From Our Founder:

Since the founding of Tools for Working Wood in 1999, our work has been informed by historic catalogues from the 19th and early 20th centuries. These catalogues were filled with lush engravings, artistry, and terse, somewhat obscure product descriptions. We have used a similar style in this catalogue for three reasons: as a tribute to our predecessors, as a technical challenge to produce artwork that does this style justice, and because it’s fun.

This catalogue, which contains just a small selection of the tools we stock, is like our line of Gramercy Tools: contemporary, but inspired by the classics.

We have also included some selections from the 1902-1903 volume of Work. A British weekly magazine, Work was a major source of how-to and do-it-yourself information for early 20th-century crafts. One of its editors, Paul Hasluck, was famously responsible for editing some of the finest books on handicrafts ever written, including "Carpentry and Joinery Illustrated,” which we reprinted in 2010 under our wholesale brand, Brooklyn Tool & Craft.

Hammers are as commonly named for their region of

manufacture as for their purpose. These hammers,

having been designed for fine use, are manufactured

in Kings County by Gramercy and so bear that

name— Kings County being the English

name for the borough of

Brooklyn.

A thoroughly practical tool

for hammering nails in wood,

&c., these hammers are light, compact, made

from the highest-quality materials, properly

hardened to resist wear and are adorned with

hand-filed details. The hickory handles thin at

the waist for reduced fatigue. The hammer head

is differentially hardened, and thusly tough at

the eye and resistant to scratches on the face

and peen.

Unlike flat-faced hammers that cause glancing

blows, dented work, and crooked nails, our

hammers have a domed face. A domed face

will drive nails flush without denting the work,

saving time and material. For small brads and

sprigs, the hammer’s peen can slip between the

thumb and forefinger to start the fastener.

Gramercy hammers are specially suited and

recommended for hammering hardened cut

nails. Furnished with printed cotton sack.

Manufactured in the United States, English-

made hammer wedge except’d.

Orders received prior to the new year, will be

charged at the manufacturers discounted rate

All Gramercy backsaws use carbon spring steel which ensures a larger number of cuts between filings,

greater efficiency, and a considerable increase in output per saw. Hammer-set and hand-filed teeth enable

a smooth, keen kerf to be cut in wood. Backs are folded and machined brass, hand polished. Handles

Tool for Purfling Violins—T. S. (Leeds) writes:— “Please state where a purfling tool as used for violin making can be obtained. Or give instructions for making such a tool.”

— A good purfling tool can be purchased from C. Panton, & Son, 24, Miller Street, Glasgow, for about 12s. 6d. To make a purfling tool, take a piece of hardwood about 4 in. long, 1½ in. broad, and ¾ in. thick,

and shape it as Figs. 1 and 2. The cutter A may be made from a piece of steel about 2 in. long cut from a joiner’s nail-punch. File the steel parallel, and with a thin ward file cut a groove about ⅛ in. deep in one end, forming a double cutter as Fig. 3, taking care that the over-all size is just the width of the purfling. A side view of the end is circular as shown by dotted lines. The cutter should be filed up sharp with a fine file, but will cut cleaner and keep its edge longer if tempered and set up with a thin, slip of oilstone. After the double cut (which must be done with a firm hand) is made all round the violin tables, the groove is cleaned out with a narrow chisel or a sharp bradawl. A HOME-MADE TOBOGGAN. By N. LATTEY. THE term “toboggan” may include the “coaster,” a simple form of horseless sleigh, which can be put together with a few pieces of rough board and nails, as illustrated in Fig. 1. An improved coaster of the same pattern may be evolved by shaping and planing the runners, cross-seat, and foot-rail, and providing hand-holes. Additional ease in running may be secured by fixing on the under edges of the runners strips of half-round or D-shaped iron as shoes. Make these act as springs by bowing them slightly, the ends being turned over and firmly secured by long screws. Such a coaster, when intended for a single passenger, need not be more than 36 in. long and 15 in. wide, the runners, of 1-in. or l½-in. wood, being about 6 in. deep. The seat and foot-rail should be let into notches, as shown in Fig. 1 (preferably dovetailed), and held by stout screws. Steering must be accomplished by means of the feet, and a little practice will soon make this easy. For two or more persons the coaster need only be lengthened, the hindermost passenger steering with a pole held across his knees after the manner of a tight-rope walker, a touch on the ground with either end deflecting the course of the coaster to one side or other of the track. A short length of rope attached to the centre of the foot-rail will be found handy for dragging the coaster up the hill after a descent.The usual form of Canadian toboggan consists merely of three 6-in. by 1-in. boards, 7 ft. or 8 ft. long, and held together side by side by cross pieces 2 in. wide and 1 in. thick, screwed on about 1 ft. apart and leaving about 15 in. of the longitudinal boards at one end to curl up (see Fig. 2). The curling up may be managed by soaking the ends of the boards in boiling water until they are soft enough to be bent, when they should be held in position with cord. A strip of 1-in. by 1-in. wood roughly rounded and placed along the cross pieces from end to end on the outer edges of the sleigh will serve as rails by which to hold on. The steering in this case must be done in the same way as in that of the coaster.

