Torrey Honors Institute
M
Become Part of a Movement Far Greater Than Yourself
Our society is marked by fragmentation. It is often difficult to see where a person’s
ideas inform his real life or his faith informs his intellect. Torrey does not aim to
merely graduate smart students, rather, students whose understanding inspires
them to live well. A Torrey education promotes the integration of knowledge,
feeling, and action through the pursuit of goodness, truth, and beauty.
TThe Torrey Honors Institute provides a Christian
liberal arts education aimed at transforming the
hearts and minds of men and women committed
to the cause of Christ in the twenty-first century.
Through the recovery and renewal of the nearly
lost arts of learning, we seek to equip students to
become leaders and to make an impact on the
world for the Lord Jesus Christ.
Become a Whole Soul
“My Torrey education provided a moral anchor that has proved indispensable when
dealing with issues of medical ethics. The moral foundation that
Christianity instilled in me and that Torrey reinforced and developed
has guided me through these troubled waters.”
Ryan H. nicHolas, class of 2001 cHicago Medical scHool student
“Torrey has given me a depth and breadth of historical and theological understanding that is, I believe,
unparalleled in any undergraduate degree. Having been acquainted with such a vast quantity of
literature, I feel confident approaching subjects that would otherwise be inaccessible.”
dan scHieRling class of 2002

TThe Torrey student reads seminal works of Western civilization and the Christian
tradition, spanning from Homer to C.S. Lewis. We read these books to gain a deeper
understanding of ourselves, our world, and, finally, our Creator. We read books
whose concerns are the most significant aspects of human experience: love, hope,
law, virtue, faith, community, suffering, sin, grace, death, and resurrection.
Our curriculum is essentially interdisciplinary. Since knowledge is not exclusively
found in any one of the sciences, we seek it in philosophy, literature, history, and
theology.
Our curriculum uniquely emphasizes a rigorous study of the Scriptures and
important texts of the Christian theological tradition. We are confident that the
Word of God speaks into this world with authority by pointing us to Christ, who is
the Truth.

TThe sixty-four units you take in the Torrey
Honors Institute satisfy Biola’s general education
requirements in the liberal arts, Bible, and theology.
Torrey students still take one of Biola’s majors,
thereby receiving both the foundations of the Torrey
education and a specialization in their chosen
professional field.
Torrey has admissions requirements beyond those
of Biola. In general, Torrey students come from the
top ten percent of Biola applicants. You can learn

T“Torrey has kindled a revolution in my mind and my heart. I have come to a
more rich and full understanding of and love for Jesus Christ not only through my studies, but more importantly through the encouragement, support and challenge of
the community.”
Rebecca Jewell class of 2003
The Torrey program is, at its core, a conversation, extended over four years. You and a group of classmates spend your time in Torrey together becoming a learning community that takes ownership of its education. Sharing this intellectual journey with friends creates trust and accountability, which benefit learning immeasurably.
Torrey faculty assume the role of tutor in the classroom. Tutors do not lecture, but carefully lead student dialogue toward understanding. And the relationship does not end there. Outside the classroom tutors are mentors, concerned with your personal growth in wisdom and character.
Students have a variety of opportunities to extend their classroom learning experience: online resources, lectures, studies abroad, mission trips, music and theater performances, and events at faculty homes.
