Tooleybuc Central School Strive to do well
The Bridge
Welcome Back We have all had a wonderful first two weeks back in school in full face-to-face learning. Our students must be congratulated on the way they transitioned back to their learning and for also maintaining hygiene practices to help keep our community safe. Recently students have completed a few surveys to see how they felt about home schooling and the return to school.
The most common response was related to how happy they were to be back at school and seeing their friends. It is such a good reminder that schools are not just about academic success, they are also about emotional wellbeing and positive relationships are paramount to this. Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) The pillars of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness are some of the attitudes we have been focusing on throughout COVID-19 and our return to school. Emotional Literacy is also another skill we have been working on developing.

Gratitude Paying attention to the things that we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise this by noticing the positives that exist around us. Empathy Putting ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practice this through being kind and compassionate towards other people. Mindfulness Our ability to be calm and present at any given moment. We practice this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time. This could be our breathing, completing a colouring sheet or noticing the noises we can hear. Emotional Literacy Our ability to label our emotions as we experience them. Labelling our emotions helps us to manage our emotions (soften negative emotions and find positive emotions). We practice this by labelling our emotions as we experience different parts of our day. GEM Chat These daily questions have been developed to help families practise the GEM principles. They are a great way to facilitate positive conversations as your family shares a meal either in the morning, afternoon or evening or at a time that works best. Check out some great GEM CHAT questions below: Gratitude Questions
What were three things that went well for you today?
Who is someone you feel really grateful for today? Tell us why.
What is it about our home that makes it our home/special family place?
What is something you are looking forward to tomorrow?
Empathy Questions
Who is someone you know who may be experiencing some difficulty currently? What could we do for them as a family?
Remember someone who has done something kind for you recently. What did they do for you?
Say something kind to someone in your home
Mindfulness Questions
How did you practice mindfulness today? These are things like meditation, puzzles, spot the difference, colouring.
What mindfulness activity are you going to do tomorrow?
What is your favourite mindfulness activity?
How do you feel after you do a mindfulness activity?
Emotional Literacy Questions
Remember a time when you felt really happy. What made you feel this way?
Remember a time when you felt really sad. What made you feel this way? How did you turn your mood around?
Remember a time when you felt really excited. How did this make your body feel? For example, alert, energetic, trouble sleeping
Remember a time when you felt really anxious. How did this make your body feel? For example, increased heart rate, sweating, trouble sleeping, butterflies. What did you do to cope with feeling this way?

Louisa Frost (Assistant Principal) It has been great to have all the students back at school with our return to full time face to face teaching. I know in my class the students have really enjoyed real life contact with all
of their friends. It has also been impressive to see how easily they have adapted to the new cleaning routines etc. that we have put in place. One of the things I enjoyed about remote learning was the regular contact I was having with parents. Having pro-active parent, teacher relationships is something I hope we continue to have as a school. Therefore if you have any concerns or questions about what is happening here please don't hesitate to contact myself or your child's teacher. I hope you all continue to stay safe and well.

Secondary News Jean Duma (Head Teacher) Welcome back to School!! It has been wonderful to see all of our Secondary students back at school full-time. The last 11 weeks have been a
whirlwind of changes and upheaval both globally, nationally and for us here at Tooleybuc Central School. A huge vote of thanks to our students, parents, school staff and the wider TCS community for the support you have given each other throughout this time. Transitioning back to full-time face-to-face lessons is not without its own challenges and restrictions, but our students and school staff have taken this in their stride to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment continues. Our Stage 6 students have had the opportunity this fortnight to participate in the ‘HSC & Beyond Virtual Careers Expo’ presented by InspirEd. There were a number of HSC course specific sessions as well as sessions from a number of universities and guest speakers. Stage 6 students will have an opportunity to participate in several other HSC subject specific study sessions including UNSW Winter Gateway (July holidays), Aurora Study Days (Mathematics, English & Physics) and ACHPER Study Days (PDHPE). We hope all Stage 6 students attend these sessions to provide further support and resources for their HSC exams.

Careers Kim Morton (Careers Teacher) Senior students are being
given many opportunities to
watch seminars and participate
in online VC’s due to many
career events and open days being cancelled.
Some of those available are listed below. It is
advisable to check the website as some of these
events are changed daily.
In addition as the TIS Tour has been cancelled
that all Year 11/12 students traditionally attend in
Swan Hill they are offering a range of seminars.
Miss Duma will ensure all students in Year 12
watch these in order to understand the process in
applying for uni and also the options students
have available with the completion of their final
year of study. Last week Yr. 12 students
participated in the HSC and Beyond Virtual
Career Expo run through InspirED which was a
valuable source of information.
In addition both Job Jump and Career tools are
posting up some great information and
suggestions to Senior students so it is advisable
students are regularly checking these websites.
For those students who are hoping to gain
employment after school I strongly advise getting
their resume up to date.

Macquarie University - Entry Navigator Everyone comes to university on an ATAR.
Right? No, not with Macquarie Entry. ATAR is just
one of the factors we use to determine your
suitability for study. It’s true that your ATAR rank
can be a useful factor of your chances for
success in a specific course. But it’s equally true
that there are other factors we can use to assess
your suitability. That’s why we have 11 different
admission pathways to Macquarie; ten of these
assess your suitability on more than a selection
ranking based on your raw ATAR or on your
ATAR plus adjustment factors providing additional
points.

New technologies taking over the modern tradie’s toolbox
Tech that combines real world with computer generated images – like Microsoft’s wearable HoloLens – are starting to be employed by building designers, architects and painters to allow clients to interact in a realistic way with a space before making concrete design-based decisions. They’re serious game-changers at IKEA, where
customers can place products true-to-size in a space by downloading their app. In construction jobs, the same tech is creeping in to test structural changes onsite before they’re implemented. https://careerswithstem.com.au/the-new-tech-

the academic treadmill and consider your goals
before diving in. There are so many benefits to
taking a gap year - our volunteers gain
independence, confidence, career experience,
and cultural awareness while abroad.
Volunteering can really give you an edge before
and after university by boosting your CV in the
process.

volunteering organisations, supporting around
1000 young people globally every year. As a non-

effective and are transparent about all costs
involved, while providing comprehensive support
throughout the process. After 45 years of global
experience, we think we've got a pretty good thing

NCSS applications will be accepted from students who will complete Year 11 in 2019, and from exceptionally gifted Year 10 students.
