The kids are full of praise for veteran ani-mal trainer LOU REGAN who gave them whatamounts to a "full semester of animal training" in aweekend. Remarks Janice: "Lou is very blunt, notnot vague or over-complimentary - smart as hell aboutanimals and what we learned from him justified theentire trip," The Arias commented also that IAN andMICKEY GARDEN are one of the most "gorgeouscouples" in show business, "enuff to make us allpine for salt and pepper hair!" The Arias will makethe second unit tour of 6 weeks for Ian, arrangedwhen Bauer-Hall released them from a previous com-mitment, and will play the Wallenda dates later thissummer which were set by Bauer-Hall.

Just finished reading the book by Hans Brick TheNature of the Beast' which was a gift from Tex Drey-fus. It is well worth reading and helps to increase myadmiration of animal trainers. Hans states there areonly two kinds of tigers "dangerous and very danger-ous". The book covers training of bears, cats, hoofanimals and many other species, After reading it youwill gain some new insight and respect for those whoenter the big cage.

It has been noticed by this writer that most Britishclowns are of the Auguste type, rather than whiteface, though some use the tramp make-up and somethe Charlie Chaplin style. Some use almost no makeup at all. The clown of the Moscow Circus does notuse makeup.

DEEP WATER: RAY HARTZELL scuba dives inthe moat half-mooning the stage at Busch Gardens(Williamsburg, Va.) for relaxation and thereby hangsa waterlogged tale. Seems scuba diving yields a bonus- coins tossed in the moat by spectators. One day lastsummer as Ray bobbed up from the depths, lucre inhand, the Entertainment Director wandered by andinformed Ray that money belonged to the park.Floating in righteous indignation, Ray fixed the dir-ector with a shark-eye and rebutted coldly: "Thenlet the park go down twelve feet to get it!"

BLACK MARK: A certain Shrine Temple and itsmembers (and members' friends) set a very poor ex-ample recently when they crowded the backstagearea, at every performance, with glasses of booze andbottles of beer in hand. These imbibers also jammedthe only entrance and exit to the arena creating ha-zards for performers, animals and prop crew. If theserollickers MUST turn their annual Shrine Circus intoa neighborhood bar, it seems their carousing couldbe done in a room far removed from the public eye.Only drunks can tolerate other drunks, Shriners ornot! SEE you down the road, luvs.

In your April 2nd issue, the "In Memoriam" itemabout Will Masten had one error, the statement thathe formed the Will Masten Trio in 1936. It wasmuch earlier. The week of Aug. 3, 1929,1 was one of the "Rix-fords", a hand balance and tumbling act and we wereworking in Detroit, Mich,, at the Oriole Terrace sup-per club and the Will Masten Trio were on the samebill. Their act was Will Masten, Sam Davis and SammyDavis, Jr. At the time little Sammy was announced asbeing 4 years old, but he was such a terrific perform-er we all thought he might be a 30 year old midget. Also on the bill was Johnny Sanna who did a comedyact finishing with an aero dancing routine in a mon-key suit and makeup.

So the formation of the Will Masten Trio must havebeen more like 1928 instead of 1936. Sammy, Jr. isnow 54 years old.

division overstepped its legal authority by attemptingto regulate a contract between two private parties. Atthe heart of the association's suit is the contentionthat neither it nor the promotional organization hasever represented itself as a "Charitable Trust" or a"Charitable Organization" as defined by the statutes. The Attorney General's Office disagrees.

For many years the local Police and Fire associationshave used an out-of-state promoter and circus to raisefunds for a variety of purposes. Last December theAttorney General's office filed a suit to freeze fundsbeing raised fora Christmas Variety Show in Dayton. The Attorney General charged a major portion of thefunds being raised would go to pay expenses and onlya small percentage would go to the intended charitableprogram.

The language of the contract specifies that they willnot represent themselves as charities, says LawrencePratt, assistant attorney general. "However," he addedthe "facts on their face indicate otherwise." He citedthe solicitations used at previous times by the promo-ter. "When you ask someone to buy a ticket for some-thing like this and tell them that if they don't intendto use it a needy child will, if that's not charitable in- -tent, I don't know what is." Pratt says his office hassimilar cases against the same promoter perilling inColumbus and Toledo.

A representative from the Police Association says hisorganization has always gotten a fair share of the pro-ceeds from the circus promotion. "The show has al-ways been decent and well-run. We've been happywith what we've gotten from the shows. They've pro-vided good, clean family entertainment for this area."He said the association got $12,000 from last year'scircus promotion, but he didn't know what the totalamount was that had been taken in, nor does he knowhow many tickets were sold.
