The Regatta has been a highlight of the summer season in Torquay for over 200 years and was the first yachting regatta in the country to be granted royal patronage.
It is a pleasure on behalf of the officers, members and staff of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club to welcome you all here in 2019.
This brochure contains useful information together with details of the sailing events, catering, and social programme at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. I would like to thank the many local businesses who have supported the regatta both as sponsors and by advertising in this brochure. Their contribution is much valued and appreciated in the staging of this event.
We continue with our three day format over the Bank Holiday Weekend, with racing for IRC Yachts, Cruisers, Sportsboats, Junior Dinghies, Asymmetric and Non-Asymmetric Dinghies
The regatta will this year will be enhanced by the presence of the J/70 UK Class National Championships. Racing takes place on its own course area
and has attracted entries from top International J/70 sailors, keen to spend time in Torbay in preparation for the J/70 World Championships, the following week.
My thanks go to the many club members and volunteers who contribute so much to the success of the event. Our experienced, dedicated, and professional race management teams will ensure the best possible racing, and the shore side team will be on hand to assist with berthing, parking, and launching.
The English Riviera is a great place to be in August and competitors can be sure that you will enjoy a friendly atmosphere, cordial hospitality and great shoreside entertainment: featuring the Commodore’s Regatta welcome party on Friday evening, Gin and Cocktails on Saturday night and a Wild West Party night with our own Bucking Bronco on Sunday night.

Royal Torbay Yacht ClubThe Royal Torbay Yacht Club has been at the heart of sailing in Torbay for over 150 years, it is proud of its long and distinguished heritage and continues to move forward in meeting the demands of the modern day. The club offers a warm welcome to all visiting sailors, their guests and new members.
In March of this year the club were announced as Winners of the RYA Club of the Year Award 2019 with special recognition for its facilities improvement.
The club has recently introduced Stand Up Paddle boarding to its range of activities, holding a Paddleboard regatta in May and now offering SUP training courses. Our strong racing focus supports active Junior training through Squadron 13, TYST (Torbay Youth Sailing Trust) and as an RYA British Youth Sailing Recognised Club.
The RYA Training centre continues to expand the number and range of courses available and to train new instructors to cope with the growing demand. Through its Ladies Sailing Group, Cruising Group and recently formed Motorboat Section the club has an increasingly wide appeal whatever your boating interest.
The club maintains close links with other local clubs and marine based organisations, we are especially pleased to be working more closely with the Disabled Sailing Association where we share a common interest in training and in encouraging greater sailing participation.
Our splendid Grade 2 listed Victorian clubhouse sits proudly above the harbour and has over recent years undergone considerable refurbishment. The growing reputation of our restaurant No12@The Yacht Club and the magnificent Corinthian Room, recently decorated committee room and the newly refurbished function room on the second floor are rapidly establishing the club as a venue of choice for many and is home to our busy social programme. The members bar and terraced garden with panoramic views over Tor Bay are there for all to relax and enjoy.
The club has over many years established an enviable reputation for staging first class World, European and National Championships and we look forward to welcoming class associations for their championships in the coming years.

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club is proud to have be chosen to host the prestigeous J/70 World Championships 2019 and its volunteers are pulling out all the stops in staging this great event, set to be one of the top International sailing events being held in the UK this year. The club has a long and distinguished history of hosting major International Events and is looking forward to welcoming the J/70 Class at the end of August.
This championship will bring elite racing sailors from across the world to the top sailing destination of Torbay on the English Riviera. Teams from 23 countries will be competing and entrants include multiple World Champions, Olympians and previous winners of both the J/70 European and World Championships.
J/70 events in Torquay will start with the UK National Championships being held as part of the Torbay Royal Regatta from August 24th to 26th.
Teams will be arriving in Torbay from August 22nd for those competing in the National Championships and from August 29th for the World Championships. Three days of preparation, measurement and inspection will be followed by six days of racing with 14 races scheduledThe formal Opening Ceremony will take place on Haldon Pier at 19.00
on Sunday 1st September with the Britannia Royal Naval College Volunteer Band and Junior Yacht Club members carrying country flags adding something special to the occasion.The J/70 International Class Association is recognised by World Sailing, with active fleets in 25 countries. The J/70 worldwide fleet has grown to over 1,700 boats, attracting some of the most talented sailors in the world and helping to spark the growth of numerous sailing leagues across Europe. Torbay is a world-renowned sailing venue hosting America’s Cup trials in the 1930’s, sailing events of the 1948 Olympics, the UK stopover for La Solitaire de Figaro in 2015 and numerous World, European and National Championships.
The hosting of the J/70 World Championships is real achievement for the club and the town, it will place itself in Torquay’s maritime history as one of the top events ever held in the bay.
