About the Torchbearers
The Free National Movement Torchbearers Association was established in 1972
when the late Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield served as its leader. It was established
with the intention of providing political and social interaction for its young mem-bers, and to act as a training ground for those seeking to hold office in the party, or
seeking political office in the nation. The success of this Association is evident:
over the years, presidents and officers of the Torchbearers Association have moved
up the political ladder to become officers of the national party, Senators, Members
of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers.
In a society where the youth of our nation have represented the swing vote during
the past three elections, the role that Torchbearers play has become even more sig-
nificant to the working of our party. Thus, Torchbearers is that vehicle through
which the party can once again garner the support and confidence of the young
voter. The Torchbearers Association speaks loudly and clearly on issues relating to youth and youth development in our Bahamas.
The Torchbearers Association is prepared to listen to the young voters in an effort
to get a clear understanding of the issues that concern them most, and of the direc-
tion they would like to see The Bahamas go in the area of youth development. The
Torchbearers Association will canvass the various constituencies in an effort to
determine what the youth of our nation are thinking, and to win their support. The
Torchbearers Association will set up Torchbearers branch associations so that the
FNM will have a constant presence, increase the membership of Torchbearers and
attract more persons to the FNM. In this effort not only should we target those ex-
isting young voters, but also those future voters who are now between the ages of
13 and 17, because it is these voters who will play an important role in determining the party that will govern The Bahamas in future elections.
The Torchbearers Youth Association meets on the 1st and 4th Wednesday in every
month. Meetings are held at the FNM Headquarters on Mackey Street at 7:30 p.m.

presents party with a plaque
celebrating 40 years
Former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham urged members of the Free National
Movement (FNM) to rededicate themselves to improving the quality of life and the
future needs of the Bahamian people. “This great FNM remains eternally vigilant
in advancing The Bahamas and its people, as we continue the work of transform-ing The Bahamas, its infrastructure, its
education, its health care, its legal and
justice system and its economy,” said
Ingraham.
The former prime minister’s comments
came yesterday as he and the FNM cele-
brated the 40th anniversary of the found-
ing of the party, at Voice of Deliverance
Ministries on Malcolm Way. Ingraham
told the party’s officers and members that the anniversary is a time for renewal. “This 40th anniversary is a time to renew the values to which our party was
founded, including transparent, accountable and good governance,” said Ingra-
ham. “The FNM is committed to a bal-
ance of personal and social responsibility.
We believe that giving back and commu-
nity service are at the heart of good and
active citizenship. Community demands
civility and civil society, shared sacrifices
and shared responsibility. We see govern-
ment as a vehicle - it is not an end in it-self,” said Ingraham.
