Page 2: Touching lives & Building future ... · hope and a future”” With God”s love, through faith and empowerment every child can get a new life and future. Who are the Roma people?

There are two ways to help those in need: we can give them bred and fish

or teach them to fish.

One of the biggest challenges when facing dramatic poverty is to work with both ways. With bred and fish people live for the day and of course become dependent on the daily help but helping them develop their skills and empower them to use it gives them back dignity.

We spend 2 amazing weeks in Albesti village this past summer. Our desire was to give children a glimpse of normal childhood, offering them some food, possibility to enjoy games, laugh, be loved and cared for, develop their skills and creativity. With many loving hands ready to hug and play with them, the kids flourished. These children usually are left behind at home alone or with some older sibilants.

You might ask yourself where are their parents ? Most of them struggle every-day to find something to do for the daily bread. They use horses to carry stuff for few lei income, collect metal or do some season job on somebody else’s land.

From 66 families living on the same valley, 6 are Romanians and 60 are Roma. Out of all Roma just one family is employed with the town cleaning company. All the others are living with the daily hope to find some work and income beside their small social help and child allowance.

Schooling is an absent thought when people are struggling to survive. With such a chaotic life and background is hard to accommodate to a school set-

ting. No one of the children is visiting a preschool. Through our activities, the teaching and the workshops we tried to help the children grow in the person they should be in order to be able one day to attend school without dropping of the next week.

With the ener-getic hands of the kids and the help of our committed volunteers from Sweden Belgium, Switzerland and not on the last place the Romanians, we decorated real flower pots, painted small pictures, made many hand crafts and made 3 school boards in the village. One day we gathered in the Cultural House and watched how every-one grew since 4 years we visit the vil-lage with the teams. The children as well the parents came with their best cloth. We celebrated with watermelon

and listen to Florins beautiful voice. Even the major of Albesti was im-pressed with the nice and well be-haved children.

Second week we distributed 5 ce-ment sacs for each family to repair their houses.

Visiting the village one week later, we saw a lot of activity in the valley. People were laying cement on their clay floor, plastering the walls or even building new rooms.

What a different atmosphere around; life, hard working people, joy and a good spirit of hope.

One month later I came back to visit Albesti and I saw few colored houses brightly seen from the distance and some proud children showing around. New fences builds up along the little houses and more care for the little yard is seen around. The flower pots were sitting joyfully by some windows and the small art work was greet-ing us from the school boards.

There is hope in empowering!

The highlight summer time for the Afterschool kids as well Danes and Goldberich kids programs was coming with a big challenge; choose good instead of evil even to those who are not so kind with you. Follow the example of King David who chose to do good even to his enemy. Through competitions, workshops, games and sports, occasions came to learn by doing. One afternoon a tear face Raul came to me to ask for help. He was hit by Alin and didn't want to hit back. He wanted peace but his opponent wanted fight, and to show off. We had a chance to talk, calm down and learn to choose right without violence, ask forgiveness and be at peace. What a beautiful heart we see in children, they forgive and forget so quickly. Something I can even learn myself. Big thank you to everyone who contributed for this great camp with the kids.

Kindergarten! A fresh new year of kindergarten has begun, and with a new school year means new chil-dren have signed up as well as new chal-lenges has arrived! We have 8 kids signed up, but one of the challenges is hav-ing the parents see the importance of bringing their kids each day and not just whenever it pleases them. To create a disciple lifestyle as well a structure in the children’s life coming from Roma background is one of the every-day values we try to implement in the kindergarten age.

The first weeks we got to know the new com-ers as well learn how to introduce oneself and later we learned about fall, the fruits and vegetables that grow and are harvested in this season, as well as what happens to the earth during this time.

Kindergarten has been full of crafts, coloring and painting as well re-

decorating and making a little nicer to be in. Despite the challenges that are faced, it’s always a pleasure getting to know and work with these precious children, knowing that our influence will last with them a lifetime.

Some of the new kids are under 3 years old. The advantage is to be able to influence their lives from early age with love, accep-tance and good foundational values. In the same time their focus attention is really small and their need for care and supervi-sion is greater.

Please pray for extra staff who can come in and help during mornings in this program which is so valuable for the children's foun-dational education. Thank you for your con-tinue support and prayers for these precious children.

Afterschool! For this year we will have the afterschool program for the kids in grades 1-8. That means the challenges we have to face are even greater than in the last years. For instance, those from the 8th grade will have to pass a very important examination –

mathematics and romanian language – in order to get in high-school. Those who aim for good high-schools pass these exams with the best possible results. That`s why we work hard and we encourage them to be disciplined and to make efforts during this season, so they can get in good schools in the next year. With a few exceptions, most of the kids started to gain trust in themselves for making homeworks. We still have some kids in need for more personal assistance from a tutor. They are in lower grades in school now or newcommers, but we hope they will grow in confidence and knowledge in the future and they will manage better also in school. The total number of the kids is 39, with 35 of them coming regularly. We have nine kids coming from distant neighbourhoods of the city. It is quite impresive to see some of them being at the program every single day. All the kids receive a warm meal here and a sweet bonus, at the end, when they succeed in making the homeworks. Most of the kids come also at the Sunday School programs or at the Step Step events.

Another year of our Bible study with the 6th to 8th grades has begun and has had a good beginning! With new kids coming into the 6th grade, new kids have started the group, so it’s been good getting to work with and invest in these new young people. Although we’ve known them through our other programs, it’s like getting to know them all over again in this new setting of Bible study. We have seen a real decline in behavior and decision making in some of the kids, so with the reality of these kids growing up in an environ-ment where alcohol, smoking, money and sex appeal is acceptable and desired, we’re really trying to stay focused in these group times to really

reveal Jesus to these kids, and the possibility to have a genuine relationship with Him. With lessons such as, ‘Having a Heart to Love God’ and ‘What Following Jesus Looks Like’, the focus has been to teach them that Jesus desires for a personal relationship with them, but with that comes a call to not live like everyone else but to be set apart and live a clean life for Jesus. Some of the young people have many questions about what this life looks like and how it’s lived… and some are so determined to be accepted by others and to appear “cool” to their peers that they’ve hardened themselves. But as we all know, Jesus can heal any hurting heart and soften even the hardest of hearts. Please continue in prayer and support for these kids- it’s in this age that they will make some decisions that will direct their future and shape them into the kind of adults they will become.

Please pray for a good recovery and for us to be able to restart the programs after the Christ-mas break. With the limited hygiene and poor nutrition we have had struggles with kids attendance be-cause of health issues. Please pray for the kids health. Keep us as well in your prayers to finish strong this semester and may us be able to see these kids be changed by the power of Jesus in their situations.
