Tory Immigration Minister Mark Harper has denied claims by anti-racism campaigner Doreen Lawrencethat controversial immigration spot checks were linked to peoples colour.

Mr Harper sought to defuse a growing storm over the checks by also insisting they were not random butbased on specific intelligence.

He also revealed that so far 17 people had been arrested on suspicion at two London Undergroundstations but was unable to say how many in total had been stopped.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is now investigating the checks for possible discrimination.

Last week, Doreen Lawrence, mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence and who is now aLabour peer in recognition of her fight against racism, said she thought racial profiling was involved inthe checks.

But Mr Harper insisted: We werent stopping people based on their race or their ethnicity. We were onlystopping people and questioning them where we had a reasonable suspicion that they were animmigration offender.

He also said no ethnic details about people questioned were recorded, with officers noting only peoplesnationality, name and date of birth.

Mr Harper told BBC radio: We are not carrying out random checks of people in the street and askingpeople to show their papers. Thats absolutely not what we are doing.

Denying any racial profiling, Mr Harper said: Its about how they behave, not what they look like. Its notabout their appearance or their race or their ethnicity.

Data on the numbers stopped for questioning will be released in due course, said Mr Harper.

Labour spokesman Chris Bryant has demanded the release of statistics on the number and ethnicbackground of people stopped and accused Ministers of whipping up a moral panic over immigration for

electoral purposes.

He said: If it feels as if what is basically happening is that they are going to some parts of the countryand stopping every person with a black face, then that is totally unacceptable.

The checks are l ikely to be aimed at non white people given a large of amount of illegal imm igrants are from Africa & the

sub Asian continents. This is not racist just fact. If these people aren't stopped how will we ever get rid of them? Her

I totally agree with the comment of Tory Immigration Minister Mark Harper. One would have thought with all her ins ight to

the problems Baroness Doreen Lawrence would not have made such a ridiculous comment as she has. We have seen

the televis ion programme of Border Agency staff manning railway stations and they simply know by instinct and training

who to stop. Trust Chris Bryant to pop up for the publicity. They and others should s imply remain quiet and let the

authorities do their job as they are doing, correctly and efficiently.

I both agree and dis agree with her. The checks are not meant to be racially motivated and the officers are not targeting

people based on race, but for crying out loud race is just the first way they can identify who is who, it's immigration so

definitely they won't be going after pure whites, how are they supposed to do their jobs? And if you are s topped and you

have all your documents I'm sure they will apologise for the mild inconvenience.

They are based on race. My friend who is also black was s topped in Euston and was taken away to be questioned. She

was born in England as were her parents. She's never even visi ted a "black" country, she is English and she is from

England. They questioned her for THREE HOURS. This is race based, they are not stopping White Polish or White

She's taking this whole race thing too far now. If statistics s how that a proportionately higher number of certain ethnicities

are involved in certain crimes then of course they are going to be targeted. Does she want the authorities to turn a blind

Profiling is used all the time, not necess arily racial profiling. The way you walk, the way you talk, what you wear, what you

drive, we all make ass ess ment and decision based on what we see. And if you look at statistics, no matter what country,you will find certain people are over represented in m any social issues . I like the thought 'better be safe than sorry' - as

long as any search, questions etc are conducted in a decent and civilized manner by those in authority, I really am not in

the least worried and would not object if I were targeted. If we are hindered by people who oppose asking the obvious

then there will be all sorts of repercuss ions and increased numbers of illegal imm igrants who fraudulently gain access

to the Britain and indeed Europe. Crusaders should really look at the BIGGER picture, and unless people are prepared

to slowly descend into a 3rd world country, Europe needs to be more selective in the people who come and ensure

immigration is legal!

reported, then what they did WAS racially motivated. If only white people were being s topped coming out of a train stationwhils t black and brown people were allowed through - would you like it and see the whole thing as equitable and fair?

Illegal immigrants are not just brown people - they are white South Africans, New Zealanders, Canadians, Russians and

I'm sorry Doreen but most of the UK is a white population, and mos t immigrants aren't white so they are obviously going

to stop people who don't seem like they are from the UK. It has nothing to do with racial dis crimination what so ever.
