a little sty e!There’s no denying that eeding your baby is

messy business - but now you can do it instyle!

is a range o stylishdevelopmental eeding products thattrans orm each moment o your babiesmeal time into a moment o growth,

learning and pleasure. BPA ree anddishwasher sa e mOmma is suitable rombirth and grows with baby rom bottle-eeding to weaning.

The unique bottles, cups and plates remainupright as baby uses them to ensure maximum

hygiene, it’s the per ect choice or parents wholike to look a ter their little ones with style and

when baby grows mOmma grows with them.

The best tip I would give new parentsis to moderate how many clothes they buy. It’shard to resist those tiny out ts! My advice is to buy twospecial out ts or when amily and riends visit. Then buy morepractical wash riendly clothes or everyday use. Most peoplewill buy you clothes as a gi t, and you’ll be surprised howmuch they’ll grow out o without wearing. The more ddly theout t the harder it will be to change a nappy too! Those on abudget should look at online auction sites or good condition

bundles o clothes.

You’re home; you’re on cloudnine. Your wi e or girl riend – thenew mother o your new-born child - is

still in hospital recovering. You won’t be ableto sleep. And you can’t stay on the ‘phone all night. So dosomething. Do something really use ul. Get the pans out;

put the oven on; get peeling, chopping, blanching, cooking– everything that you can get your hands on. Make as manymeals as you can, then pop them in the reezer. Let’s ace

it, you’re going to be a bit preoccupied when the amilycomes home. But you’re still all going to have to eat.

And when you do, those little home-made ready mealsyou made will probably be the best night’s work

you’ve ever done. Bar one, o course. The one nine months be ore!

restful sleep

J a nine Clem e n t s w w w.21s tce n turymumm y.com

One item that I’d recommend to new parents issome sort o mobile or their cot. We actually had two.

One she liked until about a year old. It was very colour uland had all sorts o shapes and things that moved, so she could watchit when she was in her cot. Every night we’d put it on when she went tobed and it would help soothe her to sleep. Then she lost interest in it.

We had another neutrally-coloured one (that looked nice in her nursery)that she loved listening to when she went to bed until she was about 18

months old. You can also get mobiles or travel, whichare great or the pram or on car journeys.

3Mobiles

I would de nitely recommendbaby sleep gowns or any

new parents. These are like a long nightie(that goes down over their eet) with an elasticated

bottom or your baby to wear in bed at night. Your babyis as snug and warm as they would be in a sleep-suit butmiddle o the night nappy changes are so much moresimple when there are no poppers to deal with. You simplyslide the gown up over the nappy, quickly change andslide back down. Quick, easy and your baby is disturbedas little as possible. You can also buy them with integral

scratch mitts, which I ound very use ul. I gave someto a riend’s baby who hated being undressed and

it stopped all crying during night changes.

peace of mindDigital Monitor TD300 by TOMY

Me lhttp :// w w w.p iginth ek itc hen .blog spo t.com

My number 1 essential or parents would be a digitalthermometer, the type that goes in the ear. It seems a bit

steep at the outset 30-50 ish quid, but I think I’m in love withmine. I have our children (aged 4-10) and a ter years o a ngaround trying to hold thermometer strips to their heads, or sticking theother digital kind under their arms and then clamping the arm down (youcan picture that with an ill 6 month old, right?), a digital thermometerthat can be used in the ear was like a dream come true. I just used itduring our recent bout o suspected swine fu, so simple, it takes about 10seconds to get a reading. I know I sound a little evangelical, but I do so

love products that make my li e easier!

A baby monitor is the must haveitem or any new parent. As rst time parents we

were so anxious but busy (!) and having the monitormeant we were able to get on with jobs around thehouse and garden whilst our baby girl was sleeping

without having to constantly check on her. Also, when wetook the big step o moving her cot to her own room, the

monitor gave us complete peace o mind through thenight as we could listen to her sleeping soundly and

know that she was sa e. A baby monitor providesconstant reassurance which was so importantto us as brand new parents. Look or monitors

with a good range and also help uladditional eatures such as a

night light.