A much more satisfactory and steerable toboggan (Fig. 3) may be made as follows :—Procure a board A (Fig. 4), 6 ft. long, 18 in. wide, and 1 in. or 1¼ in. thick, and two cross pieces B and c, one 3 in. by ¾ in. by 18 in. and the other 2½ in. by 1 in. by 18 in. Screw on the former 9 in. or 10 in. from the front end, and the other 5 in. or 6 in. from the opposite end of the large board. For the runners prepare four other pieces D of 1-in. board, 6 in. wide and 27 in. long, shaping them as shown with notches E, 1 in. by 2½ in. These carry cross pieces, 18 in. long, fitted and screwed so as to hold each pair of runners together. Over the front pair screw firmly to the cross pieces E a piece F of 1-in. board 15 in. by 18 in. long. To the under side of the rear cross piece screw two (or, better still, three) strong iron door-hinges N, and fix the free flaps as shown. Now place the whole in position on the floor, and, having the sides of the front pair of runners flush with those of the top board, and the cross piece B in the centre of the board F, bore a ¾-in. or 1-in. hole right through A, B, and F, exactly in the middle. Through this pass a round-headed bolt fitted with two washers, a nut H, and lock nut J, and bolt up tight enough to allow the front bogie to move freely without too much play; then tighten up the lock nut J. A foot-rail M and screw-eyes at K and L (of course at both sides), with strings crossed from L and leading to the handles, will complete the toboggan. An india-rubber door-stop might, however, be screwed on at O to take any undue stress off the hinges in case of a very rough track. A short chain stay at each side is also desirable. As will be obvious, the steering can be easily done by means of the crossed cords, and feet outstretched in front will act as brakes when necessary.The hingeing at the rear end makes this form of toboggan almost flexible and very easy in running, even in unfavourable circumstances. Here, again, dovetailing the joints and fixing on spring shoes will be found decided improvements. The dimensions can likewise be varied to meet requirements, and the coat or two of paint would act as a preservative.

A CARPENTER’S PORTABLE BENCHBY A.E.R.

THE perspective view (Fig. 1) shows a bench that can be quickly taken apart or erected, and being in three primary portions, it is more readily handled than a bench of the folding type.The top is mortised to drop over tenons formed on the posts (Fig- 8), and is secured to the posts by wedges. It is made of three planks, the two outer ones being 11 in. by 1⅞ in., and the centre one being 12 in. by 1 in. rebated to fit grooves on the outer planks. Stout battens are screwed to the under side, the end battens abutting against the outsides of the posts (see Fig. 3). The posts are a fixture in pairs, but are joined longitudinally by two rails, with half dovetailed bare-faced tenons secured by wedges. The rails and wedges should be numbered to their respective places, and a hole bored in each wedge, so that, if necessary, they may be corded together to prevent loss during transit. The front rail has a double chamfer worked on its top edge to retain the sliding rack. The top edge of the rack fits in a groove under the top of the bench

as shown in section by Fig. 4.Two forms of vices are shown; each constitutes a part of the particular section to which it is attached, and in no way interferes with the dismantling of the bench. Fig. 5 shows the back cheek of the vice with the carrying nut; it is secured to the post with two stout coach screws. The runner guide extends half-way along the lower rail, a strip 3½ in. by ½ in. being attached to the rail, as the latter does not come f lush with the post (see Fig. 6). The vice shown by Figs. 9 and 10 requires the addition of a side plank, 1¾ in. by 6 in. or 7 in. deep, screwed to the top. It is secured at the back with blocks, more particularly near the vice, but of course kept clear of the screw and runner. A vice is sometimes fitted at the opposite diagonal. The wedges securing the top of the bench are shown projecting ½ in. or more above, merely to indicate their position more clearly. They should be f lush, excepting the one next to the vice, which may be used as a bench stop. The vice runners and wedges should be of some hard wood, such as beech, ash, or teak; the remainder of the bench can conveniently be constructed of deal.

This appliance is an automatic work holder which may

be applied to nearly any work surface between 1½ inch

and 4 inch thick. Adjustments can be made to the

workbench for other thicknesses; holes should be ¾

inch diameter.

Simple clamping with the holdfast is done by striking

with a wooden mallet. A strike from above tightens,

and a strike to the back loosens.
