When IT organizations migrate their data center to the cloud they are often able to reduce overall costs. Cost savings come from a reduction in real estate, power, and cooling costs but the most significant saving comes from the elimination of operational management costs. A transition from capital expenditure to operational costs also helps to reduce overall spending because IT organizations now only pay for the computing resources they need.

Organizations that need to establish their own data center or upgrade an existing data center are faced with a significant capital expenditure. If these organizations chose to migrate their data center to the cloud they could avoid this large capital expense and pay only for the resources that they need, when they need them.

When IT organizations migrate their data center to the cloud they no longer need to manage IT resources that are designed to meet peak demand. In fact they don’t even need to think about capacity planning. Because cloud resources are elastic, IT organizations can rely on a baseline level of computing resources that can rapidly scale to meet increas-ing or decreasing user demand.

Organizations place a lot of demands on IT and sometimes it is difficult to respond quickly to meet the needs of the business. With a cloud-based data center, IT organizations can rapidly deploy servers and storage when needed for a new project or for testing changes to existing applications. This agility improves IT productivity and can increase the pace of the whole organization.

REDUCE THE NUMBER OF IT VENDORS
Reducing the number of vendors is a goal of many IT organizations. Working with fewer suppliers can simplify administration and reduce overheads. When an IT organiza-tion runs its own data center it has to deal with server, storage, and network providers as well as VARs and possibly managed services vendors too. With a cloud-based data center this can be reduced to just one or two suppliers.

IT governance and overall operational management is simplified and often automated when IT organizations migrate their data center to the cloud. Cloud computing usage is tracked and detailed reports are created, enabling IT to bill departments only for the computing resources they use.

Organizations often express concerns about IT security in the cloud, but cloud-based data centers are often more secure than a company’s own in-house data center. This is because cloud service providers can put in place strong physical secu-rity measures and data is protected not only from those trying to steal it but also from equipment failure through digital security and disaster recovery systems. Cloud based data centers meet many security standards such as: SOC 1 Type 2 (formerly SAS-70), ISO 27001, PCI DSS, FISMA Moderate Compliant Controls, HIPAA & ITAR Compliant Architecture.