6 Digital Thermometer Every mum I speak to mentions Muslin Cloths as theirultimate ‘must-have’. Dirt cheap to buy, they almost have too

many unctions to list: or the inevitable o posseting a ter milkeeds, or throwing over your shoulder while winding the baby,

or tucking down your bra i breast eeding or to help you cover up i youreeling a bit sel -conscious eeding in public - you‘ll always want to have aew to hand or packed in your change bag. They make great impromptu

bibs or dribble catchers, and olding one round the head end o yourbaby’s mattress will mean you don’t need to clean the sheets so o ten.Once li e becomes less about sick and more about messy ood you’ll

nd them invaluable or wiping up and protecting clothes (yours and thebaby’s!) Get at least 10-20 or everyday use - I guarantee they’ll be the

most use ul thing you’ll buy.

7 Muslin Cloths

The days my

two little girls wereborn were the best o my

li e. As soon as I saw them I eltincredibly protective and I wanted

to know that even i we popped outo the room and le t them alone or asecond the girls would still be OK...

I wanted to make the monitors reallyeasy to use while giving you

all the use ul eatures youneed as a parent.

9Baby Poncho

I would say a hoodedbaby poncho is an essential

item or babies and small children. It’s so mucheasier to put on than a coat because it just pops

on and o over their head, so i you’re shop-hopping,constantly going rom hot stu y shops to the coldoutdoors, it’s a real timesaver, especially i baby is

strapped into a baby-carrier, carseat or pushchair -you can just pull it over the top without unbucklingthem. You can even do so without waking them up

i they’ve allen asleep. It also acts as aconvenient way o covering yoursel up i you

need to do some discreet breast eedingin public and doubles up as a snuggly

pram or travel blanket.

8Baby Carrier/Sling

Wearing your baby is a must and I couldn’tlive without a baby carrier or sling. Whilst newborns

do sleep a lot there are times when your baby justwon’t want to be put down, usually at the time you most

need your hands ree. A carrier pleases both o you and

the motion will help to soothe your baby. I ound ours greator quick trips out to the shops and much easier thanmaneuvering the buggy and hanging on to a shopping

basket at the same time. Carriers are also muchmore convenient than a buggy in crowded

places and there’s no olding needed toget on the bus!

Babies love to eel secure and close toyou; so whether you are at home or outand about, a baby carrier can make thisa whole lot easier. We all know how heavybabies eel when carried or a while, so thestructure and com ort o a baby carrier isabsolutely critical. TOMY have developedthe Freestyle All Seasons Carrier inconjunction with and endorsed by, theAnglo-European College o Chiropractic(AECC).

The new carrier range rom Tomyis the only one on the market that

I’ve seen that gives ull support acrossthe parent’s back. A woman’s body is putunder immense strain during pregnancy, with the stress placed on muscles andligaments probably equivalent to runninga marathon. These joints may remainsensitive a ter childbirth. The Tomy carrierrange spreads the load evenly, easingthose vulnerable joints. The rst ew weeks

are tiring enough... It is very common or new mothers to create back and shoulderproblems because they’ve either carried their babies incorrectly or put extra strainon themselves. Joyce Miller, BSc, DC, FACO(US), FCC(UK)

Cotton wool is an essential item or any new parents.Newborns baby skin is really sensitive when they arerst born you shouldn’t use wet wipes or any other chemicals on them, that’s

where cotton wool and cool boiled water comes in really handy. Use this toclean your babies bum, its so t on their skin and won’t cause irritation andyou’ll be surprised how well it cleans those rst poo’s that are very sticky. You can also use cotton wool to top and tail your newborn as they don’t reallyneed bathing to start with, with cotton wool you can clean intimate areas andthen throw that piece away so you are not spreading any germs to start with.

