Property Address: 24795 385th Avenue, Plankington, SD 57368 from any help. With night-vision goggles, I have seen the Milky Way few people will ever experience, dazzling with innumerable stars in the green glow, and watched thunderstorms tower above me, their lightening visible for hundreds of miles. In this weather, I have seen Saint Elmo’s fire, a luminous plasma that builds up on the canopy, looking like white fire enveloping you as you are inches away. I have seen the beauty of our own country, flying only hundreds of feet above the deep blue glaciers covering the Alaskan Rockies, or the dry, desolate expanse of the Mojave Desert. These descriptions are undoubtedly romanticized to paint a picture of absolute beauty. However, this perspective is often only perceived once back on terra firma. During the execution, there is little time to reflect, as events are happening at 10-20 miles per minute, with actions as violent and intense as humanly possible, even in a training environment. In that aspect, I was lucky and progressed quickly from wingman to flight lead to instructor, and now enjoy the responsibility of teaching this profession. While I was lucky for the opportunity, I had never worked so hard for something in my life. To become a flight lead, you have to prove your ability to lead in combat, from 1v1 combat to leading a 4-Ship in a complex and dynamic scenario. To become an instructor, you are proving your ability to do all those things to a higher level of execution, but also understanding the reasoning. When my evaluator shook my hand after flying my final Instructor Pilot Upgrade Syllabus event saying, “Jackal, congratulations on being the CAF’s newest IP”, my legs about gave out. When coaches talk about “leaving it all on the field”, I knew I could not have possibly worked harder. That moment will live with me forever as one of personal triumph. While these upgrades were stressful, they were not without their own moments to appreciate the awesomeness of my job. I have shot the gun now, almost countless times, delivering 20mm projectiles at 100 rounds a second. I have shot missiles and dropped bombs on ranges from Guam to Alaska to Nevada. I have flown over the equator, upside down, supersonic. I have participated in several multinational exercises, leading some of them, and had the privilege of fighting 1v1 against other services and countries. It for sure was an incredible assignment. Moments of pure joy. My wife, Daniela and I, were officially married before leaving for Japan, but celebrated the church wedding in her home country of Colombia one year later. I couldn’t have gotten any luckier finding a wonderful person who supports me in everything I do, regardless of the hours and commitment it takes. She is truly an incredible woman.
