The Slovak Paradise The Slovak Paradise is so named because it is a region of stunning beauty with an endless choice of walks in spectacular scenery and delightful historic towns and villages.

Places to visit

Čingov Cingov is situated in the wide valley of the Hornad River and is one of the most important centres for Tourism in the Slovak paradise. Archeologically well know due to the discovery of artifacts dating from the late Stone Age.

Dedinky The village is situated in the Hnilec valley, right at the

water reservoir Palcmanská Maša. It arose in 1933 by

the unification of the villages of Imrichovce and of

Štefánovce. From Dedinky you can go through the

Zejmarská roklina (Zejmarská Gorge) and further to

Geravy and then through Sokolia dolina (Falcon

Valley) or Kyseľ to Kláštorisko, or through the Biely

Potok (White Creek) Valley to Čingov

Page 2: tour handbook (pdf)

Geravy The Geravyplateau is best accessed by the chairlift. This high-altitude plateau with

grasslands, interspersed with low forest is in winter ideal for cross country skiing. Mount

Gačovská Skala (1099 m) lies in the south of the plateau and offers beautiful views of the

Palcmanská Masa dam.

Caves Belianska Jaskyňa Belianska cave is situated in the eastern part of the Belianske Tatry Mountains, on the northern slope of the Kobylí Vrch. The cave offers visitors innumerable underground works of art by Mother Nature. There are the big "halls" and "vaults", pagodas and lakes and sinter lakes. There is even an area with good acoustics called the "Music", where recording concerts take place every August. In the cave are eight species of bats. www.ssj.sk/en www.ssj.sk/en

Havrania Skala

(Ravens Rock) From Geravy you can climb the steep mountain of Havraniarots (1156m) where from the top you get a wonderful view of the Slovak part of the Carpathian Mountains, the Slovak Paradise, and in the distance the Tatra mountain range.

Kláštorisko Is a vast clearing in the centre of the Slovak Paradise, which focuses on support of tourism in this area (it is the only tourist resort in the Slovak Paradise). In the past there was a religious settlement, there was also a small castle referred to in documents as castrum Lethon ("castle letański"). During the invasion of Tartars in 1241 this was the refuge of the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, so the area was later called Lapis Refugia ("Rock of refuge"). Later, the castle was taken over by Carthusians, who built a monastery there (c. 1307). In the fifteenth century the monastery was destroyed by the Hussites, In 1922. Branch Karpathenvereinu from Spišská Nová Ves built the first, rather primitive shelter for Klasztorzysku, which was then called the shelter Béla Hajtsa. In a short time Klasztorzysko became a major centre of tourism in the Slovak Paradise. With the participation of delegations of tourists from all over Czechoslovakia, and many residents of neighbouring villages a foundation stone was placed in Klasztorzyskufor a new mountain chalet KCS and was completed at the end of 1929. Destroyed by the Nazis in 1944 and rebuilt after the war. Today as well as a duty office for lifeguards it is the base of the Slovakian mountain rescue service.

Mlynky Several small mining villages and hamlets are scattered here in beautiful natural surroundings, now almost all holidays homes and tourist accommodation. Further on, where the valley narrows between Velka Knola and Babina, is the village of Mlynky (745 m), with 600 inhabitants is in winter is a popular ski resort with slopes for downhill and with extensive opportunities for cross-country skiing.

Obcasný Pramen Geological structure consisting mainly of Mesozoic carbonate rocks of Triassic to lower Jurassic. Among the best known and most important hydrological places to see occasional springs in Slovakia. The first reports about this spring date back to 1861. The source is most intense between March and May when it producers up to 35 litres of water per second and occasionally as much as 45 litres The springs are conditioned by the inflow of water into the underground space, not bound to a particular time of day. The water temperature is between 5.2 - 6.4 °C .

Podlesok Podlesok is a popular location and an ideal starting point for trips to the canyons in the western part of the Slovak Paradise as well as to the upper part of Prielom Hornádukloof

Page 5: tour handbook (pdf)

Spišská Nová Ves Already in the 13th century, this village played an important role in the region, with its mines and a weekly market it became the economical hub for the region. In the 18th century the region was annexed by Hungary, Spisska Nova Ves became the administrative center for the newly formed province of Spis. The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption with its slender neo-Gothic tower (87 m high) and the highest tower in Slovakia) , is the most valuable historical monument of the city. The Protestant church in classical style is also well worth a visit as is the town hall, the provincial house that was built in the 15th century and was originally the Town Hall, and the Reduta , an Art Nouveau building with a robust entrance gate to the north

Zejmarská roklina

(gorges) Above the village Biele Vody is the only gorge in the southern part of the Slovak Paradise, named Zejmarská roklina. It was formed by the water that flowed from the strong spring source Zejmarská Studna. This gorges is part of the Slovak Paradise south route that crosses the Geravyplateau and returns via the opposite valley Malé Zajfy to Dedinky .

