Engineering. It was the first time when the university conducted post graduate training program. After the

national reunification, the university was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City University of Polytechnic as Saigon was

renamed to Ho Chi Minh City (according to the Decision 426/Ttg signed by The President of the Cabinet on

October 2, 1976). Being one of the three largest universities of technology in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City

University of Polytechnique has the mission of training engineers majoring in the fields of capital construction,

industry, resources exploration and exploitation, and environment preservation to provide a force of manpower

mainly for the southern areas of Vietnam.

Since 1981, HCMUT has expanded its scope into postgraduate training. In 1990, HCMUT opened the Master

degree training system. Actually, the postgraduate training in HCMUT has been focused since 1981.

According to decision 16/CP by The Prime Minister on January 17, 1995, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi

Minh City (VNU-HCM) was founded. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology became one among the 9

members of VNU-HCM and was renamed as University of Technology.

According to decision 15/2001/Q-TTG and decision 16/2001/Q-TTg by The Prime Minister on December 2,

2001, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City was reorganized with 3 members and Ho Chi Minh City

University of Technology gained back its traditional name as University of Polytechnic.

    Infrastructure

Ho Chi Minh University of Technology has two campuses: one is located in the inner of Ho Chi Minh City and

the other in the outskirts of the city. The former one has an area of 14.8 ha, of which address is 268 Ly Thuong

Kiet St., Dist.10, Ho Chi Minh City. The campus has 117 classrooms (14.479 m2), 96 laboratories (12.197 m2),

3 workshops (6.950 m2), and 1 library (1.145 m 2 for both undergraduate and graduate student). The latter

one, with an area of 26 ha, is located in Linh Trung Ward, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City. In May 2005, the

first building of the campus was started construction with a building area of 17.600 m2, totally costing 66 billions

VND. Besides the two campuses, HCMUT also has an inner city dormitory with an area of 1,4 ha. As the

dormitory was seriously downgraded, it has been torn down for the preparation of building a new one, for which

the expenditures are 101 billions VND (of which 50% self-funded by the university and 50% borrowed from the

    need-enhancing budget of HCM city).

The remarkable event of the past 5 years (from 20012005) is that, with the self-funded budget (from tuition

fees, science research and technology transfer and other training activities), HCMUT has been focusing onrebuilding an area of 26.128 m2 (increases 40% in comparison to that of 1995), upgrading classrooms,

laboratories, the library, of which total area is 7.670 m2 (increases 50% in comparison to that of 1995), investing

in equipment for training activities. All classrooms are equipped with projectors and computers, laboratories

with modern tools for training and science researching (worth 80 billions VND).

At HCMUT, a decent number of teaching and learning materials in various fields are available almost all of the

time. Among them, 55% (509 titles) are compiled by HCMUT professors. There are 277 titles of magazines

(191 foreign languages and 86 Vietnamese ones), 9460 titles with more than 36.555 books, 30 computers for

internet accessing and other types of materials such as scientific magazines in the library. The library is

invested with an annual budget of more than one billion VND in maintenance, learning materials, including

    printing curriculum for educational purposes.

    Academics

To fulfill the demands for manpower in industrial and technological majors in Vietnam, the university completed

the outcome and thorough academic programs for 34 undergraduate majors and 1 major in college program

following the ABET standards, but HCMUT has not been yet accredited. Although most students are advised to

follow the recommended studying schedules since they are already compressed, they are free to determine the

number of credits they take up to a fixed specific amount determined by the university each semester.

    Academic programs

The academic programs in HCMUT operate on a semester calendar from early August to mid May. They are

classified in seven types of educational programs:

    Formal and informal undergraduate education

    Postgraduate education

Cooperative and twinning program: This program offers students involved in two years to study at

HCMUT and the rest of the academic programs at the cooperative universities and institutions in others

    countries.

Education program for the gifted and talented: While studying at HCMUT, professors will recommend

prominent and prospective students to this class, usually at the end of the sophomore year.

PFIEV (Programme de Formation d'Ingnieurs d'Excellence au Vietnam) Program: HCMUT has

cooperated with France on this training program. Students when entering HCMUT can choose to follow

this type of program whose courses are mostly taught in French. Ones with strong academic progress will

be offered certifications recognized by Engineers Association of France to be able to practice in Europe.

Advanced Program: This is a national project that enables HCMUT to implement the training

organization system of Electrical and Electronics Sector, Department of Electrical and Engineering,

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. This program is highly focused on Electrical and

    Electronics major.

Hanoi University of Science and TechnologyHanoi University of Science and Technology (Abbreviated as HUST; Vietnamese: i h c Bch khoa H

N i , French: Institut Polytechnique de Hano, "Polytechnic University of Hanoi", "Hanoi University of

Technology (HUT)"), founded 1956, is the first and largest technical university in Vietnam.[1][2][3][4][5]

    History

After the communists took control of Hanoi in 1954 after the victory at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the Soviet

Union decided to help North Vietnam to build up a new technical university as a frame for university education

in Vietnam. The construction took about two years from the ground of an old campus of Indochina

University during the French colonial period. The building was the largest one at that time in Hanoi.

The university is the fifth oldest universities in Vietnam, after Indochina Medical College (1902), University of

Indochina(1904), cole Suprieure des Beaux-Arts de L'Indochine (1925) and Hanoi University of

Education (1951). It is the parent of many spin-off technical universities in Vietnam, including Hanoi University

of Civil Engineering, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Vietnam University of Water Resource, etc. After

the unification of Vietnam, many of its professors went to Ho Chi Minh City to rebuild Ho Chi Minh City

    University of Technology.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary technical university. It always ranks first in

technology training universities in Vietnam. [citation needed] Thousands of engineers have graduated from HUST and

are now serving in key industrial and scientific areas in Vietnam. Many of them hold important positions in the

    government.

    Facts and Figures

In 2007, the HUST staff consisted of 1950 people. Amongst them, there were 1192 in teaching staff, 394 in

    teaching-assistant and scientific research staff, 200 professors and associate-professors, 400 Ph.D. and D.S.c.

Currently, the number of students is about 40,000 making it the largest technical university in Vietnam. Despiteof the large pool of students, the passmark (in the national university entrant exam) of the university is among

the highest in Vietnam. HUST is well known in Vietnam for its selective students. For instance, in 2005 national

university entrant exam, more than half of perfect-score students came to HUST.

To further promote scientific research and training activities besides technology transfer to develop the

university as a research focused university, since May 2010 the universitys name in English had been changed

to Hanoi University of Science and Technology (abbreviated HUST). However, the universitys names in

Vietnamese and French remain the same as " i h c Bch khoa H N i" and "Institut Polytechnique de

    Hanoi" respectively.[6]

    Campus

HUST has one of the largest and most treed campus in Vietnam, just in the south center of Hanoi, looks out

onto the Park of Reunification. HUST's campus area is about 20 tens thousand m with 200 amphitheatres,

teaching rooms, halls and conference chambers. It also owns about 200 laboratories among which 8 national

key laboratories and 20 practical workshops. HUST has a large of complex for physical education and sport

activities including a standard stadium, an Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts, and international

standard sporting event hall (where the South East Asia Student Sports Festival is organized in 2006).

from around the world, and a range of different spaces to allow for different kinds of study.

The library features areas where discussion in small groups is encouraged. Other parts are designed for

teaching and instruction by librarians specially trained in different study programs. Librarians will also conduct

library tours to help new students make the best use of the latest facilities.

Many services offered across the university such as support to improve student learning skills will now be

accessible from within the library itself.
