This  Guide  was  originally  developed  for  a  webinar  we  hosted  for  tribal  procurement  staff.    Our  technical  advisors  for  the  project  were  Thor  Peterson,  of  Synthesis  Consultants,  and  Doug  Kennedy,  of  Pathway  Design  +  ConstrucJon.      Thor  and  Doug  developed  the  guide  by  first  conduc;ng  a  survey  of  green  building  experts  in  the  

Pacific  Northwest.    Their  goal  was  to  idenJfy  a  mix  of  durable,  healthy  and  affordable  building  materials,  products,  technologies.      The  results  of  their  survey  are  included  here,  and  can  help  you  make  procurement  choices  that      substanJally  improve  indoor  air  quality  and  occupant  health.

Suspected  carcinogen  and  known  irritant.  Look  for  exterior  grade  engineered  and  composite  wood  products  (“HUD-­‐approved,”  “Exposure  1”);  formaldehyde-­‐free  fiberglass  insulaJon  

Avoid:  1  Urea  formaldehyde  

Low  MERV  raJng,  1”  panel  (non-­‐pleated)  designs.  Fiberglass,  foam,  horsehair  or  hog’s  hair  all  should  be  avoided.    Can  cause  more  issues  than  they  fix  PS:  change  filters  regularly!  

Avoid:  2  Useless  furnace  filters  

Serves  as  a  “sink”  for  toxins  and  irritants.  Carpet  and  padding  can  be  VOC  emijers  themselves.  If  soc  surfaces  required,  consider  cork,  cleanable  area  rugs,  or  (last  resort)  low-­‐pile,  CRI  Green  Label  Plus  carpet