Spiš Castle is a National Cultural Monument and the largest castle in the Central Europe. The first written document about the castle is from 1209. The

oldest part of the castle is the central tower. After the head of church of Spiš settled down at the castle, palatial Romanesque palace, donjon, Romanesque

gate and Romanesque chapel were built. In the 14th century the castle was modified and rebuilt in Gothic style. The middle courtyard was built at that time.

In 1442, Ján Jiskra got the castle and intensive reconstruction started. In 16th century the castle became the ownership of Thurzo Family. In the 17th century it belonged to Csáky stock. At the end of the 17th century only a small garrison

remained at the castle. The Csáky family built a noble residence in the near vicinity of the castle. The history of the castle ended in a great fire in 1780. In

last few years some intensive reconstruction works have been made on the castle.

sights such as the Wavelburcht, residence of the princes, and the Jewish Quarter show

Hiking in the High Tatras

Those who prefer higher mountains can go hiking to the High Tatras. All hiking trails are

marked by red, blue, green or yellow signs. (Movement in and around settlements and on

public roads is free of restrictions.)

TANAP's marked trails, ranging over nearly 600 km, lead to most significant points. The

trails are of 3 types:

• short walks

These are differentiated by terrain, requiring various degrees of ability and appropriate

equipment.

Every hiker dreams of one day walking to mountain summits. In the Tatras, this dream is

well within reach of anyone able to hike for a day. This is thanks to reliable marked

footpaths. For reaching some of the destinations it is possible to use chair lift or Cables.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION AND ITS UPKEEP

THE ACCOMMODATION

What can you expect?

JEKA accommodation centres in the Slovak Republic are situated in the Slovak Paradise,

in the region of Spišská Nová Ves. We have rented a number of centres and equipped

them specially, for our groups. They are cottages, country houses or youth hostels.

Each accommodation centre has a number of dormitories equipped with bunk beds,

sufficient modern sanitary facilities, a furnished kitchen and a dining/recreation room. The

kitchen is equipped with all cooking utensils necessary for preparing JEKA’s carefully

composed menu. So, you don’t need to bring any kitchenware or cooking utensils.

However, electrical appliances are not supplied so if you want to use a mixer or a coffee

machine, you will have to bring it with you.

In your JEKA-accommodation centre you will find a cleaning kit to keep your house neat

and tidy including washing-up liquid. JEKA also supplies toilet paper. You can apply for

additional supplies of these products at any time from our representative.

Kitchen towels and dishcloths have to be brought from home.

Our accommodation is comfortable but furnished simply so the team spirit is really

important. That’s also the reason why there is no television, radio, or telephone, however

you can always be reached in case of emergency via our local JEKA office and there is a

public telephone box in your neighbourhood.

JEKA must stress the utmost importance that departing groups leave their accommodation

centre in a good clean condition. Every coming group has the right to arrive in a clean and

tidy accommodation centre.

Page 29: tour handbook (pdf)

What we expect from you BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE:

- clean the floors,

- clean all furniture, especially all tables and chairs,

- check all beds for damage you can possibly repair yourself.

Make sure that all mattresses and pillows have a JEKA-cover,

- The evening before your departure switch both the refrigerator and the

freezer on “defrost”, clean them after they have been defrosted and switch

them on again (before applying this procedure first ask our JEKA-

representative what to do with possible leftovers),

- clean the gasfires thoroughly, without forgetting the steel frame and base

structure,

- do not leave leftover food in places not reserved to store them,

- wash all cooking- and kitchenware thoroughly,

- clean all toilets, washbasins and showers thoroughly,

- Tidy the area surrounding your centre by collecting all rubbish in bags

which you tightly tie together and leave at the agreed spot.

It is strictly prohibited to take mattresses, JEKA-blankets, -pillows or -furniture

out of the dormitories or use them outdoors.

Groups staying in two different centres, who need to take kitchenware from one house to

the other one, are kindly reminded to return these to their original location.

Any damage to furniture or kitchenware must to be reported to our representatives before

your departure. The claim will be settled by mutual agreement.

It’s the responsibility of every group leader to ensure that the above conditions

are observed.

Any costs resulting from repair- and/or cleaning-activities as a result of not

following the above conditions will be claimed back directly or after your stay!

THE TOURIST TAX

Tourist tax is a community tax which is payable by tourists.

You MUST pay this tourist tax in the Slovak Republic per day/per person. The amount

Page 30: tour handbook (pdf)

FIRE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Even though the necessary safety precautions are undertaken, our accommodation still

contains some combustible materials.

Therefore we urge you to be very careful in the kitchen, not to smoke in the dormitories

nor in the neighbourhood of gas bottles.

Check how to use the fire extinguishers and, in case of emergency, practise a fire drill,

noting the nearest exits.
