Conestoga College
On May 30, Conestoga’s School of Trades & Appren�ceship hosted its third annual Awards Presenta�onand Barbeque in the Roofing Centre at the Waterloo Campus. More than 300 guests including businessowners, industry professionals, faculty and family members watched as 110 awards valued at more than$49,000 in total were presented to students in mo�ve power, construc�on, industrial and service programs.
Guests enjoyed a barbecue a�er the awards presenta�on that included hamburgers donated from GrandRiver Foods and desserts prepared by Conestoga’s Cook 1 appren�ces. Thanks to Altruck Interna�onalfor providing a Tractor, Toromont CAT for providing a Tractor and Grader and Challenger Motor Freightfor providing a Tractor Trailer for display. Thanks also to the Automo�ve Faculty from the Guelph Campus for bringing the Conestoga Mustang.
Congratula�ons to the many award recipients for their achievements this past year and thank you to theindustry partners and donors for their contribu�ons to the students’ success. Special thanks to all of theTrades & Appren�ceship faculty and staff for their support in making this event such a great success.
The School of Trades & Appren�ceship is the centre of appren�ceship and skills training in Canada’sTechnology Triangle. Conestoga provides a comprehensive array of programs in Construc�on, Electrical,Metal Cu�ng, Industrial Maintenance, Welding & Fabrica�ng, Mo�ve Power and Cabinet Making in response to the needs of industry, and the growth in our local economy.

Two recipients from Conestoga's Renova�on Technician program are:

The Make It Right® Scholarships are $1500each and are awarded to students who arejudged by The Holmes Founda�on to havecombined academic excellence with a commitment to a career in residen�al construc�on or renova�on.
The Holmes Founda�on’s Make It Right® Scholarships are designed to encouragethese students to complete their academictraining and pursue a career in the residen�al construc�on industry.

This winter semester will see us with all four semesters of the HRAC Technician program here simultaneously including some construc�on techniques classes. Then, in the spring our first group of students will graduate from the HRAC Technician program.
Our HRAC programhas been growing allthe while with newwork sta�ons and lab ac�vi�es con�nuallybeing added, makingour labs much more effec�ve and progressively leadingthe way amongst ourpeers.
There have been many complimentsduring tours of the facility bolstering our pride and commitment to keepus at the leading edge of HRAC educa�on.

Appren�ceship training starts in JanuaryDo you have plant employees in need of upgrading?
Have they expressed a willingness to advance their career and contribute more?
By training as an appren�ce and then becoming a Process Operator Food Manufacturing journey person, they can! The Ins�tute of Food Processing Technology (IFPT) at Conestoga College in Cambridge will be offering Level 1 of the Process Operator Food Manufacturing Appren�ceship program beginning in January.
Online training for Level 1 will begin January 7, 2013. The appren�ceship program consists of three levels of college training(300 hours of in class and on line delivery) combined with 4000 hours of on the job experience. Areas covered through all threelevels of the appren�ceship include food safety and security, electrical and instrumenta�on techniques, food manufacturingand the environment, mechanical techniques, communica�on and computer skills and con�nuous quality improvement.

Third Annual Chairs’ Cup Golf TournamentThe third annual Chairs' Cup Golf Tournament was held on June 22nd at the Conestoga Golf and Country Club. Over 100 people a�ended the tournament this year all of whom indicated that they had a great day of golf, food and social networking and are looking forward to next year. Those of you who were not able to a�end, we look forward to seeing youin the spring of 2013!
Thanks to all of you this year's Chairs’ Cup was a resounding success raising in excess of $7000.00 in scholarship funding.We are sure that the students who receive the scholarship awards will appreciate your contribu�on.

The College of Trades
In 2009, legisla�on was passed to establish the Ontario College of Trades, a regulatory body that will modernize the province's appren�ceship and skilled trades system. The College will encourage more people to work in the trades and help the system be�erserve employers, skilled tradespeople, appren�ces and consumers. The College will be implemented in phases, but under the College of Trades and Appren�ceship Act the college will have the mandate and powers to regulate all approved trades in Ontario,and will perform standard regulatory func�ons such as issuing licenses and cer�ficates of membership, se�ng standards for training and cer�fica�on, and reviewing the journeyperson to appren�ceship ra�os. New Appren�ceship Program
The Ministry has introduced a new appren�ceship for Gas Technician. A Gas Technician is a person who works on gas-fired appliances and combus�on air systems up to and including 400,000 BTUH by:
• Preparing for installa�on, service or maintenance of gas-fired appliances;• Si�ng gas-fired appliances;• Installing ven�ng and combus�on air systems;• Installing piping/tubing and components;• Connec�ng appliance to u�lity distribu�on systems;• Installing appliance electrical components;• Commissioning gas-fired systems; and Maintaining control systems

• A Gas Technician appren�ceship includes a benchmark of 5,400 on-the-job hours and 720 hours of in-school training • Grade 12 or equivalent is required to be registered as an appren�ce in the trade• At comple�on of appren�ceship training, Cer�ficate of Appren�ceship (C of A) holders may apply to the Technical
Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) for examina�on and cer�fica�on as a Gas Technician 2 (G2)

We have been very busy with Pre-Appren�ceship programs in 2012!! These programs are funded by the Government of Ontario toallow individuals the opportunity to learn a trade. We had the opportunity to offer the following programs:
Commercial Vehicle and Equipment: Guelph CampusThis program was a combina�on of Truck & Coach Technician and Heavy Equipment Technician theory and prac�cal. The programincluded common core appren�ceship in-class training for Commercial Vehicles.
General Machinist: Doon Campus This program included Trade Mathema�cs, Introduc�on to Engineering Drawings and Layout, Machine and Techniques Theory,Machine Prac�ce and Health and Safety as well as common core appren�ceship in-class training for Precision Machining.

