the year, he was remembered during the presentation for his love of the game.A special congratulations was paid to Sally from Bistro 72 who not only won the ladies singles compeition but was also the only player in the league to score 180 - congratulatons Sally, bully would be proud!

Hundreds of visitors ignored the weather and came down to the centre of Carvoeiro to celebrate Easter with a fair held in front of the square between April 5 and 8.

Live music, stalls selling local handicrafts, photos, cakes and jewellery, a huge inflatable bouncy castle area and a couple of Easter bunnies all added to the family fair feel.

The event was organised by the local community and business group Vozes Intensas who also put together the first gastronomy fair of Carvoeiro.

From March 31 until April 8, 13 restaurants prepared a special dish to be served for the event in their restaurants. This year Taste, Ele & Ela, A Vela, Tia Ilda, Onze, Jota Lita, Restaurante A Marisqueira, O Stop, A Fonte, Os 3 Jotas, A Galé, O Tasco and Pimenta Preta took part.

Claudia Boto from Vozes Intensas said: "We are trying to organise events that can involve the whole community and visitors and we will be working towards more events throughout the year."

Look out for details about the upcoming events organised by Vozes Intensas including a repeat of the traditional Marches to be held in June. All the music, dancing and costumes in the centre of Carvoeiro.