You can use any type o cotton wool thoughthe balls work best.Ca rol Sm i th

From the minute your gorgeous baby arrives, allsquished and per ect, you are going to want a camera on handto capture every moment. From rst cuddles, to rst eeds, to rst smiles andbeyond - every second is going to eel so signi cant that you’ll eel impelledto photograph every one (and probably post them all on acebook in anendless proud parent parade!). And you must do - babies seem to changealmost by the day, especially in the early days, and in those rst ew sleep-deprived weeks (or months i you’re unlucky!), it can be hard to rememberexactly what happened when, and a photo-diary o sorts will really help tokeep the memories resh - and o course provide ample opportunities or

embarrassing your o spring later on!

Breast pads are anessential or any new

mother. Whether you are planning onbreast eeding or not, breast pads save you romembarrassing leaks (which believe me doeshappen!). They are also handy whilst eeding andi you are late with a eed - both prime times orleakage, especially in your baby’s rst ew months.I used to take some everywhere with me - inthe changing bag, my handbag, all over the

house in act. I like disposable breast padswhich you can buy cheaply rom the

supermarket and throw away whenyou are outand about.

The midwi e introduced me to the wonders oTea Tree oil It has a long history o use in traditional

societies. I you are pregnant or breast- eeding, check withyour doctor or midwi e rst. I was introduced to Tea Tree oil by mymidwi e a ter I told her how I was missing having a scented bath, Ihad to have lots o baths to keep my stitches clean. It smells nice, asmell that will always remind me o my tiny babies and has magicalhealing properties. It made a real di erence. Tea Tree oil can also beused to keep the nappy bin smelling nice and resh. You can eitherput a ew drops directly into your disposable nappy bin, or put somein the water i you are using traditional nappies. Its antibacterial andantiseptic properties will assist you in removing that yucky smelland potential germs. All in all, a must have product which is readily

I’d like to recommend the so t leather baby pre-walker baby shoes that are elasticated round the

ankle. Well, I think they are actually also suitable or walkers too,my almost two year old wears his round the house in place o slippersthat all o . Because that’s the best thing about these shoes: they don’t all o !Little legs can wave around as much as they like, and unlike any manner oother baby shoes, they WILL NOT COME OFF. So they are well worth spendingthe extra cash as they don’t go walkies at the rst opportunity and they t orages as it doesn’t matter it they’re a bit big. They come in loads o unky and

un designs, even or boys, or whom clothes are usually airly dull! What ismore they are so t enough to be akin to bare eet, which is recommended bydoctors or optimum growth, especially when learning to walk. I only wish they

made them in a smaller size, I can’t waitor my newborn to wear them.

A bouncy chair is an essential purchase or your baby. Most are suitable rom birth to around nine months.

They range rom a basic material covered wire rame or around£12.50 to, quite literally, an all singing, all dancing swinging experience

or £200. A bouncy chair is somewhere or your baby to sit in a reclinedposition. This is really help ul a ter a eed i they are a sicky baby, or su er

rom refux. You can sit the chair anywhere so your baby can watch whatis going on, whether that is you in the kitchen, or the trees in the garden. Most chairs come with a toy arch to entertain your baby, or you can givethem a rattle or a so t toy to hold. You can sit your baby in a bouncy chairto start weaning. Remember to use a bib or cover them with a muslinsquare in case o splattered ood! Even more use ul is a chair with awashable cover. I your bouncy chair has a rocking motion your baby will

nd this soothing and may sleep.

Swaddling Blanket16My essential item would be a swaddling blanket.

New babies love to eel warm and secure just like they didin the womb. It is amazing how a ret ul baby can be calmed down byswaddling, it is such a simple item to buy but one that I would recommend100%. I have used a swaddling blanket or every one o my our babies and ithas saved me rom many a long night o crying (which is always good whenyour a new parent). Swaddling also helps babies get into a amiliar routine

or going to sleep e.g. swaddle, bottle/breast then bed, babies learn toexpect the same routine which means it eventually becomes easier to put

your baby to bed.