Women in Skilled Trades - General Carpentry: Waterloo CampusStudents in the 10th Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) program started school on September 17th. We have 25 women in class and excited about learning a new set of skills. As in other pre-appren�ceships, WIST students take introductory courses in carpentryand construc�on and also par�cipate in Level 1 appren�ceship training for carpentry including Health and Safety, Hand and PowerTools, Construc�on Math, Print Reading and Specifica�ons and Codes.
WIST students are finished in-school training on April 12th, 2013 and will be searching for a 10 week work placement opportunity.

The Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Associa�on of Equipment Dealers (CAED) presented their recent Power Breakfast Series onOctober 25th at our Centre of Excellence in Mo�ve Power Trades campus in Guelph: “The Future of our Industry – An Educa�onalUpdate”. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Toromont CAT, who partnered with the CAED and host college, Conestoga tooffer this valuable industry informa�on session.
It was an opportunity for our partners in the heavy equipment industry to learn relevant and interes�ng updates from the CAEDeduca�onal partners as well as tour the updated mo�ve power facili�es at the Guelph campus.
Representa�ves from Centennial College, Bear Creek Secondary School in Barrie as well as Conestoga College relayed updates onnew programming, partnerships and innova�ve approaches. In addi�on, Jessica Steffler, Career Promo�ons Director for the Ontario Civil Construc�on Careers Ins�tute (OCCCI) profiled her efforts in encouraging young people to consider a career in theheavy construc�on industry.

The College Sector Commi�ee (CSC) is pleased to announce that star�ng September 24,2012 that two assessments, ACE Essen�al Skills Assessment (ACE ES) and Essen�al Skillsfor Ontario’s Tradespeople (ESOT) available on the Essen�al Skills websites, now providestudent reports both on the HRSDC 5-level and 0 to 500 point scoring scales.
CSC launched two Essen�al Skills websites in 2011 – www.ace.essen�alskillsgroup.comand www.csc.essen�alskillsgroup.com. Both offer integrated Essen�al Skills tes�ng andskill development resources customized for individuals on employment, appren�ceshipand postsecondary paths. The assessments are the result of a partnership between theCSC and Essen�al Skills Group Inc. Both assessments are hosted by the Essen�al SkillsGroup Inc., a na�onal leader in innova�ve Essen�al Skills solu�ons.

UpdateThis year School College Work Ini�a�ve(SCWI), Grand Connec�ons Team hasincreased student enrollment in the Dual
Credit Programs delivered at ConestogaCollege. We con�nually work with ourcommunity partners to provide manylearning opportuni�es to individuals. Wepromote student success and pathways topost-secondary educa�on. Conestoga College offers many of these pathwaysthrough programs in trades and appren�ceship dual credits. This year dualcredit courses are being offered in Construc�on, Industrial/Manufacturing,Mo�ve Power, and Service sectors. Delivered at Conestoga campuses as wellas some of our more remote high schools,these programs will enhance skills, opendoors, create opportuni�es and heightenawareness in the trades area for many individuals.
Again, SCWI is working with Conestogatrades faculty and staff to offer many experien�al days “Explore Your Future” tohigh school and Grade 8 students. Students come to the College, a�endworkshops, giving them a hands on experience in the different trade areas.These workshops encourage students toconsider technology courses in high schooland college or appren�ceship programs inthe future.

This free on-line tool is an excellent resource for individuals entering appren�ceship or those already in process, Essen�al Skills for Ontario
Tradespeople. This one hour on-line self-directed assessment related to a par�cular trade will also provide a report at the end of the assessment and
directs the student/appren�ce to on-line resources as well as college academic upgrading support that may help them be�er succeed in school.

Spec Mix Bricklayer 500For the fi�h consecu�ve year, Conestoga hosted the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500, amasonry compe��on open to teams from across the region. This year, a total of12 teams turned out to compete for the $3,000 top prize and an opportunity toadvance to the World of Concrete Expo in Las Vegas next January. Students fromthe Brick and Stone Mason Appren�ceship program, as well as the Masonry Fundamentals program, volunteered at the event, assis�ng with everything from
mixing concrete to ensuring the work environment was safe for compe�tors. According toprogram coordinator ReneLetoile, the annual eventhelps Conestoga maintainclose �es with industry andprovides opportuni�es forstudents to network withprospec�ve employers.
