www.etfoassessment.ca TOOL // Student Learning Skills Self-assessment What is the tool? Student Learning Skills Self-assessment What is it used for? This is a student self-assessment that they complete each month and it goes home on the back of the parent newsletter. The skills listed reflect in student language some of the key learning skills from Growing Success and reflected on the report card. The tool is used to allow the students an opportunity to self-assess their application of the Learning Skills that month and to set both an academic and learning skill goal they will work on. This helps the students focus on areas for improvement and makes sure there are no surprises at reporting time for parents. It allows for collaboration between the student, parents and teachers in setting goals related to Learning Skills How do you use it? There is a discussion with the students about what each of the learning skills are and why they are important. We talk about what Excellent, Good and Satisfactory behaviour look like and sound like. The students assess themselves. The teacher collects them and if they agree with their self-assessment they put a check mark. If the teacher disagrees they give their assessment and reason. For example: If the child gave themselves an Excellent in contributing positively to class activities and I felt it was more a Satisfactory I would put S in the Teacher comment column and explain “I have had to speak to you a number of times this month for shouting out and not waiting your turn” . I usually add a general comment at the end. The students take this home to parents and parents are asked to go over with their child and to help them set a goal. Often parents will write a comment back.
