Chairman’s Weekend Away Leaving Nerang at 9.30 am on a beautiful late winter/early spring morning we headed off on our three day trip via Canungra to our customary ‘pit stop’ at Beaudesert. After stretching our legs we then travelled on through Boonah to the Cunningham Highway before stopping at Aratula for lunch. The hosts at the BP Roadhouse welcomed us in and put on a wonderful spread of sandwiches for lunch, followed up by a choice of home-made cakes and sweetmeats together with tea or coffee to our choice. Suitably reinforced for our continuing journey, we then headed off west up Cunninghams Gap towards Warwick. On the way, rounding a corner we came upon two B -Double trucks stopped on the hill on the other side of the road, and with the hill and bend together it posed a bit of a safety risk. However we navigated this safely and continued on to the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre in Warwick where we were given a guided tour of displays showing the various champions of this activity. Most members thought the participants in these events must be crazy to take such risks! Leaving the Heritage Centre we then made our way to the Coachmans Motel nearby which was our accommodation for the weekend. After booking in and freshening up, most of us congregated in Chairman Terry and Di’s room for pre-dinner drinks and a natter before dinner. The ladies brought along a selection of cheese, dips and biscuits. It was a most congenial afternoon. Dinner was served in the motel dining room which was fully booked for the evening. The following morning after breakfast we headed off for a tour of the Abbey of the Roses. This was an imposing sandstone building in the heart of Warwick currently used as a special function centre and B&B. It has a long and interesting history, being built in stages and originally a convent then a girls school. The present owner gave us a guided tour and desribed the work he had done over the years to resrore it to its current condition. Leaving the Abbey the next stop was Clifton where we enjoyed a delightful Irish stew at O’Shanleys Irish pub. For the boys amongst us we were able to view a group of beautifully restored vintage motorcycles in an adjacent garage, together with showcases of memorabilia. Heading back to Warwick we then visited Pringle Cottage, built and lived in by the stonemason who built the Abbey of the Roses in the 1890s. The cottage and associated buildings now house a large collection of historical artifacts, from farm machinery to schoolroom items and toys and including a fully fledged printing press – Ray Howlett went weak at the knees when he saw the set-up and was happy to give a talk to all on how it worked. Other items included historical clothes and household items from the 19th and early 20th Century. It was then back to the motel for a few quick drinks and nibblies and then on to dinner. Following breakfast on Sunday we packed ready for the trip home. Most of the group stayed in convoy leaving Warwick and we had a delightful drive through the country on back roads to Leslie Lake and Dam where we did a bit of sightseeing. We then headed off to join the Cunningham Highway and Cunninghams Gap. We were fortunate not leaving later as a bushfire was threatening the road on the way down the mountain and the bush fire brigade was on the way and would probably have closed the road for a short time. On the way home members stopped again at the BP Roadhouse for lunch before heading home. It was great weekend away with 24 members participating and thanks go to Terry and Di Cooper for their efforts in arranging it.
Ed. Thank You To Debbie Duncan for some of the photos of the Chairman’s Weekend Away.
