St. Nicholas of Bari Catholic School Tessellation
The creation of the tessellation representing St. Nicholas of Bari Catholic School was a
collaborative and creative endeavour. The initial stage of our project consisted of
brainstorming ideas around how we could represent our school and community using images,
words, logos, etc. The grade seven students volunteered numerous ideas and created small
tessellation samples to demonstrate what could be included in the overall design. We
narrowed the ideas presented by focusing on the message we wanted our tessellation to
convey. The goal was to give the viewer a sense of what our school is all about, inside and out.
We decided to include a drawing of our school, which was created by a grade seven student,
and a drawing of St. Nicholas of Bari, created by a former student. This depiction of our school
and the representation of our patron saint gives the viewer historical information about the
physical building and the school’s origin. The students wanted to also express the emotional
aspect of our school in our tessellation. They wanted to convey the feeling of being at St.
Nicholas of Bari student. Students decided to accomplish this using descriptive words and
colour. We selected words that characterize the people in the building and represent our
school community. The colour yellow was chosen because of its warmth and luminous quality.
The idea was that being at St. Nicholas of Bari is like being touched by a warm bright ray of
sunshine. We also decided to use different fonts in our tessellation to represent the various
heritages, traditions and innovation that can be found at St. Nicholas of Bari. The final product
is a creation which depicts our school in a manner put forth by students and staff and is meant
to give insight as to what it feels like to be a part of such a great school community!
